Storm Amy

So the season of named storms is upon us, with Amy being the first.
What are the conditions currently like where you are?

Here in the south east, the rain is gradually getting heavier but no hint of the predicted winds yet.

I hope all the MNs in Scotland and NI are safe and sound.

It's now just annoying me. My dh is in a cabin right now and his highest recorded gust was 91mph.

crikey!

GrandTheftWalrus · 04/10/2025 02:27

Its not been higher. But hes there all night

SammyScrounge · 04/10/2025 02:38

West of Scotland here. Wind approaching 100mph. I was blown right off my feet and couldn't get up again. Two men came to my rescue , hauled me up and walked me back home. I have never been so grateful to anyone. The wind was.terrifying.

@Tarkan

what time are you expecting DH home?

I'm north Hampshire, it's been raining pretty much all day, it's still raining & very windy. I can't usually sleep with the windows shut, but as I'm not sleeping anyway 🙄🫩🥺. I might try closing them to dull the noise a bit.

Very sad to hear about the man that died🥲

hope everyone (else) gets through the night safe & dry xx

d317 · 04/10/2025 02:51

Wind was getting up at 4pm yesterday. Still wet and windy here in mid Wales.

Tarkan · 04/10/2025 02:56

He’s due to finish around 4ish then by the time he gets to the car and drives home I don’t think I would be expecting him before 4.30.

The good news is that I was tracking his bus on the website and he’s made it back over the Queensferry crossing fine. Looks like it’s running around 15 minutes late but that’s really not bad considering the conditions. I just hope the rest of the journey is ok for him, he called me earlier after his first run and apparently the wind was so strong at one point it shoved the bus into the next lane (thankfully no one was in it) so hopefully there’s not been any more of that for him.

I'm glad he contacted you earlier & youre able to track his bus, it's something to do if nothing else!

Do you have kids that'll need looking after tomorrow (or work) or will you both be able to sleep?

Hope he gets home safe & not too much later than you'd normally expect him xx

Tarkan · 04/10/2025 03:18

Thanks @ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad

DC are 21 and 17 so thankfully can look after themselves in the morning. Tbh even if I go to bed once DH is home I’ll probably be awake before them both anyway. 🤣 I may have to head out tomorrow to do some costume adjustments and ironing at our local theatre (I’m wardrobe mistress) but the next rehearsal isn’t until Sunday night then the show opens on Monday so that can be fairly flexible as long as it’s done for then at least. If the weather is still rough during the day then I’ll just stay home and chill.

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 04/10/2025 03:28

It’s all calmed down a bit here now (Scottish Highlands) but our side gates have blown down. Luckily I spotted it before Ddog took himself for a walk. I nearly killed myself tripping over said gate as I tried to retrieve him. Hopefully the neighbours had all their windows tightly shut as I uttered a few unladylike words.

I’ve just been hit by a tree driving home from work! No damage luckily apart from a few marks but I did have a twig wedged in my window seal 😬

Gosh how scary! Hope you are OK.

WannaFOffOnHoliday · 04/10/2025 04:20

The rain has been bad here... Got the water snake things at the back door as water always cones in. I have tried everything but cant afford to replace the doors.
The snakes are doing the job so far.

Suppose to be windy tomorrow around midday here

MungoforPresident · 04/10/2025 04:23

Until recently, I lived just a few metres from the wild sea on the not very hospitable west of Scotland in my holiday lodge. In this weather, the sea would lash the windows and break over the balcony. So frightening, yet also oddly wonderful, so awe-inspiring to have that force of nature so close.

In the mornings, scraping seaweed from the window glass and uPVC was a frequent thing. Once found a family of crabs stranded in my gutter!

I miss that place so, so much and wish I had not moved. I am now in Norfolk which is great but nothing replaces that wild sea, the gusty wind and getting soaked by sea spray while trying to save chairs and tables from sailing away.

We really get no bad weather where I live now; a splash of light rain is the worst it's ever been in the 2.5 years since I came here.

DH’s bus got back to Dundee but not to the depot yet. He’s in the city centre still despite the fact he should have been back to the depot half an hour ago and the bus has been sitting there for over 20 minutes now. Just hoping all is ok. I’m a worrier at the best of times but it’s hard when I can’t just call him to check in.

He’s just contacted me. The wheelchair lift on the bus has broken so he has no idea how long he will be sitting there and he’s told me just to go to bed, I know I won’t sleep though so at this rate I’ll still be sitting up when most people are getting up for the day I guess. I’m keeping myself occupied with the new Ed Gein programme on Netflix for now anyway. Our internet was playing up earlier but seems ok now thankfully.

Hope you're DH gets home at a reasonable time.
On a different note ED Gein , I wouldn't be going back to sleep after watching anything about him..big involuntary shudder.👍😁

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 04/10/2025 04:47

Aberdeen now calmed down, wind was battering our bedroom window for most of the night.

Yeah I might need to watch something a bit nicer before bed. 😬

DH’s bus is on the move again now so guessing I should hopefully see him around 5.30 now. Tonight’s shift was overtime at 1.5x so at least the delay will be a little extra money in the next paycheque. He’s off “tomorrow” (I mean really it’s today but it still feels like tomorrow when I haven’t slept LOL) so we can have a nice quiet Saturday night in.

mellongoose · 04/10/2025 05:15

Hope DH is home safe soon @Tarkan.

I’ve just been woken by the wind and the back door security light coming on which probably means the chair (heavy and wooden) has been pushed around. Weirdly that’s the part of the house that should be sheltered!

Still sounds blowy out. Cornwall.

Tarkan · 04/10/2025 05:44

DH is finally home safe! Thank you to everyone for all the thoughts tonight. He said it was an absolutely horrendous shift and he’s glad to be home. I’ve made sure the heating is on and a hot cup of tea was ready for him so he can start to warm up a bit too.

Hopefully I can get some sleep now, and fingers crossed for minimal damage for everyone.

Garlicpressups · 04/10/2025 05:55

I'm in the NW here and it's been blowing a hooley all night. High tide is due at 10.00.am but so far no warnings about it "overtopping" further down the coast.

When it gets light I'll be able to see if anyone's weelie-bin has done a dance down the road !
Those neighbours with flagpoles took their flags down yesterday.

ohyesido · 04/10/2025 05:58

Very blowy and rainy here in Essex last night, rain has stopped but still heavy gusts.

secureyourbook · 04/10/2025 05:59

Just woke up and the wind is wild this morning (Wirral) can’t hear any rain though. Yesterday wasn’t as bad rain wise as the bbc weather app suggested, it cleared in the afternoon.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 04/10/2025 06:35

Good morning from Cornwall - been raining all night & pretty blowy but not the worst I’ve experienced here. I remember some humdingers in the early 80s when we first arrived! Although obviously storms cause damage, the effects can be awe inspiring too.

MidlandsGal1 · 04/10/2025 06:57

Very windy in Derbyshire but at least the rain has stopped. Had quite a bit of flooding in my area yesterday but that’s normal with heavy rain.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 04/10/2025 07:10

South Wales: few trees down locally, husband got called into work as emergency last night and was busy all night.
From the window it looked a bit blowy but was pissing down.
