It is cold here and tipping it down, which is not helping my already gloomy outlook.

People forget how long 2019 to 2024 was. We have a good 3 years before an election. In that time in 2019-2024 we;d had COVID and a "surprise" (to who ?) Russian invasion plus the complexities of Brexit.

I am old enough to remember when Harold Wilsons resignation meant we were in for a Conservative government in 1976. And the Labour government then had no majority.

I agree - I pointed out on another thread that the only possibility of an election before 2029 is if there is a massive backbench rebellion meaning that Labour can't get a majority to carry bills.

It's not impossible - but I doubt that enough Labour MPs would decide to behave like turkey's voting for Christmas.

I don't know. If a load of masked men turned up at enough MPs homes, I am quite sure they could be persuaded to vote no confidence. You'd only need 1000 per house and there were 100,000 waving flags around yesterday. Telegraph would probably offer a years free access to their website for participants.

I don't think you should give out ideas like this...

It's a shame a load of PAG protestors didn't march with the main march yesterday. It would have made for an interesting afternoon.

Starmer is toast is very much media talk. He can't win with them.

McSweeny should be toast though

Oh yes. Totally agree 💯

The only road to an election before July 2029 is a vote of no confidence in the commons

No, the PM can call a GE whenever they like. Remember Theresa May's surprise GE?

The Tories were in utter turmoil then. Because Brexit. They actually had to do some work!

Personally I wish we could lose the rain 🌧 part of British culture. It is starting to get me down.

I went for a walk along the Beach today.
Was Blowy but the rain held off until
about 1 minute after we got back int he car - luckily because it didn’t half come down!

itsgettingweird · 14/09/2025 18:00

MaybeNotBob · 14/09/2025 12:59

Who was looking to silence you?

Ah, this is the typical right wing "freeze peach" nonsense they trot out when someone disagrees with them.

I have noticed this as general rule in life currently.

The ability to debate facts has disappeared.

If someone disagree with facts the response is usually “I have a right to my opinion”.

Well yes you do, but opinions aren't facts. You have a right to form an opinion based on the facts you read and the right to share that opinion.

You don’t have the right to incite violence. And being arrested for inciting violence is not arrested for “hurty words”

I love having chats to my sensible friends about politics and often find even those of us with opposing views on parties have many common values.

itsgettingweird · 14/09/2025 18:09

PandoraSocks · 14/09/2025 16:45

I have probably watched a Very British Coup (the Ray McAnally version) too many times 😅

In all seriousness, I think Starmer is toast.

I think Starmer could be toast.

Not so much in a GE sense but because the thing I respected him for - being centre left is what he’s moving too far right away from.

The party stands the risk of imploding itself - again. Which after the Tory’s just did the same thing you’d have thought they’d have learned from their previous mistakes as well as the Tory’s.

Karistyleaftea · 14/09/2025 18:55

I completely disagree that Sir Keir Starmer is toast.

Keep saying it though if you think it helps the media to get their message across.

No offence intended to anyone, especially anyone who is struggling, particularly on this dreary, dank and wet day.
At least it is down here on the South coast!
It is only my opinion and people have many varied opinions on here.

PandoraSocks · 14/09/2025 19:18

It is nothing to do with helping the media push its message Karistyleaftea. I am obviously not here for that. I have been posting on these threads since Partygate.

I personally now don't think he is up to the job of being PM. The Mandelson fiasco was completely avoidable and shows a massive lack of judgement.

Perhaps he will prove me wrong over the next few months. I sincerely hope so.

itsgettingweird · 14/09/2025 19:18

IIRC Karisty we are quite close to each other? Certainly very wet here on my bit of south coast 😂

I like Starmer and I liked that he was more centre left. But he does need to get control of the party infighting or they risk going the same way as the Tory’s. Labour are a left wing party. They need to remain as such to give people a decent left wing party to vote for. Not far left but left enough of centre to remain viable.

MsJinks · 14/09/2025 21:12

Veering back a couple of pages, I understand that people are disaffected, however I think those marching made a choice to stand behind a known racist, convicted fraudster/thug, who platformed non U.K. nationals to tell us what to do (the irony!) and turns out that involved hearing how shite the U.K. is and they need to fight.
I also chose to March with people whose views don’t necessarily align with mine on all matters to be transparent, but some things I would draw a line on I think.
It’s not even stopping at immigrants though - at the front of our March were women, as we are the ‘excuse’ for racist actions and for my side it was important to counter that. But further the views that were widely seen in Unite the Kingdom, include some very worrying stuff for women - our rights will follow migrants rights down the pan. Though as patriots who think britain can be greater without foreigners it’s strange we want to import those views. Maybe marching alongside these people is ok ‘to get your country back’ but in my opinion you should be thoughtful where you hang your hat if you don’t want assumptions made about your views.

I've written to Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage, urging them to join me in condemning Elon Musk's dangerous remarks inciting violence yesterday.

As leaders, we must stand together and make clear Musk will face serious consequences for these actions.

@DuncinToffee - read incorrectly and first thought you personally had written to Frog - I was debating whether I could actually bring myself do that.
Wonder how Frog will go - Musk isn’t a fan, so he loses little by condemning it and trying to look respectable. But maybe he hopes he can ‘win’ him back so, we will see.
All 3 should condemn foreign inciting but maybe it’s ’free speech’ for Kemi and Nige - sigh.
Probably be a ‘feel’ response with no real concrete answer from Frog. Support for musk from Kemi and some Ltd condemnation from Keir - if I had to bet I think.

Interesting article in The Guardian about the popular appeal of the Workers' Rights Bill - especially amongst Reform inclined ex Labour voters:

https://www.theguardian.com/law/2025/sep/14/starmer-urged-to-make-populist-case-for-workers-rights-reforms

This is where the government really need to pull their fingers out with comms. Rather than fighting Reform with Reform lite, they need to carry out their aims to address some of the underlying issues that are causing so much disaffection and make a blood big noise about it.

DuncinToffee · 15/09/2025 08:39

Amol Rajan: Do you condemn Musk's words on Saturday?

Jacqui Smith: "Absolutely I do. Those words were wrong & they were dangerous… For Elon Musk to talk about violence in our political system… is wholly unacceptable."

Yes, agree.

I think they are underplaying it because they spend so much time worrying about who won't like things.

Piggywaspushed · 15/09/2025 09:59

This is a really sad story and somewhat apposite to the ideas circulating about Afghanistan and Afghan men in particular

I haven't got it in me to put it on any of those threads.

Labour have a large majority, they can get pretty much anything through parliament yet they are acting as though they need support to push through their agenda.

They need to have the courage of their convictions and ignore the noise. Get back to their roots, stop chasing reform and start delivering. Ed Davey is on the money at the moment.
