Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

OP, if your concern is fire, and you don't like bending over to turn all the plugs off, just switch the whole room off at the circuit breaker (fuse box). As long as your TV isn't on the same ring as your fridge (unlikely, kitchens usually have their own ring or two) this will be much less effort and have the same result.

Off at the plug at the end of the day. Our router is on the adjacent socket along with the PVR which remains on so that the internet stays on and recordings can be made. Apparently our Smart TV uses more power than a 100w light bulb in standby mode and we wouldn't leave a light on at night so the TV goes off too.

Zabber · 31/07/2025 20:02

Standby if we're home; unplugged if we go out. DH works in fire safety and is paranoid about it.

LumpySpaceCow · 31/07/2025 20:06

6 TVs in the house....all on standby!

You think your TV is more than 100w in standby? More like one hundredth of that.

Tigergirl80 · 31/07/2025 20:21

If I remember before going to bed I switch off at the sockets. Turn off the WiFi as well helps you sleep better and kitchen sockets apart from fridge freezer. Always turn all sockets off when we go away. You can save average of £100 a year turning electric off at the mains off when not in use.

Peachee · 31/07/2025 20:24

Dare I say it.. I sometimes leave my tv on and let it automatically switch itself off, if I can’t find the remote :)

usedtobeaylis · 31/07/2025 20:29

Standby all the time. The only time it gets switched off at the wall is if I need to reset the router and switch the TV off along with it accidentally.

That's what the user manual says.

Gonners · 31/07/2025 20:34

We are weird and don't have a TV, but computers are powered off at night. They remain plugged in with the wall-switch on, though. I think I'd do the same with a TV.

ScurryHurry · 31/07/2025 20:37

I don't actually know how to turn our main TV off other than with the remote 👀

It's wall mounted and wired into the wall behind it, I'm going to have to go and investigate.

Kjpt140v · 31/07/2025 20:42

Swith it off at the socket and remove the plug. The reasons being: i) it is a fire hazard to leave it on standby. ii) you'll be surprised at the cost of leaving a TV on standby.

Ifigotherewillbedouble · 31/07/2025 20:44

Unplugged at the wall - my dad was a fireman and I’ve drilled this into my DH and children

Wonderfulstuff · 31/07/2025 20:51

Years ago I was told by a sky engineer not to turn off at the wall as it can break the box (he was fixing my broken box at the time). Don't have sky anymore but still don't turn off at the wall.

One of my oldest friends turns every single appliance off at the wall when not using except for the fridge. Microwave, toaster, dishwasher, tv all of it turned off. Personally can't live like that.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 31/07/2025 20:51

I switch off at the plug. I leave the Sky box on to record.

Meadowflower2023 · 31/07/2025 20:56

Never off at the plug as it’s smack in the middle of the tv on the wall behind it so we would never reach it (same on all TVs in the house as I have issues with cables on show so had them done like this when renovating)

BeyondMyWits · 31/07/2025 20:59

Our TV has an on/off power switch on the side of the front edge. So we use that.
(Sky box stays on. broadband box stays on, Works better that way)

lljkk · 31/07/2025 21:14

I dont' have a tv, lol.

I would probably leave it on stand by if I did have one.

Shade17 · 31/07/2025 21:16

PetuniaT · 31/07/2025 20:30

I think you’re mistaken

Airspice · 31/07/2025 21:16

Plug always, but my plugs are easy to get to and also operate a couple of lamps so I just switch off the whole lot.

moderndilemma · 31/07/2025 21:17

Nothing left on standby here, or even plugged in (after a lecture from a fire safety officer). Only thing that stays plugged in and switched on is the fridge / freezer.

MooFroo · 31/07/2025 21:24

SafeAndStranded · 30/07/2025 11:23

Standby. There's no way I'm digging down the back of the tv cabinet every night to get to the plug.

yup! Same

Cucy · 31/07/2025 21:25

Plugs off.

For fire reasons and cost reasons (every little helps).

We don’t really watch that much Tv though, so when it’s off it’s off for quite a long time.

Growing up there was quite a few of us and was regularly on so there wasn’t much point keep turning it off at the plug.

allmymonkeys · 31/07/2025 21:32

Off at the wall. On standby it uses less energy, but it doesn't not use any.

boopthatdog · 31/07/2025 21:33

Depends if I can find the remote or not! If not, it gets turned off at the wall.
Always turned off at the wall/unplugged when on holiday.
