A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Ooh, Gremlins in the machinery. I like it. It's almost festive... More festive than the John Lewis Christmas advert this year.

Did you get your Christmas delivery slot this morning?

Ha ha. Visions of Gizmo 😁

Yes I got my slot. 💪 Did you?
I was up at 5am anyway, so no bother, but I didn't log on until 7am and there was no queue. Weird.

I've booked the 22nd so I've got time to go shopping for anything missing. We had 17 missing items last year. 😂

It may be erased by next week after today's shit show.

Yes. I forgot until after breakfast and thought I'd be doomed to a crap slot but managed to get a click and collect for the 23rd🎄🎄 Although I have held it with a bag of satsumas and a bottle of prosecco so I must not forget about it this year!

justasking111 · 04/11/2025 18:37

I've never done online shopping. Thought about it because of my hips but DH likes shopping for bits so I haven't bothered. I suspect he thinks I'd spend too much 😁

Is it weird or some kind of money saving exercise this year?

It's pretty weird in comparison with other years. I was stuck in a queue for hours and hours one year. I just assumed they'd upped their tech game this time around when I was through in minutes rather than budgeting constraints. Our local Tesco is absolutely heaving all the time now, so I don't think it can be that.

MN has historically had a large number of left leaning posters. I can remember when to be openly Tory on here would be to invite the MN equivalent of Amish shunning: run the witch out of town!

It’s a bit different now because the site’s bigger and more diverse. It’s less dominated by ‘right thinking’ posers posting from their west London Smallbone kitchens or low grade uni staff sounding off. That hasn’t helped the standards of grammar but it does mean that the local Labour Party shouters and pamphleteers are more drowned out.

The Labour threads are in that way the last ravings of the retired Bennites and angry self-important campaigners who never grew up. Pity them.

There have been some amusing posts today. One upside from the Labour decline.

SpaceRaccoon · 04/11/2025 18:57

@Catatemyhomework I'm so sorry. The uncertainty alone is dreadful.

I got my slot last week, Using Sainsburys this year. 23rd for me, so I've still got a couple of days if things are missing. I've been buying goodies for the last few weeks though, so It's just the fresh stuff.

It looks as though the speech intent might have been to try and reduce the interest costs on the debt - that’s the desperate state of the game isn’t it - squeeze a few quid back…

The best place for the fresh stuff around here I accidentally discovered years ago and have used ever since is our local co-op. It's bliss. I get all the salads, main course side, the store is blissfully civilised and quiet. Meanwhile in town it's a rugby scrum in the supermarkets. Car parks gridlocked, utter chaos.

I normally start buying stuff this month, hide it in the wardrobe in the front bedroom, so I only need to get fresh bits Xmas week.

DH came home last week with a big box of Quality Street, bless him.

I think so, too.

Reeves’s focus in on yields - which is not immediately compatible with a favourable fiscal outcome for many of us.

Yes I've started a Christmas cupboard too. I've put packets of oats and nuts in front of the goodies to hide them. If dh sees Xmas food, its gone. I have to change cupboards every year to maintain stealth.

@justasking111 It saves me money when I shop online, rather than going in person. I top-up at Lidl as its closest. I get too tempted by things I don't need if I go in. Dh is never here, so its all on me.
Sounds like your dh enjoys it though, so let him crack on 😁.

The BBC’s Arabic news service chose to “minimise Israeli suffering” in the war in Gaza so it could “paint Israel as the aggressor”, according to an internal report by a whistleblower.
Allegations made against Israel were “raced to air” without adequate checks, the memo says, suggesting either carelessness or “a desire always to believe the worst about Israel”.
BBC Arabic, which is funded partly by a grant from the Foreign Office, gave large amounts of space to statements from Hamas, making its editorial slant “considerably different” to the main BBC website even though it is supposed to reflect the same values, managers were warned.

The BBC also gave “unjustifiable weight” to Hamas claims about the death toll in Gaza, which are widely accepted to have been exaggerated for propaganda purposes, and incorrectly claimed the International Court of Justice had ruled that genocide was taking place.
Danny Cohen, the former director of BBC Television, said it was now clear that the BBC was “not safe” in the hands of its senior managers and they should “hang their heads in shame and resign”.

Yes, there was also this, that is a quote from the main article in the Telegraph:

One man who said Jews should be burned “as Hitler did” appeared as a guest on BBC Arabic 244 times in 18 months.
Another man who described Israelis as less than human and Jews as “devils” appeared 522 times in the same period.

Yet another day when I feel relief and happiness that I no longer paying for a TV licence.

Will that give her some wiggle room for this budget do you think?
I think the budget is signed off two weeks prior, so theres still time?
Excuse my ignorance if I'm being thick.

I put the celebrations in the loft one year to keep them safe after getting a bargain early in the season. It wasn't enough. It's better just to pay the premium closer to Christmas in this house than replace them again and again.

redange · 04/11/2025 19:33

Yes i am probably one of those who has lowered the standards of grammar ! This despite actually having a Politics Degree.

The Labour posts do make me giggle, especially the ones suggesting Brexit, Tories, Farage and Harold Macmillan are responsible for the larges-see of the current administration. The effects of Brexit are of course debatable whether or not opportunities have been utilized or deliberately constrained. However, the one thing I am sure of is that despite the posters who declare Brexit being the main reason for our current woes, clearly do not consider that Europe is in as bigger hole as the United Kingdom. This unless the posters believe that solely the United Kingdom would have propped the entire EU up and ensured prosperity to all concerened.

Same. It’s really freeing to not support it anymore.
