Eating animals

Bearsaloud · 10/07/2025 18:15

To me killing animals and keeping them the way we do should be illegal. And them queuing up to be killed in an abbatoir and scream on the way in. It's barbaric and medieval in my opinion. Eat something else!

but just because we've done something since the beginning of time, does it mean we cannot change and evolve?

i didn't start a thread. A question popped up saying what I can't believe is still legal and I said the way animals are treated and killed for human consumption. The barbaricness of it. Is that sanctimonious? It just upsets me.

'You do you',' love a good steak' , 'holier than thou' - and 'we don't care'. All your little quotes tell me a lot about who you are.
I don't want to stop you.

you can't stand me, I can't stand you. That's that sorted

Eh?! This is your thread, you started it.

Thanks I am and so are you
the question popped up quickly and was first thing I could think if
it upsets me no end that animals are treated this way.
I love Ricky Gervais' saying. If you like seeing animals suffer, then you're a bit of a c**t!
sums it up for me really
The people that say just off for a burger etc are just pathetic. It doesn't bother me. It's so predictable!

What question? Who asked you a question that led you to post this?

foreverand · 11/07/2025 09:20

That was my whole point. Animals aren’t shopping for and buying their meat in supermarkets, we are. we are not the same.

I'm sure that if animals could go to a supermarket and buy their meat already killed for them and packaged they would. It may come as a shock to you, but way back in the mists of time people weren't buying their meat from one either.

I never said we are exactly the same, but that we eat meat, the same as they do.

You are never going to win this argument and people will still be eating meat a very long time after you and I are both gone.

Stirabout · 11/07/2025 11:24

I’m not aware that animals have the ability to grow their own food. We do. There’s a significant difference between us.

So, if animals had the ability to grow their own food they would become vegetarian/vegan? Okay then .........

ThisTicklishFatball · 11/07/2025 23:01

Vegans and vegetarians support practices that harm the environment while pursuing their goals.
Caring about animal welfare is admirable, but it's worth recognizing that ethical, sustainable meat consumption is possible. For too many people, eating meat fulfills cultural, nutritional, or even medical needs.
Industrial-scale farming does have major problems, but those who value animal welfare often seek out free-range, organic, or local options for this very reason. Equating all meat consumption with cruelty oversimplifies the complex food system and disregards humanity's evolution as omnivores.
Not everyone has the option to "just eat something else" due to health needs, cultural traditions, or financial limitations. Advocating for higher standards in farming and slaughter practices is a constructive approach, rather than condemning all meat-eaters.
Progress and compassion should guide us all, rather than outrage alone.

Loki64 · 11/07/2025 23:27

Should animals not eat other animals too?

Bearsaloud · 12/07/2025 01:50

hamstersarse · 11/07/2025 16:00

This is junk epidemiological science

I don’t even need science to tell me that vegans look universally ill

wow! How do you know by looking at people that they are vegan? Does Ricky Gervais look ill?

I don't condemn all meat eaters. I live with some. I just hate the thought of animals suffering - this is my life point.

You honestly don’t think it’s cruel? That’s mind blowing and quite uneducated! I don’t know where to begin… so I’m not going to. I really don’t care if people eat meat- but at least acknowledge the cruelty involved. If you still don’t get it watch that documentary about factory farming.

@JessicaTookMyLunch ? 🤷🏼‍♀️

It really is uneducated

Haha I really didn't mean to start a thread

it popped up saying what is legal that you think should be illegal

I quickly answered this and opened up a whole can of worms

I dont go mumsnet much so just thought I'd answered a question not started a whole thread

A question popped up on that said what is legal that you're surprised is not illegal and I thought I'd answered this.

Didn't think I'd started a thread !! 🤦🏼‍♀️

obvs riled a few meat eaters who want to tell me how they are polishing off their steaks

Bearsaloud · 12/07/2025 02:09

Just to clarify - I didn't mean to start a thread or debate

i saw a question pop up that said What is legal that you're surprised is not illegal' or something like that and I put this

i was rushing so obvs didn't realise

Anyway had some nice little debates about how awful i am to not want animals to suffer and how people are off to eat their steaks 🥱 Same old boring responses I've heard for about 35 years now

Hence why I would never start a debate or thread like this intentionally

i'm glad some people agree though and been nice talking to you

The others, have a nice day and enjoy your steaks

I'll be sleeping well knowing no
animal has suffered for me 😊😉

If you’ve not eaten meat for 35 years here’s how many animals you’ve saved. You’ll sleep even better now 😊. No. This is from the lifetime meat calculator so it says you have eaten. Ignore as obviously it’s you have saved. The part missing at the bottom is lambs. A total of 210 saved

I'd eat you if there was nothing else, OP.

Luckily for us both, there's two-thirds of a roast chicken in my fridge. The wrapper it came in assured me it lived a happy life 😏 Didn't mention how it died, but I trust it was quick.

I have killed a chicken to eat - only once; I thought I should - and I've watched a calf being slaughtered. It was upsetting. Then I had veal for dinner.

I don't expect anyone's approval. I just expect meat production standards to be maintained and improved.

Bearsaloud · 12/07/2025 03:12

cupfinalchaos · 11/07/2025 21:03

Agree. The whole process should be filmed in some of the less hospitable abattoirs, shown to meat eaters and then let them make an informed decision. But if I had my wish it would be illegal.

Same. I could not bear to watch. I read a book in college library about them screaming and I couldn't get it out of my head. I never ate meat again

I don’t eat meat and I agree with you tbh but I’m not sure what the point of the thread is. This is not going to be the thing that changes someone’s mind!

you have made it sound like it is just the throat slitting that you think is barbaric.

do you have issues with other ways of killing animals? I live in an area that has regular deer culls to control populations it seems wasteful to just let them rot.

I was just giving an example
I don't want to know about your deer culling thanks
