A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Greens now have more members than conservatives

I find that quite worrying. props to their team for doing some excellent PR recently, but yeah, it worries me.

(hopefully this is a thread where we can discuss PR neutrally, whatever you think of them, I think the comms team have done well)

Triggernometry have done an open invitation, or challenge, for Zach to come on their show.

I think it is worrying to see the rise of the Greens with their avalanche of bats hit ideas but I think that we can talk neutrally about the methods of Comms and how parties are signalling their voters.

If it's of any consolation though, the Greens won't get many seats at this voting level because they are deeply popular in pockets but not widely popular, at least not yet. So I think they are on target for about 8/9 seats at this point.

Yes of course we can discuss PR neutrally.

There are obviously many voters on the left who are also fed up with Starmer and Co, but obviously for different reasons to the posters on this thread. I'm not sure how or why people on the left thought Starmer was their man tbh. ZP has definitely got the gift of the gab, and does media very well. He is a lefty snake oil salesman imo, and he's good at it. Jezza/Sultana have spent too much time arguing with each other and ZP has stolen the march.

Current polling for digital ID 👀

33% in favour - 55% oppose

(Pre announcement was 42% Vs 45% so support dropping)

Scotland (SNP and Reform are against ID)

28% in favour - 60% oppose

Sarkozy just gone to prison for 5 years!!! French mean business.

Blair et al be careful. Or maybe not. They’d get some kind of ‘honour’ here.

Ipsos had support at 57% in August. I wonder how they phrased the question:

If you could get rid of illegal immigrants and we gave you a bag of sweets, would you support i.d. cards?

Wales?

I think the top figure is for England and Wales. It wasn't clear when I was listening, not a deliberate ommission on my part. There is always a shortage of individual polling for Wales, always bugs me.

I heard it on a podcast, and they were highlighting that the SNP were going to make hay with digital ID in Scotland.

The jails here are so overcrowded that Blair would be out on good behaviour before he finished reading his first book.

True. Except surely it’d be ‘writing’ his first book 💰

I know, I feel the same. I was worried this would happen when the inquiry was announced.

There are reports that already, there are requests to expand the remit of the inquiry to include other cases of sexual abuse, which can only be for the purpose of diluting the uncomfortable truth.

Definitely about diluting anything which may harm 'community cohesion'.

Quite heartbreaking that those women who were failed so badly are being failed again. I don't blame them for protecting themselves - they've been through so much, and it's not their responsibility. But it's such a shame that they've given upnon it. A huge, enduring shame on the UK.

I remember the lead up to their leadership election and thinking if Polanski wins he’ll build more support.

The good part is it’ll take away Labour’s bid to get younger voters by lowering the voting age, so that’s a plus.

He is out there, but really anything left of Rachel Reeves’ tears is not viable due to the markets and borrowing costs. That pretty much rules out Burnham, most Labour MPs and Polanski. Any policies would last a day.

Overall I’m ok with the Greens changing tack because I think Labour will lose out most. Some sort of left coalition of course is another thing, but Polanski has ruled out working with Starmer already and if they got together left policies would tank the market.

I was at a board meeting last week of a charity that I am a trustee of.

We don’t do fundraising from the general public, it is mainly wealthy individuals who donate because they believe in our cause, and want to support the UK generally.

Many of them were not born in the UK, but chose to live here. Many of them own their own businesses. The message we are getting from them is that if RR’s budget is as anti-wealthy people as is rumoured, and if they continue to be demonised, then they will not stay in the UK, and will not support UK charities and causes when they leave, but will instead divert their charitable giving to causes in the country they settle in.

We are talking very very wealthy people here, who have the money and connections to move country if they want to. The sort of wealth where they give us a five/six figure sum every year without blinking, and give similar or larger sums to many other charities, because it’s not just us that they support. Year after year, they do this.

But, all that is at risk - not to mention the taxes that they pay, and the employment that they provide. And all because of jealousy and attacks on ambition from the left.

It makes me so cross when people say that “the rich” should pay more tax, donate more to charity - because they really don’t have a clue just how much “the rich” are already doing.

TheNuthatch · 21/10/2025 11:48

Latest (and only polling I can find) for the Caerphilly by-election this week. Caveat, the poll only consisted of 500 people so not necessarily accurate.

Apologies if this has been posted before and I've missed it. I can't keep up with this thread.

So true.
These people are a huge credit, not only to the treasury, but to society as a whole. Its utter madness to demonise them and chase them away.

And their comms is so woefully wrong. Most of us understand the public funding situation is dire, across a range of countries. It is the negative depressing rhetoric that is as much of the problem as the policies.

It’s always it’s this bad because the tax system isn’t fair. That’s substantially incorrect. Yes some taxes need reform potentially but income tax is progressive and fair and has been for a long time.

Rivalled · 21/10/2025 12:09

Honestly after that IFS Helen Miller TRiM pod we need someone else on there to make the case for taxes stifling growth, and the fact that we are really fully taxed…

credit to TRIM they have covered these issues best to my mind but they need a range of experts..

CaveMum · 21/10/2025 12:14

@Rivalled they have Dan Niedle on fairly regularly and whilst he would be considered on the Left by many he has been vocal about being anti-wealth tax, anti-stamp duty and pro Council Tax reform. This was his latest contribution from last month where they talked about politicians tax affairs.

I heard that too - it’s amazing that Labour didn’t listen to people ‘on their side’ last time either. Paul Johnson and Neidle didn’t think employer NI was a good idea.

we do have a government in a hurry to push in things and who are only interested in commentary they agree with even from ‘their’ side.
