British men in hot weather

Why do ( some) Brits ( men) strip off their tops the moment the sun is out? I don't want to see sunburnt beer bellies, multiple tats and baggy nylon shorts wandering around the supermarket. Men in France and Italy where its much hotter for longer wouldn’ t do this. Smart shorts and a polo shirt much nicer.

Why would someone who works in the sewers or wears lots of PPE in their job, or has to wear a suit for work or a uniform, or maybe doesn't have a job, want to wear 'smart shorts and polo shirt' to a fucking supermarket?! 🤣

How do you feel about women in tiny shorts and bikini tops?

They don't go into supermarkets like that though, do they? Cover up. No one wants to see it.

I'm just saying if someone has to wear specific uncomfortable clothing for work they are not going to want to dress up for a trip to Aldi.

I'm not mad on topless men visually but it must be nice to be able to walk around topless if you feel like it! I don't really begrudge them. It's because British people in general can't handle hot weather very well. I think.

bombastix · 20/06/2025 13:38

Yes it’s grim - nobody wants to see your tattoos or your tits guys.

Save it for the beach. Or your (un)lucky lady

The only time I find seeing someone else's nipples acceptable is if they're children and therefore sweet and innocent, or a woman feeding her baby. Otherwise keep 'em covered. Urgh. I'm no prude (the stuff I've been up to would make hair curl) but unless it's a beach or a pool where everyone is partially dressed, cover 'em up!

Blokes wouldn't want to see MY elderly saggy nipples/boobs so I defo don't want to see theires.

I'm sure plenty blokes would 😊 do nipples change that much when your elderly?

Are you saying it's fine if they have no tattoos and a rippling six-pack? Or is it just older, fatter, rougher men you don't want to see?

FrippEnos · 20/06/2025 13:52

body shaming, Xenophobia and racism all on one thread.

Keep up the good work.

All this stuff about "they need their tops off it is hot" is ridiculous and doesn't survive light scrutiny. It's perfectly possible to not go topless in any weather for any person. It's only been a recent thing comparatively speaking.

The worst is someone on a packed tube wearing a vest top, holding a hand rail and glistening drops of sweat pouring off their hairy pits. But at least a vest top is better than nothing.

How is it exactly justifiable in any way to say "yeah men can do this but not women"; we're all experiencing the same weather

Edited

I think a man would look pretty silly in a boob tube, strapless top or tiny strappy tops like women are able to wear. And you've just talked very negatively about a man wearing a male vest top. If a man is sweaty fat and hairy you probably wont want to be standing near him on the tube no matter what he is wearing or not wearing.

And yet what’s the first thing British people do when they go on hols? Go somewhere hot and sunny. Like Spain, Greece etc…..

If they were struggling so much with the heat they have to undress, they wouldn’t do that, would they?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/06/2025 16:33

TBH I don’t want to see fat women displaying acres of wobbly flesh either, whether sunburnt or not.
Let’s not pretend it’s just men who don’t exactly look aesthetically pleasing in hot weather.

Fluffywhitecat · 20/06/2025 16:33

gerispringer · 19/06/2025 16:30

Im guessing all those defending this are also in favour of those people in cars who drive around blasting their music so the whole street can hear.

Yes I love both equally.

Big difference between working and going about your daily life in the heat and lying almost naked by a pool relaxing. Not to mention some people love the feeling of walking about in the heat without the restriction of normal clothes.

mathanxiety · 20/06/2025 02:40

No, Im not arguing any such thing.

What I'm saying is that Americans can deal with heat and humidity without indulging in performance toplessness, and those who can't will be denied admittance to a business premises.

Also, there's a difference between casual clothing and strapless tops/ toplessness. Casual clothing is classy more often than not. Strapless tops and shirtlessness are not.

We are anticipating temps of about 100°F here for the next few days, or at least the high 90s. I guarantee I will not see anyone wearing a tube/ strapless top or going shirtless.

But in America nearly every building is air conditioned so you're only ever a few steps away from a nice cool environment. Not the case in the UK. Went to see an American rock singer's gig a couple of days ago, and she commented on our lack of air conditioning - someone in the audience pointed out that we only require it for a handful of days each year so it wasn't very cost effective 😄

They love it but can't handle it. And always love getting drunk during the day so no wonder they all act up come nightfall.

I think it’s vile and dead common unless it is at a beach

put a t shirt on or a vest top on at least

I had to wear PPE at work..out of work in the summer Lacoste polo, shorts, coordinating trainers to go with polo.
Shitty PPE in the week.. something nicer at the weekend oh and a bit of jo Malone pear and freesia fragrance.👍😁

Dont you mean to say terribly common or exceedingly common 😆

That's awesome. I guess you're not fond of the shirtless look? I guess I just don't really care what strangers are wearing. When it's really hot I can barely walk in a straight line! I'm the worst in hot weather.

The delivery bloke today only had on his undone hi vis vest. His boobs (bigger than mine!) were sweaty and nestled up against my parcel.

If the aesthetics of it weren't unpleasant enough, the hygiene aspect was 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

JingsMahBucket · 20/06/2025 23:24

@TheAmusedQuail oh god. I would report him for that, seriously.

Are you trying to say that because of the lack of AC in the UK the heat is so unbearable that the entire population whips off their tops?

Because that is baloney. Look closely and tell me it isn't just a small subsection of yobbish British men parading around shirtless.

They're the same sort of men all those 'no shirt, no shoes, no service' signs on the doors of American gas stations and convenience stores are aimed at.

sparkles02 · 21/06/2025 02:42

I hate it in cafes/pubs/shops/restaurants/wandering the high street but if they’re in a park or at the beach etc then it’s entirely different.

TheWandyDoorholes · 21/06/2025 02:49

I hear ya with the classy shorts but a polo neck? In this weather ? No way
