But why aren’t they reminding everyone of their crowning achievement - Brexit.

They dedicated years of Parliamentary time and resources to it and now slither away whenever it is mentioned.

Trying to out Farage Farage is obviously a waste of time but, as with Brexit, it won’t stop them trying.

DuncinToffee · 06/10/2025 10:19

It looks like the Tory 'reset' is going back to 2016 and hope everyone forgets the last 8 years

Oh I think they want to go back much further than 2016.

Karistyleaftea · 06/10/2025 10:33

@cardibach I appreciate what you are saying but I see Polanski as someone who would easily jump ship to the best option for him , rather than having the party's interests at heart.
Just my opinion.

Agree. Seems like Osborne austerity measures on steroids.

Karistyleaftea · 06/10/2025 10:36

Sarcastically .............
Well of course austerity worked before so why not repeat?

BIossomtoes · 06/10/2025 10:42

Very well said. Hopefully more public figures with influence will join him.

Evenstar · 06/10/2025 11:18

@BIossomtoes I am sure it would, but unfortunately in the real world real people with one property that they never wanted to let out couldn’t actually afford to do that.

Last year I undertook nearly £20,000 of roof repairs so that more than wiped out the rental income. Not all landlords are sitting on huge portfolios of property with vast incomes. Mine is managed by a good agent and repairs are always carried out promptly and all gas safety checks etc in place. Not sure what more anyone could do, it feels very hard to have had the Truss disaster and then be blamed for being a landlord as well.

dontcallmelen · 06/10/2025 11:51

I wouldn’t trust Polanski as far as I could throw him.
just heard on the radio the five thousand pounds proposal given to young people who find employment would be from cuts in public services doesn’t appear as though they’ve learned anything from austerity utter foolishness.

Saucery · 06/10/2025 12:38

I think Polanski is a loathsome, self serving individual and the chances of me voting Green nationally or locally with him at the helm are zero. I have voted Green in the past, but absolutely not now.

I would like to know whether the Tories ' proposal for no benefits for non UK citizens includes the state pension. I mean, if you want to be a tax haven like Dubai, you need to offer carrot as well as stick - do they not get this?

They have now confirmed it does not include state pension

They say that apart from pensions, if you are a (non-EU) non-UK citizen you would be barred from receiving any benefits of any kind, irrespective of how long you have been in the country and/or how much tax you have paid.

Really need this message getting across and good on him, wish there were more - could do with a Bruce Springsteen in the U.K. !

So. You could be living in the UK for decades and decades. You'd get the state pension only and nothing else. No help with rent. No Council Tax benefit. No WFA. No AA if you become very ill. What about if you need residential care?

It is just bullshit, unworkable and cruel.

MsJinks · 06/10/2025 13:10

Childcare is a big one for UC - you may not get any other benefit but a %age of childcare is paid even upto a quite reasonable income - because it’s so expensive. It skews figures I think of ‘those on benefits’ as well - hard one to totally lose.
I’m not sure that when Tories/Reform have spent foreign national benefits savings they won’t save more by stopping U.K. national benefits.
Also - Kemi - there are some, and I’m not amongst them, who don’t really care for a Brit cit title unless you trace back a billion generations- I feel like she’s selling out her peers, but maybe it’s not a valid viewpoint.
I think that Tory/Reform is a future possibility- an awful one obviously- stuff of nightmares, so hope I’m wrong.

Saucery · 06/10/2025 13:14

It’s hardly going to encourage those people to pay their taxes, is it? I know I damn well wouldn’t if I were in their position and could possibly work my way round it.

placemats · 06/10/2025 13:46

Yes, it's the argument that you put money aside for 'non essential' operations with lengthy waiting lists rather than pay monthly into private health insurance.

That is still disgusting. As I said, if they want the UK to be Dubai, they need to offer incentives. Why should people pay for a safety net if they are not allowed to use it?

DuncinToffee · 06/10/2025 15:04

The only difference with Reform is the wages threshold, £38,700 versus £60,000.

I think you are wrong. It is workable, it’s just a very unpleasant effect.

Looks like we will be modelled on personal favourite places for how ‘I can make lots of money/have no immigration’ - UAE (Tice/Farage) or Trump’s US (Kemi/Farage) - interesting crossover.
Hope we are saved from either of course.

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2025 15:55

Going to try attaching this article by David Gauke. I don’t have an awful lot of luck with the stupid share tokens so apologies if it doesn’t work.

But UAE has shit loads (technical term) of immigrants. They are the ones that do all the work.

Ah yes- I nearly put or only immigration slash slave trade but went with leaving it out. Tbh I do actually think that would be the preference of Tice et Al - and probably many more - just thought I would ignore that thought of mine in the hopes it’s not really true.
