Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

TV switched off at the wall overnight. I didn't used to do this, but the wiring and sockets are old in this house as is the tv and the tv power point has a couple of items plugged in on the single power point. Also I heard a fireman once say that quite a lot of fires are started by tv's being not being switched off at the mains when not in use, but this was many years ago, so not sure if this is still true. I will continue to switch off my old tv at the wall until I get my wiring checked and updated.

LakieLady · 30/07/2025 16:23

Standby. If it's unplugged, it goes through a long and tedious start up process.

I wish I'd never bought the fucker, it's pisspoor in bright light. My old one died during the first lockdown, so I had to buy a new one online without seeing it.

CloverPyramid · 30/07/2025 16:25

I had no idea people turned them off at the wall. It would never have occurred to me to do that, even when going on holiday. Ours is just turned off with the remote.

JeremyBearimysTimeKnife · 30/07/2025 16:26

My grandparents always turned theirs off at the wall, I’ve never done so but now I’m questioning whether I should

Myamoth · 30/07/2025 16:30

Standby - we can't get at the socket without moving the whole fireplace etc., so that's not happening every night!

Loads of responses lol! I'll read them later...

I personally always switch off at the wall but it's starting to give me a bad back and I'm wondering if it's really necessary! I switch plugs off almost everywhere other than WiFi and fridge.

Fear of fire is the only reason.

What makes your WiFi and fridge plugs less fire risk?

Standby. There's no way I'm digging down the back of the tv cabinet every night to get to the plug.

I'd have to pull the whole cabinet out, so standby

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 30/07/2025 16:34

Standby. Would have to remove it from the wall to access the plug to unplug it.

Rosscameasdoody · 30/07/2025 16:35

Standby so that it can be switched on via remote or voice control. We have the Sky Glass system and it works entirely off the internet connection, so it’s a pain to reboot if you switch off altogether. Having said that there are some built in energy saving features which are quite good.

AngelicKaty · 30/07/2025 16:36

@SitOnHisFaceIfHeDiesHeDies Standby for us, but as @MyrtleLion has given us an example of, it's accepted wisdom that not leaving electrical items on standby saves you electricity and hence, money.

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 11:24

Standby. The plug is too hard to access easily.

This 😀

isthisevenreallife · 30/07/2025 16:42

Always unplug overnight and when away.

DongDingBell · 30/07/2025 16:43

Neither.
Mine has a button on the front. It gets switched off there every time someone has finished with it.

Dagnabit · 30/07/2025 16:44

We turn ours off with the remote then at the plug when we go to bed.

RobertaFirmino · 30/07/2025 16:50

Off at the wall here. Socket is not difficult to access. Is it not dangerous to have inaccessible sockets in use?

Jerseycreamtea · 30/07/2025 17:11

Standby but turn off at the wall when I’m away

Purplepeopleeaterz · 30/07/2025 17:18

Standby for me, but way back when my parents would unplug it (early 80’s) if we were due a storm overnight ⛈️

I remember mumblings of lightening strikes coming through the socket?

slightlydistrac · 30/07/2025 17:19

We turn it off at the wall when we go to bed and it doesn't go on again until we want to watch tv the next evening. We rarely record anything, so that's not an issue, and walking six feet to switch something on and off isn't exactly taxing, is it?

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 30/07/2025 17:23

Always on standby…

RawBloomers · 30/07/2025 17:23

Standby. Our TVs do a few things while they’re “off”, and we like being able to turn them on a play using voice commands. But could probably use a smart plug to switch them off overnight most of the time without impacting our convenience and save some electricity. Might look into that.

No, but moving the floor to ceiling bookcase that’s in front of the plug socket would be 😂

Gilead · 30/07/2025 17:27

If I leave mine on standby it comes on again at about three in the morning. It’s not a great way to wake up!

MycatLarry · 30/07/2025 17:30

I'm sure my tv instructions said to leave it on standby all the time so it can do updates.
I have another set upstairs which isn't a smart tv so I switch it off at the socket when I'm not watching it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 30/07/2025 17:40

It’s on standby so I can record stuff. I only switch it off if I’m going to be away for ore than a week.

Arran2024 · 30/07/2025 17:49

Off. We unplug everything apart from the fridge!
