A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes. My accountant has flagged it too.

They seem hell-bent in pushing everyone into PAYE (so they can deduct tax at source), remove cash from society, and introduce ID (not to manage immigration, but to control the taxpayer).

Were this the US, I suspect the consequences would prove tragic.

I’m confused!! I’m a woman!!! ???

So? Why are you confused? Lots of women feel entitled to police the conversations of other women.

And I’ve been reading if to years… as I do many threads. I don’t often comment for the very reason that it doesn’t feel like a place when you can have a different option any more… clearly a difference of option is not valid.

Of course everyone's opinion is valid.

As long as they can present the reasons behind it.

You keep insisting that the level of benefit fraud are miniscule. You keep insisting claimants are hard done by. I understand you have strong feelings about it. What you don't have is evidence.

I haven't made any judgements at all, I know nothing about you. It is you who is making assumptions.
Happy to chat politely.

I have chatted politely. I’ve offered my opinion and lived experience and professional experience. Like other people’s opinions that is valid. MN over the years has always been a good place to go for advice and reassurance. This thread is relevant because like many I’m frustrated with the lack of leadership, mistakes made and future they are handing my teenagers. I’d come on for support and viewpoints - to understand political choices in the future. For hope I guess! It’s hard to read generic assumptions and I am offering a lived experience. I don’t think I’m rude. But there you go messages can be interpreted differently.

A bit like a certain other thread then.

Yes, okay. I just feel narked I answered her question in good faith for it to be cynically misread. I'll stand down.

Edited

I’ve not said they are hard done by. I’m simply saying the benefits system as a whole doesn’t work - specifically referring to the amount of PIP applicants and re-applicants who have to go down the mandatory reconsideration route and are then awarded. That this is never talked about yet fraud rates always come up in conversations of this nature. Often assessments have been inaccurate, silly mistakes made. Assessors who have no idea about conditions. Maybe a physio assessing someone with a complex genetic disorder as an example…This causes years of stress and is detrimental to their health and wellbeing. I’m pointing out the system is letting them down. Yet many people don’t talk or know about this.

OK great. Chat away. Your first post did have a certain tone to it, but I accept that can be hard to judge in written form. We have a bit of a rule of not knifing each other, and no bun fights as it ruins threads.
I don't always like or agree with what I read on here so I just keep scrolling. We get a lot of drive-by posters trying to 'educate' us as you may have seen if you read this thread.

@littleredpiano this is a read the room moment.

Bottom line is that the benefits bill has massively increased, particularly around PIP. It seems unlikely that as a society we suddenly have massive amounts more disabled people. I'm not saying people claiming are all in bad faith or fraudulent, but clearly the eligibity has become far too wide and it's not affordable.

You also have the ridiculous situation where non-working people, due to various gateway benefits, actually have more disposible income than working people in a relatively high salary. If you've read the prior thread, you'll see that broken down in a bit more detail. That's a ridiculous situation.

Looking forward to PMQs. I'm WFH today as I've injured my foot running. I'll put the telly on.

I get that. I wasn’t trying to get into a bun fight. So apologies if my comments have been misinterpreted I genuinely don’t post much for this reason!! I just have experience in this area and was offering an alternative opinion. Thank for your understanding.

Thanks for highlighting that. I had missed her remarks with everything going on yesterday. I've just watched this:

Chris Philps on how to ask a question in Parliament in such a way it covers all the ground and sticks the knife in to boot. Makes Anderson look like a pussy cat.

I can’t read the room I’ll be honest! I absolutely agree with that regarding benefit bill increase. However I was specifically talking about PIP here and mandatory reconsiderations in terms of fraud rates etc. I’m not touching UC.

I work for a LLP so I guess I won’t be getting a pay rise in January. Changes to
NI won’t just impact the partners because they’ll need to find the extra money from somewhere and it will be ordinary employees that are in the firing line.

CaveMum · 22/10/2025 12:20

Starmer has full confidence in Jess Philips, she’s a gonner then!
