A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Placemats, just leave it. You will get yourself in trouble. Come back to the other thread.

I think the festive food talk is ok. But stay or go if people can get on and share Christmas cheer why not.

Omg. That is the perfect analogy. Great film.

Underrated, I think.

I have a very 1980s christmas. Love coloured lights, although desperate to find the old fashioned ones, not LED. Think they were Pifco brand?
I like lametta, although we called it angel hair. Still have all the kuds homemade decorations. I go on a hunt for missletoe and have to take my husband as can never reach it.
Christmas food is ace. I like homemade mince pies, proper Christmas cake with royal icing. My husband loves stollen, but I'm not so keen. Weirdly, I love marzipan in between royal icing and fruit cake but otherwise, not so much.
Matchmakers are essential as is ginger bread. My kuds still make ginger bread on christmas eve. It's a kind of tradition.
Eyeing up the baileys, although if it's in the house, I'll stsrt putting it in my morning coffee so best to hold off for now!

Your wish is my command re lights

Yep, this 💯
All of it 😁.

Those old style coloured lights are beautiful. The modern ones are too bright for me. I have warm white at the moment, on a very traditionally decorated tree. Love all the things made by the kids when they were small.
I'm a bit late this year, but will be making our Xmas cake this weekend. I didn't get time to make our annual parkin this year 😫. I'll miss that on bonfire night.

Ooh really. Where can I find them. Desperate to get them. My dh gets paranoid and thinks they'll start a house fire. I'm sure they never did in the 80s

RoyalImpatience · 04/11/2025 20:50

Eastern , a sweet invitation but I feel we are seen like the old Vic in Albert square to some who are holding thier noses from fortnums tea rooms to cross the divide.

No issues with sharing Christmas cheer. I highly recommend the Christmas Chronicles for getting in the festive mood.

I am off now, though. 🎅

I thought my prunes lowered the tone quite drastically.

Yes, they have soft muted colours. I'm tempted by those. Love the casings too. A bit worried about splurging in John Lewis in case we can't pay the bills after budget. It may be a case of seeing what we can scrape from under Tiny Tim's toenail

Nolletimiere · 04/11/2025 20:52

For a moment it was akin to playing Xmas footie with the Hun in no man’s land…

Right, back to our Rachel.

The prune comment didn't lower the tone in my view however the response " at least you won't get bunged up with all that game"....well...

Haha no way, it made me laugh though. I feel like people come in and yell at us sporadically, but if they mellow and eat a mince pie I can forget about that in the spirit of Christmas etc

Anyone interested in retro Christmas lights should give Etsy a visit. Endless choices, I'm thinking of ordering these:

Apologies for the delay in the photo appearing, sensitive images of 80s Christmas lights.

Well that appeared more quickly than expected!

Catatemyhomework · 04/11/2025 20:57

These lights are all amazing. Lovely memories of my childhood. I'm going on a light search. Thanks for the inspiration.

Catatemyhomework · 04/11/2025 20:59

The problem is you need enough to go round a whole tree. Sometimes, these vintage lights aren't enough and then you need two sets. Then you have issues with sockets and Christmas tree placement.
