I have extra salt in already and a snow shovel. I'm ready for snow.

I also have a few additional tins of beans & sausages and a tin opener. Ready for war too

Go me!!!!

FrippEnos · 02/09/2025 18:47

I've got my towel so I'm good.

Where we live, in a 12 month period we lost internet, gas & water. Not all together at once, mind.

The 2 big local supermarkets incl. attached petrol stations could only take cash. No internet.

We invested in a portable bioethanol fire the year before. Heat sorted.

We fell down on the water. But now have 2 camping showers, wipes various & bottled water 😀

celticnations · 02/09/2025 18:57

PS Tea/Coffee & a way to make those drinks is good! Great morale!

And some treats - sweets or whatever.

tommyhoundmum · 02/09/2025 19:01

I've been hoarding Cadbury's buttons for months now against such as event.

The UK government decided that UK wide public resilience was too expensive. That's our starting point. Base line. Zero.

Since then we've had the Heathrow sub-power station outage. We can only hope that we've learnt from this & that somewhere public servants are beavering away at improving resilience.

It behoves everyone to do some form of preparation as per GOV.UK website advice for Emergency Preparedness.

Eg bottled water/canned food/batteries/candles-matches/crank radio-torch.

Medication?

Think how would I drink, eat, see in the dark, keep warm for 3 days (I'd plan a week but GOV.UK says 72 hours).

I think the Dutch government didn't cut as much in the national resilience budgets as the UK, but I do know we also need to up our game. The Dutch gov also started a similar campaign about household emergency preparedness last winter

What they need to do is harness the power of mumsnet, all of whom can make a chicken last a week, manage every eventuality calmly without raising their voice and who would prove a fearsome enemy.

That's the issue - they send the wrong people. If every country sent their 50+ year old women to war then we'd have it sorted in a week.

but the grudges would be eternal ... :)

Not really scaremongering Sal. Just made me laugh really as we're so piss poor at everything in the UK. Like, seriously how the hell would we ever be ready for war...😆😅😅😅

Yet we always seem to manage when push comes to shove.
But if you WILL read the Daily Mail.. 😂

Really 🥺 tell that to people in Ukraine that it's only cyber attacks and stuff! FFS.

I totally take your point and I did later follow up to say I’m very grateful and very aware my version of ‘living during warfare’ is allowing me a normal version of life. I do think there a difference with Ukraine as it’s an old school land grab (as in Gaza) whereas any war that will be waged against us won’t be for territory so much as power and money. But yes my first post could have been more nuanced.

TheQuirkyMaker · 02/09/2025 07:59

You are right. It is written in an awkward way, though, with two negatives in one sentence.

It’s written in the English language.

dannyufcfan · 02/09/2025 19:29

Amazed that people keep getting themselves worked up like this. Come on.

Nikki7506 · 02/09/2025 19:36

We've been at war with Russia since they started cyber attacks, chemical attacks and assassinations on UK soil.
Putin wants the old USSR band back together again. He'll do it now Trump is back, because Trump won't help the UK or the EU in a fight.
We are in an arms race against Russia.
The UK and Europe need to tool up as quickly as possible. Our defences are appalling here at home. War is inevitable I'm afraid, unless Putin dies and hopefully his replacement would rather not have conflict.

StinkyWizzleteets · 02/09/2025 19:44

Cheepcheepcheep · 01/09/2025 21:20

War doesn’t look like war nowadays. It doesn’t look like guns and bombs a lot of the time. It looks like cyber attacks and stuff. It’s a digital Cold War, and it’s been going on for ages - we’re already at war. I find it oddly comforting.

Have you watched the news recently?

StrawberryJangle · 02/09/2025 19:48

Of course everything will grind to a halt. It's the wrong type of war.

Livelovebehappy · 02/09/2025 19:53

Well for a start, it’s to be hoped it’s not going to be a soldiers on the ground type of war. Because then we would be screwed. There’d be thousands of young lads claiming exemption, because I honestly don’t think today’s generation of potential soldiers will be up to the task….

Solange1973 · 02/09/2025 19:59

French hospitals have been requested to be ready to potentially look after 20000 to 50000 wounded soldiers.

It’s easy to have the I am alright Jack attitude when you live on a small island which, incidentally, has done all it could to separate from Europe.

When you live on the continent, the possibility of war is much more obvious. Scandinavian countries have been preparing for years as they would be the first to be hit after Poland.

What do you think Russia, China, Iran, India and North Corea discuss when they meet? Knitting patterns??

The economic war is already on. And it’s only the beginning. This may or may not turn into actual war but if it does (and bear in mind we have some serious nutters at the helm of some of those foreign nations currently) then yes, we ARE fucked. On more than one level.

Whether the UK is getting ready and not telling us (I live in a garrison town and I can tell you that there certainly has been a lot more activity than usual in the last few months) or whether we are so blissfully unaware and we actually believe this would never be our war, who knows.

But then again, what are we most concerned about in the UK? Immigration.
Yeah, that’s a good way to distract us from the reality of what’s going on out there…

Womblingmerrily · 01/09/2025 21:09

We'll be fine.

Just get the kettle on. Have a brew.

You'll feel better.

And choc. digestives.

Lyraloo · 02/09/2025 20:15

could you imagine all the mummy’s turning up with notes for why their little darlings couldn’t fight?

Gonners · 02/09/2025 20:19

@GypsyQueeen : In what I take to be the spirit of your OP, I offer you the late, great Tom Lehrer's take on it ... from his 1959 album, An Evening (wasted) with Tom Lehrer.

Bluesandwhites · 02/09/2025 20:24

The BBC World Service news implied France is in a state of near bankruptcy, with severe money problems. A " no confidence vote" was also mentioned for the French government.

AlaKart · 02/09/2025 20:31

We used to be good at war. Ask the French.
