British men in hot weather

gerispringer · 19/06/2025 14:58

Why do ( some) Brits ( men) strip off their tops the moment the sun is out? I don't want to see sunburnt beer bellies, multiple tats and baggy nylon shorts wandering around the supermarket. Men in France and Italy where its much hotter for longer wouldn’ t do this. Smart shorts and a polo shirt much nicer.

British men - are gross!

Really?

BoudiccaRuled · 19/06/2025 16:42

I don't love seeing overweight women in strappy tops, wobbling all over the place either, but nobody's perfect.

Men staggering about topless, severely sunburnt and 5-pints deep, is a vital element of British culture which we must protect. It's as British as cucumber sandwiches.

😀

Really?

Sorry, forgot the ‘in hot weather’ bit - are gross. I have just walked through my local park and can certainly attest to that.

Arraminta · 19/06/2025 16:49

It's very sobering to see how obese and unhealthy so many people are.

If you have the opinion that where it is acceptable for a man to be topless a woman can too, then men should be covering up much more.

Choose different clothing or change it more often.

RightOnTheEdge · 19/06/2025 16:53

I asked a male customer to please put a top on the other day at work and he was really awkward about it.

I explained it was the dress code but I had to get the manager to go speak to him in the end and he was still a pain about it.
I don't know why these types of men think its ok.

I actually don't mind people in cars with windows down and music on though, its only for a minute as they drive past.

frozendaisy · 19/06/2025 16:54

Best way to fight it is to take a fit hotty in without his top.

Anzena · 19/06/2025 17:01

I agree that a bit of decency is good when going into a shop or cafe/petrol station etc. Even a string vest would do! But it's ok in a park/beach etc on a roasting hot day.

But no, it's a defiant thing, and I think they believe they are attracting women by showing off their moobs and hairy chests. Has to be that, but do they realise it results in the opposite 😊

Arraminta · 19/06/2025 17:03

I don't know why these types of men think its ok.

It's the incomprehensible arrogance of your typical, very mediocre, white male.

I agree! But they don’t need to exercise their Total Clothing Rights for it to be apparent. I notice it a lot when people are covered up in hot weather, too.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 19/06/2025 15:02

While I'm not defending sun-burnt beer bellies, smart shorts and a polo shirt make you look like an American Mormon missionary.

Oh dear! My very British DP is definitely a ‘smart shorts & polo shirt” chap when the weather is warm. He even completes the look with deck shoes. Fortunately, I haven’t heard him ask to talk to anyone about Jesus, though.

SarfLondonLad · 19/06/2025 17:43

mathanxiety · 19/06/2025 15:46

I think it's uncouth.

I live in the US, where summers can be very hot and sticky. Most convenience stores and other places where you can buy chilled beer/ cigarettes/ lottery tickets have notices on their doors saying 'No shirt, no shoes, no service'.

It's understood that you do not try to gain admittance to a supermarket or any other business premises without a shirt and at least flip flops. Wearing clothes and footwear is a basic standard of deportment.

It doesn't have to be smart clothes. Lots of people shop wearing nylon basketball style shorts and tanks, or bike shorts and a tank top, with flip flops or slides on their feet.

'No shirt, no shoes, no service'.

Most British pubs (at any rate the decent ones) have the same sign.

DelphiniumBlue · 19/06/2025 17:51

I don't think it's asking too much to expect people ( including men) to cover up their chests in public places. I don't really care if they wear a polo or not, although a cotton shirt would be cooler. I'm not sure a vest is OK either - I don't like seeing peoples pits! I prefer shorts to the 3/4 or 7/8 length trousers which were deemed acceptable about 15/20 years ago.
I can't bear seeing bare feet in shoes, I just think of how uncomfortable and sweaty and sore it must feel! Trainer socks were invented for a reason, for people whose feet aren't nice enough to wear flipflops.
I know I am very opinionated on what I think looks appropriate, I'm not keen on tattoos either, unless they are very arty and the wearer slightly goth-y. One of my favourite things to do when stuck in traffic is to assess passing pedestrians' outfits, especially their footwear, and its appropriateness for what I think will be their day.
But I am one of those people who spends far too long working out what to wear myself, so I really can't say that my view is more valid than anyone else's, only I what I prefer!

WhistleBlower8 · 19/06/2025 15:38

Because they want to.

I don't want to see beer bellies, mens nipples or saggy thighs and arms in summery dresses but people are allowed to wear that they want and feel comfortable in. Just because you find it unattractive doesn't mean you can police other people.

I have stretch marks, wobbly thighs and bingo wings and a belly pouch from having two children. I also have tattoos. Do you think I give a shit what other people think of me? No, I don't. I wear what I want, what I feel comfortable and confident in. I dress for myself, not others.

Move to France/Italy if you dislike it so much.

Yes, but a summer dress is... clothes. It's different, and presumably you want your tattoos to be seen or you wouldn't had them done? Shirtless men in public is an awful lot more flesh (and nipples, like you said) on display.

Bizarre to suggest someone should actually move countries if they want to see more decorum.

Goldenbear · 19/06/2025 17:54

mathanxiety · 19/06/2025 16:12

No, it's not just something most men (or women) do.

People in far hotter countries manage to survive without looking so trashy. The vast majority of British people also manage to survive hot weather without strapless tops or no tops.

It's only done by a certain demographic.

Are you really arguing that Americans are all classy dressers and no strap less tops are ever worn, in fact, did Americans not event the notion of the permanently casual wear.

Goditsmemargaret · 19/06/2025 17:59

My British DH refuses to go running topless. It's very selfish of him. He's 55 years old, pure muscle and beautiful brown skin. But he covers it up.

Selfish plain and simple.

NewGoldFox · 19/06/2025 18:02

I saw a lady with her bum cheeks out on my drive home today. Think high waist jeans with the cut of a pair of Brazilian knickers. 😳

LSTMS30555 · 19/06/2025 18:02

Oh look another British bashing thread.

why do people who hate the British & hate the country not fuck off elsewhere? That’s what I want to know; not asking stupid fucking question like why someone would remove their top on a boiling hot day 🤨

ruethewhirl · 19/06/2025 18:03

BoudiccaRuled · 19/06/2025 16:42

Sounds like you love a bit of fatphobia, though.

Nothankyov · 19/06/2025 18:03

@gerispringer think it depends on the setting. If you’re talking about going around the street and Sainsbury’s for example - I agree. Just like women don’t turn up in bikini tops to the supermarket (at least I dont). But it doesn’t really matter if they are fat or skinny - tattoos or no tattoos. I’m an old soul and I think it lacks decorum. But if they are sunbathing in their garden or the park or whatever then it’s really up to them.

edited to say: that whilst other people don’t do it such as people in France, Italy, Portugal or Spain - I think that’s because in those countries people are used to high temperatures whilst in the UK you’re not as much. And the heat is different. I find the heat less pleasant and sticky in the Uk compared to those other countries.

That reminds me, I once saw a woman cycling through a busy small town in a thong bikini. From behind she looked naked. I don't think it was helping the traffic flow at all...

Wow. What a hideously snobby comment. Whilst I don't like the look, loads of blokes do it around here l and loads of them are decent. You sound horrendous. I know who I would prefer to live near!^^

DrCoconut · 19/06/2025 18:07

When we went to Spain the hotel had a sign up requesting that patrons be fully dressed in the restaurant. It was in English so draw your own conclusions about the issue from that. Fully dressed didn't mean suits btw, just not half naked.
