Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

My TV, AV receiver and media player are all powered off a smart plug, so get turned off off by my Alexa rather than standby.

MyDeftDuck · 30/07/2025 17:51

Off at the socket…….seen a few fires in my time

PrincessSakura · 30/07/2025 17:52

Can’t say I’ve ever turned a TV off at the wall, I didn’t realise that was a thing!

SecrettSquirrel · 30/07/2025 17:54

Leave it on Standby, I also leave the microwave on if that helps, due to the clock staying on although I have to confess its not had the correct time since the last mini power cut..... Although as I sit here mentally counting up devices left on permanently in a state of standby, I guess that applies to them all... so ummm, my electric toothbrush sits on its charger and is plugged in and switched on... my laptop is always on and my tv in both the living room and yes, my bedroom are either on or on standby.. my phones are both plugged in and I need to skip a few things here and get to my air fryer which I do not leave on standby or anything else....I DO leave my shower on where it has that switch that hangs from the ceiling that we are supposed to switch off between uses... Does anyone else turn that bathroom shower switch off?

Namechangerage · 30/07/2025 17:54

Standby unless going away. Plug not so easy to access

Carpedimum · 30/07/2025 18:09

Stand by - it does software updates at random times.

sixtiesbaby88 · 30/07/2025 18:12

Ours is on standby unless we go on holiday. We once went away for a week and on the second day unknown to us there was a power cut at our house. The tv automatically turned itself on when the power came back, and was then on loudly for 5 days. We now unplug when we go away!

QuaintPanda · 30/07/2025 18:16

At the wall. We have the telly and the various bits plugged into it on a multiway, surge-protector extension lead, which has its own on/off switch. The lead is positioned so its switch is easily accessible.

TubeScreamer · 30/07/2025 18:20

always on standby

Anyahyacinth · 30/07/2025 18:29

Unicorn34 · 30/07/2025 11:29

Off by the remote but not unplugged. My husband is a retired firefighter and there's not much we are allowed to leave on.

I was going to say the same thing..fire safety training it was a number one thing not to do…devices left on standby

taxidriver · 30/07/2025 18:30

off overnight

MisfitMagpie · 30/07/2025 18:30

I switch it off at the plug overnight and when going out, if away on holiday I will unplug it.

ZippyDeer · 30/07/2025 18:32

I always turn the tele plug off but leave on Sky for recordings. Like you I want to reduce risk of fire.

Ddakji · 30/07/2025 18:38

Neither. I switch it off with the button on the side of the TV.

It’s quite a old TV.

user2848502016 · 30/07/2025 18:38

SecrettSquirrel · 30/07/2025 18:56

No, but moving the floor to ceiling bookcase that’s in front of the plug socket would be 😂

Ah - well that would be a problem!😁

justasking111 · 30/07/2025 19:20

We had a tremendous thunderstorm one summer I was in hospital at the time all the electrics cut out, at home husband at the top of the garden saw two strikes on our house. When he got in the TV, computer and washing machine were fried.

I remember as a child unplug everything.

mondaytosunday · 30/07/2025 20:22

Standby.

WinterNightStars · 30/07/2025 20:23

Standby unless away on hols.

TranceNation · 30/07/2025 20:37

Yep, permanently on standby, except for when we go away on holidays etc then all plugs switched off.

popcornpower2025 · 30/07/2025 14:37

I haven't had a tv with buttons on it for many years

We have been trying to work out how old ours is. We think we may have bought it in 2006 or so. I had forgotten how long we’d had it.

LemonBeagle · 30/07/2025 21:53

I am trying not to as in an incredibly bored moment I researched electricity costs and worked out switching plugs off would save around £75 a year.

I have an Alexa to remind me to switch plugs and lights off!

OhNoMyChocMelted · 30/07/2025 21:55

Standby unless on holiday.
