Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

Standby. Who turns off plugs? They barely use any electricity in standby mode these days.

Blueyshep · 31/07/2025 18:31

Standby always, even if we go away for a couple of weeks

SabreIsMyFave · 31/07/2025 18:32

Always on standby. I don't know anyone who switches it off at the plug!

Natsku · 31/07/2025 18:33

Our remote you can switch off normally, to standby, or shut down. I don't unplug it though (no switches on the sockets here - one thing I do miss about the UK!)

Off by the remote but not unplugged. My husband is a retired firefighter and there's not much we are allowed to leave on.

I am paranoid and switch everything off at the plug. My partner thinks I am crazy.
Please could you explain the increased fire risk by leaving on standby so I can explain to my partner.

ForPlumReader · 31/07/2025 18:44

Button on TV, never leave it on standby

PumpKim · 31/07/2025 18:55

Standby at night. if we're out we leave it on on for the dog 🤣

Vaxtable · 31/07/2025 18:56

i have one old TV that actually switches off. The others are on standby because I can’t be bothered to go behind them to switch off at the plug

Sadworld23 · 31/07/2025 19:01

ReplaceTheLinen · 30/07/2025 11:25

Switched off at the wall. We only use it in the evenings for the most part.

Hrft but same

Chinsupmeloves · 31/07/2025 19:02

Used to pull out the plug but not anymore.

nadine90 · 31/07/2025 19:09

At the wall because it’s on an extension lead with chargers and I’ve been scared with horror stories. I leave the WiFi box on though and if it was plugged directly in to the wall I’d just leave it on standby

genxraver · 31/07/2025 19:09

Ours are on smart plugs so I can shout at Alexa to switch off at the wall, rather than leaving on standby and to save having to go behind the cupboards.I sometimes do it from my phone when out if I forget !

Bunniemalone · 31/07/2025 19:11

WiFi plug on a timer, makes me go to bed at a decent time, as TV turns itself off 😂

Plinkyplink · 31/07/2025 19:14

On standby here. Only time we ever switch off at the wall if when the TV is playing up and needs a reboot

Jakolantern · 31/07/2025 19:20

Strollingby · 30/07/2025 11:31

Switch off using button on TV. Only on standby if coming back to it in an hour or two.

This

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 31/07/2025 19:21

When I had a TV I left it on standby bc I was told that turning it off damaged flat screen TV's.

Loads of responses lol! I'll read them later...

I personally always switch off at the wall but it's starting to give me a bad back and I'm wondering if it's really necessary! I switch plugs off almost everywhere other than WiFi and fridge.

Fear of fire is the only reason.

We have remotely operated control plug things. So TV is plugged into control plug thing, then into wall. Special remote controller switches the control plug off without need for fishing round and switching it off at the wall. Table lights on other control plugs, all operated by same remote, so I can sit in my chair and switch everything on and off without bending. Or even moving.

NoodleHorses · 31/07/2025 19:30

I turn it off with the physical off switch or the wall. Just been given a new (to me) TV, it’s off at the wall as I can find no switches.
Microwave off at the wall too. I never leave anything on standby.

JennyBG · 31/07/2025 19:32

Ours is always turned off. All plugs are in an extension that take five plugs. We just take the tv one out. As for overnight recording, the tv doesn’t need to be plugged in for that.

OrigamiOwls · 31/07/2025 19:32

Standby always...as the wall plug cants be accessed without moving furniture out

Theunamedcat · 31/07/2025 19:33

One is in use daily that is kept on standby the others are turned off at the plug

Angrymum22 · 31/07/2025 19:39

Historically unplugged at the wall. DF was a safety expert and would cite lightening strike and subsequent fire as the reason. But I don’t remember pulling the aerial out of the socket which would be the obvious source of lightening damage. These were TVs we owned pre remote control or standby. But they were comparatively hugely more expensive than modern TVs and circuit breakers were non existent.
I think that lightening strike causes damage and the TV is the least of your worries.
DF was a Yorkshire man by nature if not by birth so standby would have annoyed him from a financial point of view rather that safety.
With modern TV systems turning on from “cold” is time consuming because they are basically computers and often update and load up software so it’s a similar problem to vintage “valve” TVs that literally had to warm up. So leaving on standby is more convenient, but does involve a small amount of cost.
My BIL is a very tight Cornishman and switches the WiFI off. When the DC were younger it was to encourage them to not use gadgets and phones but we knew that it was more about the 0.0001p that it was costing. It also explained why my DSis was so slow at answering What’s App messages.
I tend to unplug everything if we go away but maybe I’m just making it easier for any burglar to take all our electrical stuff. However I never “organize cables, the burglars can untangle the mess if they really want our stuff.

HappyMamma2023 · 31/07/2025 19:44

Turn off at wall. Also the toaster, airfryer etc

Nanatobethatsme46 · 31/07/2025 19:53

Plug everytime, but then everything gets turned off at the plug now ( would turn the fridge freezer off if i could) after my daughter had an electrical fire in the night from a washing machine left plugged in ( but not in use) lost everything and almost their lives had they not woken up :(

Are you sure? Based on current average price 4kwh is around £350 ! 😱
that’s half my electricity bill per year

assuming you’ve got maths wrong, or you have an unusually enormous TV, the actual typical cost is estimated at £3 to £25 per year depending on your tv

however, it’s the accumulative effect of ALL the devices left on standby or with digital displays (ovens, microwaves etc). Makes me mad that manufacturers set up all electronics these days with a default assumption that we want to leave on standby. Whilst one house still ain’t that much, over the entire country we’re talking about precious resources being wasted on blue lights, random clocks, etc that we simply don’t need.

eve nor you could have a time on standby it would be better , turn on in morning, switches off auto at night and saves electriculty over night etc

You clearly need to look at that again. An annual consumption of 4kWh means that it uses less than £1 per year, my TV is very similar.
