Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

Standby, always.

Notsurewheretostarthere · 30/07/2025 11:38

I don't think I've ever turned it off at the plug unless I'm moving the TV to a different location.

cofffeeee · 30/07/2025 11:39

I dont own a tv.

DancingLions · 30/07/2025 11:40

I always switch off at the plug at night. I was a kid in the 70s and remember scary ads telling you to unplug everything due to fire risks. Haven't been able to shake that my whole adult life! Literally the only things left with the plugs on at night is the fridge freezer and internet router.

Buxusmortus · 30/07/2025 11:41

Switched off at the wall until I put it on in the evening, standby during evening if I'm not watching and then off at the wall when I go to bed.
Decades ago a friend had a fireman boyfriend who said that TVs on standby could cause fires so that's why I turn off at night, even though I know tvs have changed hugely since then.

babybythesea · 30/07/2025 11:44

Never left on stand by.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 30/07/2025 11:44

Standby unless we are going away for a few days.

Loveduppenguin · 30/07/2025 11:46

Everything off at the wall overnight (except the fridge obviously) . During the day it’s hit or miss

DiggingHoles · 30/07/2025 11:56

I don't have a TV. I got my laptop hooked up to a big monitor. I stream and watch DVDs. I hate the fact that TV's spy on you, you can't watch it without ads and you have no control over the software.

So, no, I don't have it on in the background. I do sometimes stream stuff in the background, but I prefer music.

Edited, because I had not read the op properly: Not standby either. I turn it off when I am not using it with a switch at the plug on the wall.

Typicalwave · 30/07/2025 11:57

Standby always

Cutleryclaire · 30/07/2025 11:58

Never been switched off at the plug.

R0ckandHardPlace · 30/07/2025 12:00

On standby. The TV is mounted in a big unit, and the only way to get to the plug is to remove a back panel, and all the books that are in front of it.

limescale · 30/07/2025 12:02

Standby - most of the time
Off at the wall plug - holiday (which that was most of the time!).

PestoHoliday · 30/07/2025 12:03

By Standby, if you mean turned off by the remote rather than the plug, yes, we always use the remote. The button does say Power On Off, not Standby, though.

The plug is inaccessible; I'd have to shift furniture to reach it.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 30/07/2025 12:03

Standby household here. I think it stems back to the 1970s when TVs were massive , with no remote and got red hot and were at a real/perceived risk of setting on fire so the standard was to switch off at the wall/unplug. Mind you if I recall most electrical items apart from the fridge and oven were not routinely left plugged in/notionally in at that period of time.

drspouse · 30/07/2025 12:04

Plug off - we use Google plugs so we can turn it on if DCs are ready for school in time. Initially we got it so they wouldn't go down at 5am and watch TV.Confused

Davros · 30/07/2025 12:05

I think mine’s been on standby for 30 years

Moveoverdarlin · 30/07/2025 12:06

Never turn it off at the wall. All the wires are behind the TV which is mounted on to the wall, not sure you can even access the socket that easily.

SweetFancyMoses · 30/07/2025 12:08

Always on standby.

LardyCakeLover · 30/07/2025 12:10

Standby, because overnight my OLED TV runs a pixel refresher process.

Saggyoldclothbody · 30/07/2025 12:11

Smart plug on a schedule to turn off every night if we haven’t turned it off that way already.

whackamole666 · 30/07/2025 12:11

Wall plug is handy so turn off the TV every night at the wall. Same with my laptop.

TaborlinTheGreat · 30/07/2025 12:11

I'm a bit baffled that the only two choices you mention are standby and off at the plug, not switching it off on the actual tv itself!

Ours is sometimes switched to standby with the remote and sometimes switched properly off with the button on the tv. It mostly depends on who is switching it off!

It is only ever switched off at the plug when we go away on holiday. The plug is a bit tricky to access.

Sweetleftfood · 30/07/2025 12:11

Stand by downstairs and turn it off on the side button on the upsairs one as the remote is playing up, have to use the timer function to turn it off as the turn off button on remote is not working, very annoying

luckylavender · 30/07/2025 12:11

Stand by always
