British men in hot weather

Why do ( some) Brits ( men) strip off their tops the moment the sun is out? I don't want to see sunburnt beer bellies, multiple tats and baggy nylon shorts wandering around the supermarket. Men in France and Italy where its much hotter for longer wouldn’ t do this. Smart shorts and a polo shirt much nicer.

Which supermarket was this, because I don't know any which let men wander around with no shirt on. I was in Aldi today, and no half naked men in there.

I saw one in Tesco today
He was not a pretty sight.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/06/2025 18:50

I used to work in a drs surgery and a lot of men used to come to appointments in summer with no top on.Grim.

Soonenough · 19/06/2025 18:55

Because they are uncouth . And selfish . It's unhygienic too. I would hate to brush next to sweaty skin and the large expanse of flesh on these mostly fat bellied blokes make it a real possibility. But in appropriate areas , even sunbathing in the park I do think it's OK . Even small kids know the difference.

Worst is when they remove their t shirt, tuck into their jeans and swagger down the street, like Rob Roy going into battle.

Yes! You must live in my area

Oatshakenespresso · 19/06/2025 19:04

Don’t ever attend the carnival in Jamaica youl have a heart attack 🤣

MyHouseInThePrairie · 19/06/2025 19:13

I’m sorry but we wouldn’t accept women in a bikini top in a supermarket. Even less so if said women is older than 22yo and is 3 pounds overweight. (The younger, thin women would just be used as ‘eye candy’ instead…..)
I’m not sure why it’s ok for men to wander around topless either.

And I agree with the OP. It’s not body shaming. It’s just that those who do that seem to fit those descriptors….

Greenfields20 · 19/06/2025 18:33

How would that work at swimming pools? Would men have to wear bikini tops or all in one swimsuits too 🤣

Why not? Never quite understood why there’s one rule for men and another for women.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 19/06/2025 19:18

I work in a men’s prison and they are not allowed out of cell without a top on….even on the wings right now where it’s stifling… most are ok with that rule

Men staggering about topless, severely sunburnt and 5-pints deep, is a vital element of British culture which we must protect. It's as British as cucumber sandwiches.

it certainly is!

You think men should wear bikini tops to cover their pecs or moobs? I think most people know why boobs are usually covered. I know its 2025 and everything is getting more and more muddled but we are still a bit away from breasts not being considered a sexual body part.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/06/2025 19:30

@Openthisdoor and it would be much easier to bugger off and leave the UK -if so if many of the aforementioned tats and huge belly grunting Neanderthals hadn’t made it difficult to do so .

socks1107 · 19/06/2025 19:31

have a look at the way some women dress. It’s not just men who get everything out when it’s hot, there’s not that much fabric on a spaghetti top with no bra underneath the dress/top.
I don’t actually care, as long as they aren’t breaking the law or being horrible people what does it matter

I mean, they probably don’t want to see you looking sour-faced and uptight either, but if they can bear their crosses I’m sure you can bear yours.

Seriously, other people aren’t there to look nice for you. I’m pretty sure not everyone finds you aesthetically pleasing at all times either.

IberianBlackout · 19/06/2025 19:34

I suppose they want to live up to the Brits abroad stereotypes.

I agree with you, it’s not a good look given everyone looks sweaty and worryingly red.

There were plenty of women shopping in Lycra booty shorts and bra tops in the city centre where I work yesterday.

While I'm not defending sun-burnt beer bellies, smart shorts and a polo shirt make you look like an American Mormon missionary.

😄

TheTecknician · 19/06/2025 19:47

Man here. I wear chinos and a plain t-shirt in the spring and summer. No variations. Hope this is ok!

Daffodilsarefading · 19/06/2025 19:51

Makes me want to puke. Ffs put a shirt on. You are not on a beach on in the privacy of your own house.
Also, why is it always the mingers who do it? Not that it’s acceptable but if they were stunning, it would take the edge of it.

Messycoo · 19/06/2025 19:52

I think it’s disrespectful unless on beach,in your own garden.
Or swimming. Men used to wear vests under their shirts , warm in winter cooler for summer as it absorbed sweat and doesn’t show bulging bellies and body hair.
There most definitely was a time it was frowned upon.

I think that's pretty much what most men wear except teenagers. I think that ubiquitous look is an advantage for men as anyone can wear it but without it being judged. Women's wear is always open for scrutiny.

Daffodilsarefading · 19/06/2025 19:56

Women wearing skimpy clothing is not the same as going topless.
I don’t wander around Tescos with my tits out, so I really, really don’t want to see some fat, scruffy minging man doing it.
It shouldn’t make any difference what sex you are. Men have sexualised women’s breasts.

FuglyBitch · 19/06/2025 19:57

Because they’re really warm, some people just can’t cope with the hot weather

If you live in a seaside area you are definitely more likely to come across it in the high street and Railway station (returning home after several drinks). I think it looks more out of place in the centre of London than seaside places as at least there is a bit of logic there.

BCBird · 19/06/2025 20:00

In total agreement with you OP. I don't think beach wear should be evident apart from at the beach or around the pool either
