Good morning! Before I shoot off to check the Dutch election, here's my cat tax.

Love your cats @pointythings. Are they practicing playing Tetris? 🤣

Still very close.

The far right vote has splintered but it's still very present

For me the issue with Rachel Reeves is that in her position she should just be a bloody sight more careful. I'm happy to accept this was a genuine oversight on her part - but ffs the Chancellor of all people really ought to be taking independent legal advice on anything they do involving personal finance to avoid these kind of fuckups.
My prediction - she stays in role, delivers the budget, then goes and gets the blame for it.

countrygirl99 · 30/10/2025 08:58

My personal maxim is if you wouldn't want to see it in the papers don't do it or double check you are following the rules as appropriate. And I've never even held a public post.

Ghostsghoulsteenagers · 30/10/2025 09:01

Rachel Reeves has made so many errors of judgment- surely by now she should just go . The rest of us mere mortals check stuff like this on Google - why didn’t she . She is just careless not a good look for a chancellor .

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2025 09:02

But that is why she paid and trusted the letting agency to do it.

But it’s a bit like when you use an accountant to do your tax return - HMRC make it very clear that any mistakes are your responsibility and not that of any agent you have used.

I think she was very foolish to assume it would all be taken care of, especially given Labour’s promise of honesty and integrity.

Yes, it might have been an inadvertent error, but she should have been aware of her position and how important things like this are to the Daily Mail et al.

But a 15 second Google would have told her she needed one.

Like most people I have used solicitors and accountants for certain things, but I always check things myself too. And have found mistakes!

Exactly.

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2025 09:12

Ah well, we will agree to disagree.

Non issue imo and certainly not something to get fired over.

Why would she Google something she didn’t know existed? And how? You don’t know what you don’t know, that’s why she employed experts. And it’s not even a national thing, it’s specific to particular locations.

Do they think we have forgotten that they were all in the Cabinet for the previous 'highest tax burden' Tory government?

You would search for something along the lines of rules for letting out your house and check in with the local authority. You don't need to know about the specific thing to do that.

Well I didn’t do it so I’m certainly not going to condemn anyone else. That’s what letting agents are for.

This.

It is such a stupid and completely avoidable mistake. It might be minor in the scheme of things, but it is technically a criminal offence.

SerendipityJane · 30/10/2025 09:25

Nadhim Zahawi

Didn't he say that he'd always paid his taxes in full whilst he was negotiating a £5 million settlement with HMRC. He didnt disclose the HMRC investigation and therefore was in breach of the Ministerial Code.
Something about £27 million in an offshore account under family member's names.
(I fully appreciate that Osborne Clarke were fined for their contributions to shenanigans)

DuncinToffee · 30/10/2025 09:45

Reeves mistake was to admit to it, why couldn't she just have said something a little bit racist.

The Times had a weird piece about Torsten Bell (that they had to retract), wonder if there was a reason for it. He has been mentioned as a possible replacement.

yes, I saw that. Claimed his Ikea desk was £900. Second article this week they've had to withdraw for being BS.
Similar to the Telegraph's made up story of the private school family cancelling their holiday that they had to withdraw.

Would appear so must be that collective amnesia bug that is still doing the rounds, same with Zahawi & his HMRC debacle, but RR really should have checked & double checked I know nothing about renting out property if I was the chancellor of the exchequer would make sure I bloody well found out, just more ammunition for a largely hostile media.
thank you for the thread Duncin & all contributors the tax photos are fabulous
flowers from me & especially for those grappling with grief & loss.

I agree with you Blossom. My sister let out her house and paid the estate agent for sorting everything out as she was living in another country at the time.
