Labour isn't working - Thread 14

TheNuthatch · 21/10/2025 08:54

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Of course they don't, especially when they're in office.

There's a thread on Khan running on Feminism group saying the same thing.

I hope they are right. Bigot showed off her nasty side and Powell seemed surprised 🙄, like "why is she being mean to ME?"....

Yes I've seen it. Khan's obfuscation on this will come back to bite him one day. I look forward to that day, but he will make sure that he is no longer dependent on certain votes before that happens.

Same Khan’s goading was so bad over that question.

I soppose it would be too much to hope that the treaty allows for an 'out-ed'' migrant who re-enters the UK to be returned to France without having to accept another one in?

So many quiestions....

I don’t think the main problem is fiddling, the main. Issue is that we’ve let down a generation of young adults (and are adding to this) through education and employment opportunities that didn’t match what they could do. A lot of the young adults who are in a terrible state on disability benefits need to be back in work they can feel proud of, for their own sakes as well as society’s.

we’ve discussed this many times - there’s a problem that the system discourages work and doesn’t get people into it, as the terrible numbers for young people show.

Edited

The problem with that is that young people today aren't taught that any job is something to be proud of, even cleaning toilets.

They have been promised that they can be anything they want if they want it hard enough. A job that they really want to do was never the bargain with society. The bargain with society was you worked at any work that was available, in order to pay for your keep. If you were lucky enough to have time and money to spare, you fulfilled yourself through hobbies.

Only a minority of people have ever been able to chose to do work that truly fulfills them.

Agree @Imdunfer any work has to be better than no work at all..(barring an employer acting in an illegal way clearly).

No no no. Benefits are better. Why do a shit job 8 hrs a day 5 days a week, when one can get paid for doing fck all?

38thparallel · 22/10/2025 14:12

They have been promised that they can be anything they want if they want it hard enough.

I’ve never understood this. I enjoy playing the piano but I couldn’t be a concert pianist had I had the best teachers and practised for hours every day from the age of 3.
i am simply not musical enough.
So why promise young people this - it’s just setting them up for disappointment.

agree one dd loves art and singing - I’m not encouraging her to think she is very likely to be able to make a career out of this. we’ve got several
musically gifted people we know and it pays so badly now and there are so few and declining jobs in it they’d have been better keeping it as a hobby. We hope the world might change but you have to deal with the jobs that are out there.

It was the push back against a school system that wrote children off too young and often because of their background not their ability. Children began to be taught to push for their dreams because they would never achieve a dream they didn't push for.

Along the way, the message that it didn't matter how hard they pushed for their dreams the majority of them would not achieve them and a good percentage of those that did would find that after a while, a job is just something you have to go in and do every day even if you're a brain surgeon, has got lost.

"You can be whatever you want" has gone far too far, but it's still something I'm hearing repeated everywhere. It's a lie and not surprisingly many young people are mentally fucked by finding out they've been lied to about something so fundamental to their lives.

Thanks for the link.
I was quite taken aback by Starmer's continual reference to this in the past tense. Its still happening, probably in every town and city.

Sons partner in Leeds confirmed it's still happening. Girls vanishing off the street, from Uber cabs. My son is having to pick her up now because she's pretty and blonde. The universities are keeping schtum.

Rivalled · 22/10/2025 14:30

I agree again - Michelle Obama is good on this topic - that a lot of life is blah and boring and about holding on, even when you’re on track to achieve your goals and we don’t present that to kids enough.

nobody says much that it wouldn’t be work if they didn’t pay you anymore.
