A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I’d add in if you’re public sector or quasi public sector/charity and the money for your salary comes from the govt in one form or another.

Darren Jones. He’s being very obviously lined up to take on Chancellor. He’s writing this budget after all.

Yes. I think you’re correct.

At the risk of putting an uneducated dog into this fight...
I really like phonics. My ds1 who is only turned an adult arrived at school just as Gove was educational minister and mandated phonics as the priority method for literacy learning. So if poor reading skills are to be laid at the feet of producing hardened criminals, I don't expect that can be blamed on phonetics yet, can it?

I was taught by educational hippies in the 80s who thought we would simply imbibe the skill of reading, spelling and grammar through osmosis and whole word flashcards if they were feeling ambitious. The poor secondary school teachers were aghast with the starting point they were left with. Only those with motivated parents had a leg to stand on.

Edited

Yes! I was taught using “look and say” which was useless. I remember having a teacher get cross because I knew that “light” was light but I couldn’t translate that to “tight”.

So my mum taught me using Peter and Jane books and phonics in the summer between what is now year 2 and 3.

Kemi Badenoch insisted Rachel Reeves must quit if she raises income tax, National Insurance or VAT at the Budget.
She said: “Our message is simple. If she puts up tax, give Reeves the axe. That last Budget was a disaster and after that she said she wasn’t coming back for more.

“And what have we been hearing for summer? Rises in property taxes, increases in income taxes, they wanna tax our homes, they wanna tax our pensioners, they wanna tax our savings. Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. Enough is enough. If she puts up tax, give Reeves the axe.

“If you want more of something, you don’t tax it, it is a very simple principle. She put taxes on jobs, jobs disappeared. They taxed farmers, farmers are closing down. They taxed business, they are taking everything, they are taxing education, we are seeing schools closing down because they can’t afford Labour’s taxes.

“Someone needs to get a grip on it. So Keir Starmer, you need to make sure that your Chancellor gets a grip. If she cannot get a grip on controlling spending, you need to sack her. Enough is enough.”

I was just listening to Kemi's speech.
10/10 from me, she was excellent.

If the chancellor can't even get on top of her own paperwork, how's she going to get on top of the country's paperwork?

Ok I’m very busy today and tomorrow. I’m sure this thread will be filled by the time I’m back 😂😂. There’s just so much unimaginable Labour fckwittery 🫣

Those threads should come with a qualifier i.e. please disclose if the bulk of your ‘earnings’ is via welfare support?

Labour should do a targeted increase in taxes to posters who are so keen to pay more. Just them.

Right - it would be interesting to see how much is raised.

Some of them get really quite cross if you have the temerity to suggest that Reeves needs to address the welfare budget.

Yes. As a public sector worker, many think it’s the magic money tree funding it. Many staunch Labour supporters are public sector or ex. They are true workers don’t ya know.

All recepients of the state largesse. The entitlement is something to behold. Want Scandi taxes and not willing to have the welfare system and contributory system to go with it. The country is in decline and it will be a whole lot worse if we don’t get a grip on welfare.

That’s the issue state dependency is so high of course people demand higher taxes and no cuts.

It’s the slowness of it that’s painful, I’m with you it’s unsustainable.

Yes it’s just the sheer entitlement and the expectation (or really the demand) that once you’re in receipt of whatever benefit it should continue indefinitely. Welfare is supposed to tide you over but people have adopted it as a lifestyle.

Reeves' supporters are saying it seems like a genuine error

People do make mistakes, forget to do stuff etc and it’s easy enough with all the red tape which seems to accompany admin these days. BUT, an MP has access to secretaries, lawyers, accountants and proper advice about just about everything.
Also, MPs must know they are watched like hawks for any misdemeanour so they have to be extra careful.
She doesn’t have an excuse.

But Reeves campaigned for this licensing scheme. I mean, surely that jogs the memory?

Itcantbetrue · 30/10/2025 10:43

Great speech by kemi !!

Re phonics its a discussion for elsewhere but it's obvious that whilst phonics works for some DC it of course won't work for all.

DC with literacy issues /dyslexia are often phonics blind which by pushing a reading scheme they can't work with ; locks them out of education .
You see a downwards spiral quite fast when they can't read what's on the board and basic things

Phonics has had a strangle hold on our education system almost like a cult and yet our literacy levels are still extremely poor with reports coming out about a secondary dip largely due to reading levels.

Thankfully more and more research is being done to prove that many DC with literacy issues are phonics blind so just pushing phonics won't work.

How long that will take to feed onto our stupid system though ,who knows .

How hard is it ,oh this DC isn't getting phonics will fail the test...let's try another way !
Often for these students looking at the mechanics of how words are built makes more sense eg sight reading , root words with pre fix and suffix additions. They need context and real sensible references .

As I said the unions are very much against educating teachers on any of this though.
Why I can't fathom out.
All the training workshops I've seen and CPD don't seem to include send.

However it's send education that as a society we desperately need to truly break cycles of poor education ,low self esteem , low paid work or no work ,crime and so on .

Which yes does feed into our prisons ! It's all out there.
