Pull up a chair for some friendly chit chat about politics and beyond

Taxes optional but greatly appreciated.

"A senior adviser to Keir Starmer has resigned after it was revealed he sent inappropriate messages about the Labour MP Diane Abbott eight years ago.

Paul Ovenden quit on Monday as the prime minister’s director of political strategy after details emerged about a sexually explicit WhatsApp conversation he had in 2017"

Yuk. 🤢 I don't think Starmer can be blamed for this one. But it doesn't help matters. I wonder who leaked the messages?

My heating puts itself on. It’s thermostat controlled and I never switch that off. I don’t care what the date is, if it’s cold I want the heating on. It clicked on this morning for a bit. It’s set to come on for a couple of hours in the morning and all evening if the temp in the living room drops below 19, so not extravagant. I had it set at 18 last year but that was a bit miserable.

Edited

Mine too.

its set at 18° all year round but I will pop it up to 20° if we are in all day during the winter as 18° is only warm enough if moving around and cooking. Any colder is uncomfortable!

now ds mostly works from home I’ve shown him how to increase the thermostat if needed but as he works at the computer that generally radiates enough heat for him!

itsgettingweird · 15/09/2025 16:26

Evenstar · 15/09/2025 13:03

I use my heated throw a lot, I have fibromyalgia so have to keep warm or I have a lot more pain.

Yes ds and I have heated throws.

I also have a fan that’s also a heater in the lounge in the coffee table and I put the heater on for a few minutes last night and again this morning.

it’s enough to keep the lounge warm if we are sitting in it watching TV/ eating dinner when the rest of the house is ok for moving around!

Anyone fancy talking about the employment rights bill and Farage/Reforms opposition to it ?

Well in the words of Mandy Rice-Davies they would say that wouldn’t they.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2025 16:17

I mean, I will?

There's a few on MN opposed too.

It's Reforms Achilles heel - overwhelming support from people who claim they support reform, and some shock from them when you demonstrate how opposed their beloved "change in politics" is to it.

That's encouraging and perhaps demonstrative of the advantage they have over Reform, i.e. they are the elected government in power.

It's popular though with workers.

My late mum's cleaner got the living wage - mum insisted.

itsgettingweird · 15/09/2025 17:05

I’ve yet to catch up on the ins and outs of the bill but on the surface workers rights sounds like a great thing and reform opposing it sounds even better (shallow 😂)

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2025 17:05

Yes, I believe the MN contingent who are not keen are not 'the workers'. As the article says the people benefited don't know about it.

Evenstar · 15/09/2025 17:08

@itsgettingweird we have a couple of fan heaters just to take the chill off in the living room and the bedroom.

Evenstar · 15/09/2025 17:10

We do have the heating on thermostat anyway, I find if I let myself get really cold I suffer for it so it’s a false economy.

Sorry to hear about your puss cat @cardibach

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 15/09/2025 17:14

Fingers crossed for your cat's vet visit tomorrow @cardibach.

I don't think many of them really want rights taken away from them. They just need to be informed that that is exactly what Reform is doing

In the absence of a GE, then letting these rights settle, and making keeping them a manifesto pledge would certainly help to isolate the more extreme parties

It's one thing to prime someone to bore on about NI rises being a "tax on jobs" (which should have been news to no one who has ever done a days work ....). It's another to get them to say "these new rights are a bit crap aren't they"..Especially if people actually see these rights working for themselves, their families and their colleagues.

There is a reason why the push for Reform is so insistent and - dare I say it - every so slightly hysterical. Because it will be harder and harder to maintain the longer Labour have to bring in changes they will be forced to reverse.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/09/2025 17:39

Danny Kruger 😂 they really do attract the brightest and best.

Commiserations to whichever of you now has a reform MP.

cardibach · 15/09/2025 17:41

Thanks for the cat good wishes @Evenstar and @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats
She seems okish. Bit sleepy. Does still follow me around, but she’s not eating right and sneezing repeatedly, which offends her. Hope it’s cheap to fix, whatever it is…

dontcallmelen · 15/09/2025 17:48

Hope CardiCat Is much better very soon.

BIWI · 15/09/2025 17:49

Good luck at the vet, @cardibach - both from the point of view of sorting out the cat, but also keeping the damage to your purse to a minimum!

Evenstar · 15/09/2025 17:51

Just seen this quoted on Bluesky, it seems to be taken from an anti racism group on Facebook. Our HCP’s shouldn’t be in fear of these vile scum, and I agree with the comments about the other parties ceding the ground to Reform and chasing votes they will never win.

Oh no cardi I hope your cat is ok and she’s not too expensive to fix!

There’s a lot of mold spores around currently and I’ve been sneezing if I go within 10ft of a bush 😂

Evenstar · 15/09/2025 18:01

@itsgettingweird I think the mould and spores seem worse earlier this year, everyone is sneezing.

That’s a powerful statement.

can’t disagree either

placemats · 15/09/2025 18:09

Much cat love @cardibach

It's quite the thing when a mega survey funded by a multimillionaire who supports Labour, produces results that mean real benefits for workers, especially those who are lower paid.

The counterpoint seems to be to lower income tax for the least well off in terms of a working income by a pittance, an incentive that has devastating consequences when it comes to a state pension. Totally agree that this bill should and will be voted through. A legacy for Angela Raynor - and well deserved.

DuncinToffee · 15/09/2025 18:12

Any suggestions for a new thread title?

The mould spores have been pretty bad with all the damper weather after a long dry spell. They play havoc with my sinuses. I hope it's "just" an allergy making her feel miserable and nothing more unpleasant, @cardibach 😺

And my heating has just come on. Draughty 1930s chalet bungalow with suspended floor and a DS2 who will only ever wear one layer on top around the house.
