Storm Amy

So the season of named storms is upon us, with Amy being the first.
What are the conditions currently like where you are?

Here in the south east, the rain is gradually getting heavier but no hint of the predicted winds yet.

I hope all the MNs in Scotland and NI are safe and sound.

Thanks @ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad

DC are 21 and 17 so thankfully can look after themselves in the morning. Tbh even if I go to bed once DH is home I’ll probably be awake before them both anyway. 🤣 I may have to head out tomorrow to do some costume adjustments and ironing at our local theatre (I’m wardrobe mistress) but the next rehearsal isn’t until Sunday night then the show opens on Monday so that can be fairly flexible as long as it’s done for then at least. If the weather is still rough during the day then I’ll just stay home and chill.

😬😬at still being up before them!!!

I hope you're sleeping now & DH got home at a decent time.

i used to do a lot of theatre, the wardrobe mistress always had had my total admiration.

what show are you doing?

Waiting to board my flight to Glasgow and I'm quietly bricking it 😬

How was your landing?

warmapplepies · 04/10/2025 08:18

Super windy in Cumbria this morning but the flooding has subsided luckily. Lots of debris and it sounds horrendous out there. The cat is protesting because I won’t let him outside 🤣

Glad to hear you had a safe landing @PocketsAndSedition
And you DH got home safely @Tarkan
How sad that the man died @Hollyhobbi I hope you and your community are ok.

It is currently blue skies and sunshine here, but the wind is making scary howling noises.
It is the wind that scares me during a storm, it is just so destructive.
The news is showing a lot of trees down and consequently taking down power lines with them ☹️
I hope the power companies do their best at making repairs ASAP for all those affected.

The actual wheels down part was fine - no bouncing on the runway! But the descent from cruising was a bit wild. Everyone was congratulating the pilot as we disembarked 😅

Sturmundcalm · 04/10/2025 12:00

I got out a walk this morning but feels a bit threatening again now so I think the follow up is about to hit us. One of the main roads near us was shut for several hours earlier this morning due to flooding...

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 04/10/2025 12:17

Sun is out and winds easing here in SW Cornwall. Had a thunderstorm earlier which scared the cat. The bin has gone on a tour of the garden.

Tarkan · 04/10/2025 12:51

I’m just awake after a few hours of broken sleep. I had weird dreams about vampires of all things.

I didn’t realise DC1 was working this morning at 7 so she was up and heading off to work before I was in bed. And she got home before I was awake too. 🤣 Not sure if DC2 is awake yet though.

We’re doing Turn of the Screw (some people might know the story better from the adaptation called The Haunting of Bly Manor). So I’ve had to go into our Victorian cupboard and have an actor in some actual Victorian clothes for the first time since I took over so that’s quite exciting for me. We have two different actors for a couple of the roles so that’s meant double the costumes for them, we’re just a little am dram theatre and don’t do understudies so two sets of costumes is a rare one for us. Then after this we’re doing Alice in Wonderland for panto. I think some people have already heard me wandering around muttering “so many rabbits”. 🤣

We don’t seem to have any damage today but my friend just posted about her very broken fairly new gate and our next door neighbours’ trampoline is looking a bit worse for wear.

UniversityofWarwick · 04/10/2025 15:39

Power is just on. Been off since 9 last night, and it was predicted not til be back til Monday evening.

What a relief I bet!

That's great news @UniversityofWarwick

I hope everyone is OK.
Things seemed to have settled down a bit now here.

We have just been reconnected had no power for nearly 24 hours. North East Scotland. But we are used to power cuts and have a wood burning stove as many do around here for the very reason of staying warm in crazy weather.
It's been pretty wild here still although reduced from the 75-80mph yesterday.

user1476613140 · 04/10/2025 19:06

Wind really picking up again here.

Hummingbird10 · 04/10/2025 19:07

I had a 20 minute walk with my daughter this morning and it was really hard work. Really windy. SELondon. Still chilly. Only spitting rai . Poured down last night. That is the end of the weather update from the SELondin region from my perspective

Tarkan · 04/10/2025 19:17

Still really blustery here and has been all day. Not as bad as last night but still lots of stuff banging around outside. Our Sky reception has been a bit dodgy while watching footy today but not sure if that’s been our end or the outside broadcast side of things as other channels haven’t seemed so bad.

Iamgettingolderandgrumpier · 04/10/2025 19:24

Was supposed to go up to S. Lakes this morning (Saturday) but got messages to say that number of roads are flooded (and have been flooded since heavy rain on Friday) and it’s still raining.

Thanks. Annoyingly this is the first time I’ve had mobile reception since posting at half three and our home hub ( mobile internet) is still offline. Rang Tesco from DP’s phone to try and rearrange the two orders I had for yesterday (one for work) but they couldn’t possibly sort it their end. I pointed out I couldn’t do it as I had no internet but they couldn’t help. Will need to go up to the Co later.

Realised we shouldn’t have indulged in the hot water earlier (two baths and one shower (that was me) as we now have no water. And I never replaced the 10l bottle of water that himself opened in the last storm as he ‘needed’ water in his whisky. At least we have some in a flask still.

GrandTheftWalrus · 05/10/2025 02:08

It seems to be worse tonight which is strange as bbc weather says its calm now. Maybe because im high up.

Flossy1985 · 05/10/2025 06:29

Peak District it’s been blowing like mad 50mph winds up here!

We were on Skye when Amy arrived. Managed to drive safely to Glasgow but the trains was horizontal

The rain?

Sunday afternoon here. Still quite windy, but intermittent sun, and no rain forecast, so I've got some washing on the line!
Potentially the last time I'll get to do it this year, so am enjoying watching it flutter around.
