Eating animals

To me killing animals and keeping them the way we do should be illegal. And them queuing up to be killed in an abbatoir and scream on the way in. It's barbaric and medieval in my opinion. Eat something else!

@Bearsaloud and @gloriiaetc
do you honestly think you are going to persuade anyone to give up meat based on this thread?

The clue is in the title why contribute if you can't debate the facts?

They're pretty harmless unless people barge in and spook them.

Watch some clips of slaughterhouses, see how much you enjoy your roast lamb after seeing how terrified they are before being brutally slaughtered and chopped up.

You're still assuming that I don't know.

I am 43 and haven't eaten an animal since I was 11. I just can't be selfish enough to think my tastebuds are enough to warrant the way we breed, 'manufacture', torture and kill beings who have done us no harm.
Taste is just a pleasure. And plenty of non-animal foods taste amazing anyway.

Unless you're very careful a vegan diet is dangerous as it can lack things our bodies need. This is especially true for children who can be damaged. Before modern imports and storage I suspect a vegan diet would have been suicide.

A luxury we can afford because we are relatively wealthy.

Also be aware that your body murders living things all the time. Bacteria, viruses, parasites are ruthlessly killed just so you can carry on living.

Also pests have to be killed to grow your vegan diet. Even worms chopped up when a field is ploughed.

Fortunately none of those living things has a face do it doesn't matter. The only ones we need worry about either have a face or feature in a TV show.

Most vegans and vegetarians do a lot of research before taking the plunge. It is after all a huge commitment. Most are aware it is almost impossible to live without causing some harm to living things. Here’s a couple of screen shots for you but there’s plenty more out there by many independent sources.

Vegan doesn't equal ignorant (stupid). We know we cannot live (nor can most non-primitive animals) without causing harm to other beings. It is meant to be a path of least harm, non-deliberate, as far as is practically possible, not a holier than thou practice where we beat ourselves up if we waft a mosquito or keep a deceased relative's old leather belt. Most vegans are very well informed on the limits as well as nutritionally aware and careful.

It is perfectly possible to have all we need from a vegan diet just as it is perfectly possible to eat meat and be very unhealthy. It interests me how I am often lectured by people who have never considered the health of their own diet until they learn of mine.

Well I’ve got a lovely chicken pie in the oven currently. That chicken would never have lived if we didn’t eat meat. Don’t fool yourself, farmers wouldn’t keep animals if we didn’t eat them bar a few zoo farm places. The sheep local to be are grazing the solar farm currently, then we eat them, it’s a life cycle. I’m quite aware of the abattoir process and still I eat meat. It’s better for me than processed vegan food, and unlike vegan food it contains everything I need

This thread is about animal cruelty, the horrific slaughterhouses and the disconnect that people can coo at the cute piggies and lambs at farms without caring about thow they end up on their plate.
Pork pies and sausages are not worth the suffering that animals endure.
Eat healthily, try a bit of fruit and veg.

It depends doesn’t it?

We make our own sausages and they are excellent. And I make a very good steak pie too.

I know where and how the meat we consume was raised. The animals lived a healthy life outside. They don’t travel far to the abattoir and the abbatoir is well regulated and inspected regularly. We use every possible bit of the animal we can. I don’t see a problem with any of it. Not many people are going to keep sheep and cattle for fun. Are you? If we don’t eat them, all of these breeds will die out.

And as I mentioned before, the life of a previously domesticated animal left to live in the wild is not necessarily that pleasant. Even after several generations of living in the wild, cattle can carry painful injuries, they can be hungry or thirsty at certain times of the year, carry a large parasite burden and be prone to infectious diseases. Their deaths can be lingering or they can be killed by a predator. Why is that animal’s life necessarily better than the life of an animal on a well managed farm?

'Not many people are going to keep sheep and cattle for fun. Are you? If we don’t eat them, all of these breeds will die out.'

So they need to be bred so they can be killed horribly then eaten? I'm happy with the dying out alternative tbh.

If the chicken had never lived then it would never have been slaughtered either. If that chicken had never lived do you think she would be aware of never living ????

Me too Gloria and tbh isn’t that sensible. Amazing how a few meat eaters always mention the fact that farm animals will die out. As if they are saddened by that which is ann odd take!!! it’s only ever the non meat eaters that don’t see a problem

I doubt previously domesticated animals like cows would be set free. Farmers would have the last ones slaughtered. The land then could be put to arable.

It is crazy. They are doing them a favour by eating them! If they didn't eat them they wouldn't be bred Confused.
I wonder if the same applies to obese peope gorging on cakes and chocolate. Well if they didn't eat it the suppliers would be out of business!

Yes, it’s perfectly evident from the title which has been purposefully made more emotive by being phrased as ‘Eating animals’, instead of ‘Eating meat’ that this was only intended to be a thread for negative posts about people eating meat (and also rather bizarrely people who have pets - how very dare they).

Quite. As I said above, I am constantly tripping over analogue TV sets, mangles, cassette tapes and sedan chairs because we just keep producing them don't we, damn that people stopped buying them!

I think a lot of people, or at least all the long term ones I know at the veggie society, haven’t seen animals as ‘meat’ for a long time. So it’s not part of their general vocabulary. If you eat meat you see animals as meat. If you don’t and havent for a long time you see them as animals. Yes, however, I do agree using the term eating animals can be both more upsetting and seen as inflammatory to meat eaters. I tend to switch but only because I have to think purposely to use the word ‘meat’ as the word ‘animals’ comes naturally for me. To a non meat eater they are not meat, they are animals so we use the vocabulary we chose as correct.
