A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I’m not being self righteous but if insulting me makes you feel better then I’ll take one for the team… I’m voicing what I see vulnerable people in the UK are dealing with… you can take that or leave it. The narrative that people are swinging the system without substance is not helpful to these people.

In terms of ‘we look out for each other’ we still do have an issue with weighting and dependency. It’s too high. The figures in that pp show the problem.

Very articulate of you. For the record - You’ve misquoted me - I didn’t say ‘no-one commits fraud’, there will always be some. But the research and statistics are already there. Fraud accounts for a tiny percentage, overturned decisions such as PIP MD’s are common daily occurrences. That means people are losing out on what they should have been given. I was genuinely interested in your own experiences that have made you so steadfast in your opinions. My experience of working with those that are on benefits or applying, who are at their lowest in life, whose lives have changed in a split second, is very different to yours clearly.

Why are you assuming that no-one on this thread has experience with life limiting illness please? Or the benefits attached? You'd be wrong.
It's quite rude to come on this thread and accuse posters of lacking in human kindness when you know nothing of the personal circumstances of those you are addressing.
Nobody has suggested that those in genuine need should suffer, but I don't accept that the UK is becoming more disabled than pre-covid. Do you?
I would like to see a return to face-to-face appointments for PIP for a start, but I disagreed with the government's recent bill to cut welfare as it was based on date of application rather than the condition which would have created a two tier system. As things stand, we have a system where those on long term sickness benefits are better off than many who work. That needs to change if there is any hope of reducing the unsustainable welfare bill.

Welcome @apples24 I’m also feeling pretty politically homeless. I’d describe myself as centre-right so some of the rhetoric coming from elements of the Conservative Party at the moment makes me nervous.

Labour, Greens and Reform are just NO for me.

I could be persuaded to vote Lib Dem if only they would get their heads out of their arses and acknowledge what a woman actually is rather than pandering to misogynistic loons.

I’d much rather the Tories found their balance again.

I live in a seat that flipped Tory to Lib Dem in 2024 with a majority of just under 500 votes, so could easily be flipped back again.

Very true. Let me know when you find a home! Feeling very similar thoughts…

Rivalled · 22/10/2025 11:14

And if I was being cynical, labour’s dropping the university target for a widening to include apprenticeships is simply a stalking horse for allowing university numbers to fall instead of tuition fees to rise further.

I’m sure they reckon apprenticeships will be cheaper to fund.

there are no great plans on post 16 education.

TheNuthatch · 22/10/2025 11:01

Ah ok, thanks for explaining.

Interesting that you say you were expecting it. I'm expecting a stealth increase to directors tax.

NW.

In terms of the treatment of dividends?

I don’t just drop in. I’ve been in MN since 2008. I’m unsure why you are asking if I have a cat?? I don’t. I don’t at all feel insulted. I’m more shocked and saddened by the narrative here. I am genuinely concerned for what I see with the vulnerable in society and that people assume fraud above the minuscule levels?

amicisimma · 22/10/2025 11:16

It's often said that benefit fraud levels are low. What that means is levels of detected fraud. Let's not forget it took the Bulgarian police to tell us about a massive benefit fraud that our own authorities were apparently unaware of.

The growth of dependency is not sustainable, that’s what the earlier post was highlighting.

Are you saddened by the way this Labour government has failed to reduce the dependency on the state through the promised growth they said they could deliver - not least by taking out massive loans we are now paying massive interest on?

Apparently more students are opting to live at home and commute to save money. The experience of Freshers etc has palled. Also there's so many international students in halls it can be very lonely these days. DS was overwhelmingly outnumbered in halls. Seven in a flat the overseas students wouldn't clean, wash up, talk to anyone. They'd report the mess weekly to housekeeping who did issue fines. They didn't care. They had a lot more money than the UK students.

So basically, all those Polytechnics that were upgraded to University are now going to be Polythechnics again in all but name all to raise money. At this rate a degree will be worth less than an A level.
The cynic in me says there is a dumbing down happening by the back door.

Yes I remember this. I saw some of the photos. There were mansions and expensive cars popping up in a small impoverished village in Bulgaria. The entire bloody area was funded by UK benefits.

I haven’t just ‘come onto this thread’ I’ve been a MN member since 2018. I don’t assume anything about anything. Likewise you are making judgements about my lived experience.

Rivalled · 22/10/2025 11:25

Yes there’s no real plan to improve higher education and apprenticeships, it’s a response to the uni funding crisis which is effectively going to allow places to be cut in support of other ‘positive destinations’

justasking111 · 22/10/2025 11:25

Lots of micro businesses unaffected by VAT because of low turnover could be hit if the VAT threshold is lowered.

They surely can’t go for SMEs again, warnings from businesses have been clear after NI rise.

It’s like anti growth 101. Make it stop. I hope they’re decimated in all elections by, local or GE.

This is a long running thread. If you've been here since 2008/ 2018 then you'll know the difference about being a member of the site and dropping on to a long running thread to derail, heckle and, you know, just complain about women talking about things that you feel entitled to disrupt.

And I’ve been reading if to years… as I do many threads. I don’t often comment for the very reason that it doesn’t feel like a place when you can have a different option any more… clearly a difference of option is not valid.
