British men in hot weather

gerispringer · 19/06/2025 14:58

Why do ( some) Brits ( men) strip off their tops the moment the sun is out? I don't want to see sunburnt beer bellies, multiple tats and baggy nylon shorts wandering around the supermarket. Men in France and Italy where its much hotter for longer wouldn’ t do this. Smart shorts and a polo shirt much nicer.

Because they do!

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/06/2025 15:02

While I'm not defending sun-burnt beer bellies, smart shorts and a polo shirt make you look like an American Mormon missionary.

WhistleBlower8 · 19/06/2025 15:38

Because they want to.

I don't want to see beer bellies, mens nipples or saggy thighs and arms in summery dresses but people are allowed to wear that they want and feel comfortable in. Just because you find it unattractive doesn't mean you can police other people.

I have stretch marks, wobbly thighs and bingo wings and a belly pouch from having two children. I also have tattoos. Do you think I give a shit what other people think of me? No, I don't. I wear what I want, what I feel comfortable and confident in. I dress for myself, not others.

Move to France/Italy if you dislike it so much.

K0OLA1D · 19/06/2025 15:39

My tattoos are out in full force today!! Braless and sweaty! I wish I could whip off my top!

BrennieGirl · 19/06/2025 15:40

I get you OP. I think it’s a very low class thing to do. I’d be mortified if my DH walked around the streets half naked.

NotVanHelsing · 19/06/2025 15:40

It's ridiculous in the city centres. Prk beach, fine. And I am not even immigrant from posh country and we have better standards🤣

KPPlumbing · 19/06/2025 15:41

Men staggering about topless, severely sunburnt and 5-pints deep, is a vital element of British culture which we must protect. It's as British as cucumber sandwiches.

Eightdayz · 19/06/2025 15:42

Another body shaming thread.

Yawn

mathanxiety · 19/06/2025 15:46

I think it's uncouth.

I live in the US, where summers can be very hot and sticky. Most convenience stores and other places where you can buy chilled beer/ cigarettes/ lottery tickets have notices on their doors saying 'No shirt, no shoes, no service'.

It's understood that you do not try to gain admittance to a supermarket or any other business premises without a shirt and at least flip flops. Wearing clothes and footwear is a basic standard of deportment.

It doesn't have to be smart clothes. Lots of people shop wearing nylon basketball style shorts and tanks, or bike shorts and a tank top, with flip flops or slides on their feet.

Life in the uk test has question about opening times for pubs, so you might not be wrong😂

Whatwouldscullydo · 19/06/2025 16:04

Im sure appearing classy is the top of most of our priorities when its this hot 🤣

As long as their dicks arent out its just something men do isn't it? Like women and girls get out the hot pants and strapless tops.

Dont like it dont look is probably the only thing we can do.

CarpetKnees · 19/06/2025 16:04

I've been to quite a lot of places today - from caff to supermarket, to garage, and a lot of other places besides. I haven't seen any men with their tops off. I have seen a lot of women who clearly didn't look in a mirror before they came out. But, you know, it's a very hot day everywhere today and if people feel a tiny bit cooler in what they choose to wear, that's okay by me.

Daisydiary · 19/06/2025 16:08

If women can’t go about topless, men shouldn’t be allowed to either! The end.

Openthisdoor · 19/06/2025 16:10

British men - are gross!

No, it's not just something most men (or women) do.

People in far hotter countries manage to survive without looking so trashy. The vast majority of British people also manage to survive hot weather without strapless tops or no tops.

It's only done by a certain demographic.

Persephoknee · 19/06/2025 16:15

I can’t abide seeing people over dressed in the heat. It looks stifling and I just think of dripping sweat under there and fungal rashes. I’m all for well ventilated dressing.

What demographic would that be then? You dont know anything about these people or what they do.

Flensburg · 19/06/2025 16:23

Because they don't exist to decorate your world.

gerispringer · 19/06/2025 16:27

Oops I forgot you weren't allowed to comment on anyones looks/ bodies as its “ shaming”. Well some people obviously aren’t shamed otherwise they wouldn't think of getting their flabby torsos out in the street. Its impossible not to see this. Beach ok-ish but not wandering the streets/ shops. I

Im guessing all those defending this are also in favour of those people in cars who drive around blasting their music so the whole street can hear.

I have a very elegant husband who wouldn't dream of taking his top off, and looks lovely in the summer in tailored shorts and a linen shirt.

But I still love how everyone gets a bit lairy on a hot day!

Come on, we're subjected to rain and grey skies for most of the year.

Unclench for 5 minutes!

3678194b · 19/06/2025 16:38

I don't want to see that either. Not just here, I have seen it on other countries too!
