Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

with the lounge TV we pull the plug out of the back of the unit as the on/off switch jammed on a few years ago.

the bedroom tv is turned off at the wall, simply because I hate the standby light shining in the night.

my ex’s boss’s house fire was caused by a tv in an entertainment cabinet being left in standby mode. They said it became too hot in the cabinet. 🤷‍♀️

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 31/07/2025 21:40

Probably been said but isn't there usually a switch? Rather than reaching for the plug. We are standby mostly with occasional switch off... but not at the plug; using the switch on the side of the TV.

mamamamamamamamamamachameleon · 31/07/2025 21:44

Off at the wall every night! But I think I'm of the generation whose parents were paranoid about a lightning strike coming down the aerial!

Viobioscore48 · 31/07/2025 21:45

Off. The record box is on another plug and stays on standby but the tv is off and on one of those infrared remote for easy on/off.

Flamingoknees · 31/07/2025 21:52

Remote. However, many years ago, overnight one Christmas Eve, someone broke into the local power station, caused a massive power surge, and all our electricals went bang. (Everyone was out in the street in their nightwear). I suppose TV would have been saved if switched off at socket. It was very inconvenient - I was an early shift and had to take my hairdryer to work. We lost the freezer food etc.
Not a great start to Christmas Day.

xmaswiththeinlaws · 31/07/2025 21:53

Standby, we have so many remote controls I have enough problem working out how to switch the damn thing on in the lounge- its connected up to everything and it doesn't always work when I do switch it on.

Redlightbulb · 31/07/2025 22:07

Mine is always on standby. I will turn it off at the plug on holiday.

LakotaWolf · 31/07/2025 22:08

I live in the US so maybe we have a different “cultural” norm here - do people in the UK actually unplug the TV from the power socket when it’s not in use/overnight?!

I ask because that is something I’ve never seen commonly done here in the States. The only people who unplug their telly on the regular are the type of people who wear “tinfoil hats” and claim that “they” can mind-control you through the electricity that runs through the TV even if it’s powered off.

Some people of older generations also claim that the TV “uses tons of electricity” when plugged in, which is true (well, that they still use some electricity, just not “tons”) but modern appliances are much improved over the devices that the older people would have used in their youth/childhood.

Serious question even though I’m being a bit facetious with my wording - is it common to fully unplug the TV when it’s not in use?

lilkitten · 31/07/2025 22:13

Standby, I used to turn it off but got issues with the apps and was told that some apps do their updates overnight so that could have been a cause.

Yep my parents made us turn them all off in a storm. I got my own house 20 years ago but have never had an aerial, I went straight to Sky and then streaming. I wonder if it's something people still do if they have one?

OldWomanInACardigan · 31/07/2025 22:17

Standby

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 31/07/2025 22:23

The remote rears it head every few months so rarely used. I turn it off at the side with a button but it’s standby. The plug is behind the fireplace at an angle. I’m not getting cramp 2/3 times a day to save tuppence.

SouthernNights59 · 31/07/2025 22:24

I switch it off at the wall overnight, and if I go out (if I remember).

ApplesinmyPocket · 31/07/2025 22:30

Actually suffered a power surge twice in five years - the first was fairly devastating and destroyed two tvs (final) and two computers (rescuable as the hard drives were still ok, just had to be put in a new shell - actually not a work of moments) The elec company were pretty good and replaced everything but it was still a massive shock (sorry!) and a hassle.

The second one, I think only a toaster died.

Off at the wall and unplugged every night for me since then, though I appreciate it's unlikely for lightning to strike THREE times on one household....)

UK plug sockets often have individual switches on them to cut power to that socket directly which is what people are talking about doing, mostly.

Some people do physically unplug things but it's less common.

Electricity is more expensive in the UK compared with the US which might also explain some of the worries people have over things using too much power.

Remote control 🙂

TaborlinTheGreat · 30/07/2025 12:11

I'm a bit baffled that the only two choices you mention are standby and off at the plug, not switching it off on the actual tv itself!

Ours is sometimes switched to standby with the remote and sometimes switched properly off with the button on the tv. It mostly depends on who is switching it off!

It is only ever switched off at the plug when we go away on holiday. The plug is a bit tricky to access.

A lot of TVs don't have an obvious on/off button anymore, neither of ours do, we leave ours on standby as they do updates during the night.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 01/08/2025 07:37

Since most countries don’t have a switch at the wall I wonder what they do?

oldmoaner · 01/08/2025 10:16

Mine used to be left on standby as I couldn't reach the socket but I invested in remote control sockets so now I turn TV off press my remote to turn socket off, fantastic idea really. 4 in a box, one on electric fire socket, one on TV, one on lamp others on CD player sockets.

Extension lead with surge protect and switch. That‘s what we do for telly and peripherals and PC and peripherals. Basically anything sensitive that it’s too much hassle to unplug.

Tbf, a lot of our sockets are quite high up and accessible, so washing machine/tumble drier are unplugged when not in use, as are small kitchen appliances and a 1950s wireless.

You can also buy plug in switches…

AutisticAndMore · 01/08/2025 19:35

I always switch it off fully. I don’t use standby.

Rayqueen · 01/08/2025 20:01

Standby on all of them as couldn't be bothered lol

Hayleyb5425 · 10/02/2026 11:37

Standby .. always
