BBC points out that Andy Burnham will have an uphill struggle to make it to Dear Leader, at least in the short term.
Firstly as he trades on his “Proud Northerner” roots he will have to find a safe seat in the Manchester area that someone is willing to step down from (2 MPs have already said they don’t step down).
Then he needs to get approved as a candidate, and as the group that approves candidates is full of Starmer cronies that will not be easy.
Then he’s got to actually get elected which, in the current climate, is not a given.
Finally he’d need to secure enough support of other MPs to trigger a leadership contest.
So all in all I’d say there’s no way they could get that all done prior to next May’s elections. Afterwards will depend on the results.
