The consensus seems, inevitably, to be that Reeves’s speech was a pointless exercise, and one that only doomed governments attempt: if you’re facing electoral calamity, the wonks tell you to get out early and blame everyone else. But it never works. People see through it straight away.
That speech has sealed her and Starmer’s fates.
The undeniable truth - which in periods of economic crisis, like now, comes home to voters of all outlooks - is that the private sector is the foundation of the economy. And Reeves has cut it off at the knees.
The problem Labour has is that there are no more Blairs or Darlings or even Jenkins within the party. There are no more fiscally sensible senior figures who ‘get’ business and the need for growth by and from business.
This will be a drawn-out, very painful three years ending with the destruction of Labour.
