British men in hot weather

Why do ( some) Brits ( men) strip off their tops the moment the sun is out? I don't want to see sunburnt beer bellies, multiple tats and baggy nylon shorts wandering around the supermarket. Men in France and Italy where its much hotter for longer wouldn’ t do this. Smart shorts and a polo shirt much nicer.

I’ve learnt my lesson.

The other day I was cleaning and wearing a pair of crappy shorts and T shirt with my hair in a scrunchy. I then thought f*ck it, I need to go to Tesco, no one is going to see me.

Well, it was like “This Is Your Life” when I got there. People from my new job, friends, people from my hobby. They all looked shocked as I’m normally quite polished and I looked like Waynetta Slob.

Edited

This was me a few weeks back but late evening 10pm ish Was home in pjs and make up off hair tied up in a messy bun with a hair mask in.

Realised no bread or milk for the following day. Quick change into leggings and hoodie on (no bra) crocs and into Tesco.

I met 2 ex boyfriends, a high school teacher and 3 girls I know (all looking glam)

Normally I’m put together even with leggings and a hoodie on, natural make up and hair brushed. Instead I looked like I hadn’t washed my hair in weeks and like I was some homeless person

I hear ya with the classy shorts but a polo neck? In this weather ? No way

I think the poster said polo shirt - a knit short-sleeved shirt usually with a ribbed collar and three or four button placket. The kind of short sleeved shirt golfers often wear.

LightDrizzle · 21/06/2025 03:06

The “cant cope in the heat” argument is bollocks. It’s about getting a tan and or a weird kind of “You got a problem with it???!!!” peacocking. They may well be cooler in a supermarket topless or in the shade in a breeze, but they will actually feel hotter in direct sun on a hot day with skin exposed. When it’s hot here (Southern Europe) I wear loose, natural fibre tops and bottoms and it’s much more comfortable than a strappy top with arms and chest exposed.

I agree it does tend to be a certain type of man who walks down the street topless. It's never a mild mannered sophisticated business man for example. But I dont actually care. If I'm repulsed by a man because he is fat hairy and sweaty it won't matter what he is wearing, and seeing large patches of sweat on clothes is far more repulsive than simply seeing sweat on skin. Plus there are always some hunky fit men topless and I'm happy to see that.

OntheBorder1 · 21/06/2025 08:06

I grew up seeing topless men on hot summer days (not in the UK) and couldn't care less about it.

MNers are so easily offended, it's unreal Confused

@TheAmusedQuail oh god. I would report him for that, seriously.

I know right? Rank.

Oh OK. So hot men can go topless but fat men can't?

No. One rule for all. Women can't. So men shouldn't regardless of size/age/musculature.

TheWandyDoorholes · 21/06/2025 10:18

@LightDrizzle I think you're right about natural fabrics, perhaps they are less costly where you are? It's really hard to buy decent quality but inexpensive natural fabrics clothes here.

For me my medical issues mean I'm at a real risk of overheating and I also am low in Vit D due to a metabolic issue. So I do bare my arms. Inmate showing off my boobs or legs though, I'm a maxi dress/skirt girl so the way!

Loubylie · 21/06/2025 10:24

My dad always followed the 'taps aff' rule on a sunny day. (But not indoors.)
His mum encouraged all her kids to do this ... to prevent rickets I think

No any man can. Where did I say fat men cant? The fat hairy sweaty comment was in response to that being the description of these topless men by a lot of posters who are against it.

There is a reason why women don't go about topless. Just ask any woman.

They should definitely cover up in supermarkets! Urgh - all that sweaty chest hair dropping on fresh fruit and veg 🤢.

Another body shaming thread.

Yawn

Get a grip. It's not body shaming, it's pointing out bad behaviour.

I think a man would look pretty silly in a boob tube, strapless top or tiny strappy tops like women are able to wear. And you've just talked very negatively about a man wearing a male vest top. If a man is sweaty fat and hairy you probably wont want to be standing near him on the tube no matter what he is wearing or not wearing.

They often wear singlets (aka vests) and TBH I really dislike those too. Thank goodness dh sticks to short-sleeved shirts with his shorts.

And do you have a problem with women wearing vest tops? Or is it just men's upper arms and shoulders you dont want to see?

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/06/2025 11:02

I was explaining to my friends who are from overseas that the men that do it are ‘not respectable’.

The point ISN'T that women don't want to go around topless. I'm a woman. I don't want to. The point is that we couldn't even if we wanted to. We'd risk arrest or assault.

SwimSwamSwimSwam · 21/06/2025 11:26

I dont agree with men having their tops off in supermarkets, pubs etc.

I was quite glad that a colleague got told to put his top back on in the office this week. He had been topless outside which just made me laugh as he likes to think he's eye candy.

However, I've just been abroad and all the men had their tops off around the pool and I wasn't repulsed or judging anyone's bodies.

And where am I saying that fat men cant go topless?

Yes and there is a reason for that. I'm not bitter about the fact women have sexual body parts on both the upper and lower half of the body whereas for men it's just lower.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 21/06/2025 11:35

It’s just British culture. You’ll miss it if it goes.

What's wrong with nipples?

Absentmindedsmile · 21/06/2025 11:38

It’s man thing. And it’s not just British. We lived in France and they do it there too. Gross. 😷

tedibear · 21/06/2025 11:38

I just had to try and explain this to my daughter. I mean there is no bloody reason really, keep ur kit on please 🤢

She asked why is that man walking about with no top on. I said well in Glasgow when it gets hot like this it’s called taps aff weather. She’s 5 and was still rather bemused 🤣 maybe the rest of us are just used to it.

Female breasts are only sexual because society says they are. That isn't their function. It's the patriarchy that tells us they're sexual. Because men see them that way. The same men that walk around topless themselves.
