Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

Stand by with remote. Never unplugged anything like that. Only time it's switched off is if internet is playing up and we switch that socket off (it uses the same socket lol) to reboot the internet.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/07/2025 22:47

Switched off at the wall.
it only gets used if DS is home from uni.

Imisssleep2 · 31/07/2025 09:55

Standby all the time, our plugs are situated behind the TV unit so would be rather awkward to switch off at the plug on a regular basis

CoastalMummy · 31/07/2025 14:06

Only psychopaths turn it off at the wall after every use (and my mother is in that category!). Standby of course!

shellyleppard · 31/07/2025 14:07

Unplug cos I have to pay the electricity bill 😂😂 I'm much more aware now I have my own place. 😂😂

What is wrong with you?

It’s fine for people to do things differently, doesn’t make them fucking psychopaths. How nasty.

Standby

I'm guessing this was a light hearted comment, not really meaning it that people who turned it off at plug were psychopaths!

BananaCaramel · 31/07/2025 14:20

I don’t think I even know where the off button is for my TV - does it even have one? We’ve had it 5 years and have literally only ever used the remote - I haven’t heard anyone say “on standby” for years though so thank you for the blast from the past

LHP118 · 31/07/2025 14:26

Standby

Ours is an 'old' (2006, not 1956 or anything like that 😉) TV. We (OH and I) had a discussion about this. Apparently, older, not Smart, TVs do not do well being repeatedly switched off from the mains.
No, I couldn't find anything to substantiate not to discount his claim 🤷

HevenlyMeS · 31/07/2025 14:32

We try to switch television off altogether's much's possible
Because some time back, we heard it uses 80 percent of electricity, when left on standby 💚🌼💚

Of course it was a light hearted comment... Has British humour been totally lost?! 😂

My word... get a sense of humour. I referenced my mother for Pete's sake. It's clearly a joke.

LoopyLoo1991 · 31/07/2025 16:15

It was always recommended that older TVs with valves be unplugged overnight. With solid state electronics now the normal, this hasn't really been an issue.
The older guy who taught us how to assemble circuit boards in my first job would tell us how much things had changed since he started building devices in the 1970s.
I unplug my TV in my bedroom as I can hear it hum even on standby.

MoonWoman69 · 31/07/2025 17:56

Standby, our TV has no physical off button and I'm not arsing about leaning behind it to get to the plug twice or more a day! 🤣

Cynic17 · 31/07/2025 17:58

Never switch off at the wall, even when on holiday.

CommonAsMucklowe · 31/07/2025 18:06

Standby as the TV doesn't have a manual button. It's standby or the plug in the wall.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 31/07/2025 18:06

Wall every night

onedogatoddlerandababy · 31/07/2025 18:07

Off at the wall. Most things are turned off tbh, lamps downstairs, toaster kettle etc

tv left on standby is a fire risk, according to the tv engineer I knew. This was many years ago so perhaps not relevant these days.
also used to live in the tropics (how old do I sound 😅) as a child where we’d get violent storms, so things were often switched off and unplugged for safety

fetchacloth · 31/07/2025 18:10

I just use the remote and leave it on standby. I don't unplug these devices because of recording programmes.

Jumpers4goalposts · 31/07/2025 18:16

Standby plug is too awkward to get to. If going on holiday off at the wall.

Partickthistle · 31/07/2025 18:17

I've bought a smartplug to sort this out - set a timer on the app to switch off overnight and come back on to standby in the morning and reckon that by 2035 it will have paid for itself😃But my conscience is at least in the clear and it saves stretching around the back of the tv and doing my back in. The recorder is on a separate socket so can still record programmes overnight and we can use the app to switch on if needs be.

brunettemic · 31/07/2025 18:20

turn it off and then I turn the remote controlled plug to turn it off at the wall 😂 sky box always stays on.

2Old2BABPpresenter · 31/07/2025 18:20

Switched Off at the wall at night.

Putneydad7 · 31/07/2025 18:24

After watching, I turn it off and unplug it, put it in a crate and bury it in the back garden. But then I do live in Kabul.
