I have two solar generators, not bought for this, we live in the sticks and frequently seem to have power cuts! They are good for free electricity anyway.

Have some water and LED candles and rechargeable batteries.

That's it. That's my level of preparedness.

tramtracks · 02/09/2025 18:16

Yes - the DM is sensationalist.

However - we do need to be very prepared for another global conflict. Every century has been marred by such wars - we are complacent if we think our generation will be spared. There is no doubt in my mind that I will see a war before I die. Probably a joint Russia/CN land grab which NATO can’t ignore.

Jokes aside, I actually (and sadly) agree with you. And it's the most terrifying of all the worst-case scenarios I pathologically tend to daydream about.
Damn war.

Daily fail though...

Clickbait wankers...
Not even got to Halloween chocolate having to be halal because of migrants yet...

Amazed that people keep getting themselves worked up like this. Come on.

Amazed that people don’t understand the threat.

What they need to do is harness the power of mumsnet, all of whom can make a chicken last a week, manage every eventuality calmly without raising their voice and who would prove a fearsome enemy.

That's the issue - they send the wrong people. If every country sent their 50+ year old women to war then we'd have it sorted in a week.

😂😂😂😂

RigIt · 02/09/2025 21:14

Cheepcheepcheep · 01/09/2025 21:20

War doesn’t look like war nowadays. It doesn’t look like guns and bombs a lot of the time. It looks like cyber attacks and stuff. It’s a digital Cold War, and it’s been going on for ages - we’re already at war. I find it oddly comforting.

Tell that to Ukraine.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 02/09/2025 21:16

It's wise to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Anyone who thinks that the uk could never possibly be at war at any point in the future for any reason is a fool.

RigIt · 02/09/2025 21:21

FollowSpot · 01/09/2025 21:44

Actually we have absolutely fantastic Mountain Rescue Teams, Lifeboat crews and the like who are expert volunteers, brave and skilled. Fire fighters. All sorts of people,

Ummm We have fuck all military and military “equipment”. We haven’t even maintained our “war book” so have no plan if it does happen (or even a plan to start preparations), we have no money to sort this and putting these things together can’t be done overnight. We were woefully unprepared for Covid and even less prepared for war. If it happens we are fucked unless we get a lot of help from elsewhere. It would also probably bankrupt us. We have no money as it is.

LouiseK93 · 02/09/2025 21:22

I saw the words Daily Mail and instantly decided not to click the link 😂
However, IF we were involved in another WW, we would be fucked. Our army doesnt have enough men. Those in training dont even get kicked out if they test positive for drugs, just get sent back to week one of training . It would be likely that people get drafted like WW1&2.
I curious though...women did not fight in the last wars, but now there are women in the army. Would women get drafted too? How would they even choose who fights?

Sorted in a week?? MN would be starting a war over whether or not you should open the door to unexpected visitors!

Which in fairness would pretty much win the battle...
'We're being invaded...' ''
Don't open the door - we're not expecting anyone. Pretend to be out.'

Sorted!

That’s true.

And has anyone tried a MN tinkly laugh and “did you mean to be so rude” on Putin?

Exactly, and Gaza.

I mean it's emergency preparedness

I do think it's unlikely kids born today will never know war, though

Have there ever been generations who do not know war?

PS Tea/Coffee & a way to make those drinks is good! Great morale!

And some treats - sweets or whatever.

Wine and whisky would be good too

Weird stuff been going on in New Jersey US for months now.
New tech being flown.
I dont know about France but something is happening over there.

That's for the dictatorship coming your way.

celticnations · 02/09/2025 23:01

I think it unwise to not be self-sufficient for 7 days at least.

Water. Food. Light. Heat. Medical. Hygiene. Entertainment (board games; books). Communication eg crank radio - how would you know that your area is to be evacuated?

Build up bit by bit. Don't bankrupt yourself buying scented candles.

The Armed Forces used to teach "14 days kit". (14 days being the time for any Fall Out to be back down to "safe levels" if I remember right?) God Forbid.

I now help teach new military aircrew.

Be prepared. May never happen. But be prepared.

National Resilience starts with You.

So there 😃

Scandinavia have been preparing for war for a couple of years now.

Western europe appears to have been ignoring this - or at least there have been no media reports until now.

I have relatives in sweden/Denmark and they see fighter planes training on a semi-regular basis.

I’ve lived near an RAF base in Yorkshire for the past 15 years and see the fighter jets out training all the time. Always have done. I don’t think it means anything particularly.

agathamum24 · 02/09/2025 23:50

If you’re seriously worried about war, then you’re a bit late to the game. As a country, the UK has been upsetting other countries for years, best you go buy some tins of baked beans and a few batteries, they’ll put you right……

Joloman74 · 03/09/2025 06:18

It's always men starting wars! Little men stamping their feet and getting their guns out. If us women were all in charge we'd have everything sorted in a day and still manage to run a house and take care of the kids! Fact!

Fragmentedbrain · 03/09/2025 07:01

LovePoppy · 02/09/2025 22:25

Have there ever been generations who do not know war?

In the UK nobody has had to live through war since 1945

FlappingMadly · 03/09/2025 07:19

There has been news about it. It seems very likely the EU and allies agreed to arm Ukraine to keep Putin busy so he has no time to upgrade decrepit nukes etc. It gives time to rearm - lots contracts flying around. For Putin it is ideological and he must save face or Russia will revolt - it's on the brink. Putin has no plan b. He must have a deal, whatever he says. Ukraine cannot agree to the deal he wants. Cracks are showing in the pro Russia whacko club in the US. As Putin has no money cyber disruption and escalating threats are the only thing he has. We should take seriously his rage about remilitarising but it absolutely must continue. He knows if he doesn't get Ukraine he's done and desperate mad despotics do mad bad things.

MuDew · 03/09/2025 08:24

Well, I'd start by reading a better quality, more factually driven news source that isn't so hyperbolic.

Russia has been sabre rattling for years now, even pre Ukraine. We are arguably already in a third world war, but it looks different to how we may have imagined.

The strategy for Russia isn't to go West, but to go North West. Russia wants the seas to the North, China the South. So, Scotland is in peril, as are the Nord8c states.

This has been so for a good decade or more. What we're seeing now is an amplification of that action.

I wouldn't pay attention to right wing gutter tabloids. What they're reporting on is a re-militrification of Europe, largely in response to the current US Administration's shift away from Nato values and the post WW II agreement between the US, UK, and Europe. So it's just a , correct, response to a changing geopolitical landscape.

Go have a brew, read Bella.

Not entirely true. There have been plenty of wars involving the uk since 1945. Between then and now for example pretty much every single country that was part of the British empire ahead fought and won independence. Then there’s thatcher’s little war in the in the Falkland/malvinas Islands …

Ferrit6 · 03/09/2025 09:54

honeyytoast · 01/09/2025 22:00

I seriously think that last part is actually true. If women ran the world I’m not sure how many wars we would have had

plenty of evil , power hungry women out there too - these warmongering males often had some weird rearing too so women aren’t blameless they are often propping up the despots in the world
