Persons With Brains (or who identify as such) are invited to listen to a fascinating examination of Enoch Powell, whose painfully intellectual (and wrong) examination of issues of immigration were really just a fig leaf for his unbridled ambition.

There may well be lessons to learn.

For the ever curious this is also well worth a watch. Points if you pick up the subtle emerging trend advocating for compulsory euthanasia for those no longer earning their daily bread. The whole interview (it's been sliced into segments) is worth a watch. And we miss Jonathon Miller.

Is Kemi also banning hobbies if they involve being creative or reading?.

I’m fucked if so

In fairness Peaky Blinders suggested as much about Powell…

Probably, You’re practically a useless eater if you spend your leisure time just wafting about in nature, reading and making things. Like those Romantic Poets and William Morris. Wasters.

That’s pretty much all I do. And the things I create are ephemeral - you can’t even take a live performance home.

Oh but you can. In your heart. Think on that, Kemi.

Wish I could waste time in such a useful way!

Dead Ringers is funny with the 'low energy' comments.

PickAChew · 08/10/2025 18:35

Like Gove, she probably sees arts and crafts as time wasted, not making money, completely disregarding the positive effects on mental health and general wellbeing that go along with learning to create something. There's a reason why social prescribers are sending people to craft classes and hobby groups.

countrygirl99 · 08/10/2025 18:58

One of my hobbies is knitting Icelandic sweaters. Does she not realise how much those buggers cost?
My degree was Economics. My career was primarily in financial services. Other hobbies are horse riding, bird watching and volunteering with the local Wildlife Trust (species surveys and maintenance working parties).
Politics leftish. God knows what Kemi would make of me, especially if she knew both my DC have foreign spouse/long term partners and my friendship group is probably 1/3 immigrant.

BIossomtoes · 08/10/2025 19:01

Hopefully this link will work. He says the same as all of us.

I salute you. That is hard to do. And yes they cost a lot. I have one, alas a moth had at it

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2025 19:24

My ds is very STEM. He’s also unusual in that he has an extreme social bias and can code computers fluently in code very few use and yet can’t have simple conversation and his communication is terrible. His English is also dire as a result of this but yet has a photographic memory and can parrot information he’s learned fantastically.

He's also further left than me. I’m centric with left leaning values (probably because I’ve always worked in education) but he’s definitely left wing. He also lives history and facts and watches lots of documentaries and loves learning information.

im with others that I wish degree subjects didn’t get value placed - especially based on economic beliefs.

I’ve no idea where they think future art, music drama and English teachers etc are coming from if you don’t have degrees in these subjects.

unless they next remove arts subjects from GCSEs - and I fear they’ll replace English with “British values” gcse or something equally crap.

As we were talking about intellectuals 😳

🤦🏼‍♀️ sometimes there’s no reasoning with people

Joanne Harris sums up the reason between the Right’s dislike of the arts

Has Kemi being watching Wall Street for some inspiration;

"It’s all about bucks, kid. The rest is conversation.” – Gordon Gekko

Although the upper class Brit played by Terence Stamp, definitely would have been a Tory- don't think he would have liked Kemi's vulgar values! 😂

bombastix · 08/10/2025 20:38

Ah yes, that’s it. The Conservatives are vulgar. And boring.

Even the Spectator has its head turned by Reform’s “Springtime for Nigel” conference. The only show in a right wing town

Bloody birds, flying here illegally without passports, stealing our worms.

Ihad a fabulous one knitted by my sister when I was at university. It went for years and years. Can’t remember when (or why) I let it go. Did smell of wet sheep quite a lot…

DuncinToffee · 08/10/2025 21:29

I looked at them when The Killing was on and was astonished to see just how expensive they were.

bombastix · 08/10/2025 21:32

They are totally amazing though. I remember going to Iceland and seeing the Icelandic men wearing them, and all us tourists wrapped up with many layers! They looked happy, we looked… bulky

I bought one; it is beautifully warm.
