Anyone else appalled and shocked at Dawn French's social media video mocking the reaction to the terror attack in Israel on Oct 6th. What on earth was she thinking ? She comes across as horrible and lacking in any empathy. I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of this war, in Palestine and in Israel.

Possibly because the elected politicians of the Israeli people have made their lives hell for decades upon decade and the occupation has taken much of their dignity. So yes I’m sure many of them did feel sad about hearing of the deaths of innocent Israeli civilians, but they’ve had tens of thousands of their own dead to bury and mourn. I’m not sure expecting them to go and observe vigils for the families of the occupiers is entirely reasonable, presuming the occupiers would have even allowed it.

I think pp was talking about Gazans who tried to stand up to Hamas, not about Israeli civilians.
Also, what exactly are you talking about here:

So yes I’m sure many of them did feel sad about hearing of the deaths of innocent Israeli civilians, but they’ve had tens of thousands of their own dead to bury and mourn.

The deaths of Israeli civilians - are you referring to the people killed on October 7th? Why are you saying Palestinians had tens of thousands of their own dead to mourn when that happened?

Yes. Though I'm maybe not surprised that this person is unaware of that happening; judging by their previous comments I suspect it's not the sort of thing to be covered by the type of news outlets they're frequenting...

TENSsion · 07/06/2025 20:15

What is the end goal for Hamas?

It’s this that I can’t square with anyone who posts that flag on their bios.

You post that flag so what do you expect to happen if Palestine is “freed”?

Pancakeorcrepe · 07/06/2025 20:55

I’ve met her in a professional capacity and was very unimpressed. This doesn’t surprise me.

Firstly I’d be interested to know how many pictures of armed Hamas you’ve seen on TV the past few months. I doubt you’ve seen more than a few if that. Enough to make generalisations? Secondly I’d imagine if they are armed Hamas members, presumably they are in conflict situations, and so yes, it would be normal for an armed force to be prioritised for a meal or two a day. Third even if Hamas members are starving, they would likely be taking pains to disguise this reality from any international media as they’d want to appear as strong even if they aren’t. And also from their own population for the same reason. I mean I could go on but your point is such obvious nonsense I can’t be arsed to waste any more energy on it. “Some people in the city are getting fed, so let’s blame them for the totally inadequate food supply, rather than the occupying force purposely blockading the city and stopping food and medicine getting in!” Blizzare reasoning, utterly bizarre.

Ooops. You might want to delete this! It makes you look like you support a terror organisation. And it makes it seem that you know what you’re talking about…. Which you really really don’t. Embarrassing..

They want to get rid of all the Jews in Israel and give it to the Palestinians. Who really don’t intend to let any Jews stay there, like in Gaza. What other State/Country in the world can you think of that is now judenrein? It’s happened and anyone who shouts From the river to the sea! And Free Palestine is saying that they want a one state solution. One that doesn’t include Jews in it. And in case that’s not clear… it would be possible for Israel and Palestine to be one country. Everyone living where they want with full citizenship. There are 2m Arabs/Palestinians living in Israel with full citizenship and fully part of a blended society, with most of them coexisting. But that’s not what the Gazans want. They want the whole land from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean Sea. Just them. Without the Jews.

Do people who support Palestine know this though?
Do they know they’re literally calling for a holocaust?

Maybe they do. I don’t know. That’s what’s so confusing for Jews and Israelis who witness all this.

They all know it. That's why they support Palestine. It's the acceptable form of antisemitism. Anti-Israel but not Anti-Jew.

No. They think hamas did a bad thing so Israel is starving babies. That's it, the level of understanding from FreePalestine cheerleaders.

Yes. If a Palestinian sells land to a Jewish person they can be executed.

MalcolmTuckersBollockingface · 07/06/2025 21:47

I realise the discussion has moved on but I noticed that this has been reported on BBC online. Lots of whopping and cheering and "you go girl!" type rhetoric. Regardless of where you stand on the current conflict, surely most sane people don't think it's good optics to sneer at a pogrom and the ensuing aftermath. These people all inhabit a strange echo chamber.

ZippyMauveBear · 07/06/2025 21:47

Awful post from an awful woman. Repulsive.

LandRites · 07/06/2025 21:51

I'm genuinely shocked by this ridiculous wibbling about such a long-term and brutal situation from a woman I hoped had a bit more about her.

Idk if this is a result of what a pp called a 'middle-class lefty bubble', although that's a fair description of where many 'creatives' I met in my job (I'm not one) live, or whether DF is just a bit thick.

I've always loved French & Saunders but after reading DF's autobiography I realised JS is very much the writing talent. I hope she stays silent.

I'm tired of entertainers, sports personalities and media luvvies pronouncing via social meeja on complex, serious situations like five-year-olds guessing where babies come from.

I do feel like some people just throw around sound bites (like “it didn’t start on October 7th”), but otherwise have only a hazy idea of what’s going on.
Like someone said upthread, sometimes it’s okay to be on the fence. It’s a very complex conflict, and one can acknowledge the suffering of innocent people without taking sides or parroting propaganda.

Livelovebehappy · 07/06/2025 22:15

The female version of Linekar. Someone so far up their arse they think being a half decent actress/sports commentator makes their opinion relevant to the masses. It doesn’t. Just makes them look like twats. Hamas started something in October 2023 with no end goal. Kidnapping, murdering, torturing, raping innocent people - what was that ever going to achieve? Did they think they’d gain the world’s sympathy? Did they think it would give them leverage with the Israelis in getting back land? Hamas treat the people they claim to represent, the Palestinians, like dirt. Use them as human shields. Intercept aid and take it for themselves, and whatever’s left over they sell to the starving Palestinians at over inflated prices. They execute their own people for small misdemeanours. All this - for what??

Tryonemoretime · 07/06/2025 22:21

In WW2, cities were bombed flat and civilians killed. It's horrible, but it's what happens in war. And, Hamas, you don't start a war and then complain when you start to lose.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 07/06/2025 08:19

It is truly vile and unfortunately represents the majority of media right now. It is cool to be antisemitic and we are seeing influencers gaining popularity for saying things like this.

It wouldn't be socially acceptable (or celebrated) to talk about any other group of people like this and it's a lot of "left wing" people who consider themselves advocates who are doing it.
People who I would typically align with.

The world has been waiting for a chance to be open about their hatred of Jewish people again and here it is. We are heading in a very scary direction when the atrocities of Oct 7th are excused and minimised.

You can care about the Palestinian people AND what happened on Oct 7th, but if you openly talk about having any compassion for the Oct 7th victims then people react in the most outrageous way. I've seen it online and in person.

I know people who have had best friends stop talking to them and colleagues shun them for simply saying "I care about the innocent civilians on both sides".

My experience has been different.

I have seen people really struggle to voice their conflicting feelings the actions of the Israeli Government and Defence force because they fear even asking a questions would get them accused of antisemitism, even when it is clear they are asking about national policy.

It has been completely acceptable to villainise other groups of people because of the actions of an extremists who claim to represent a group of people- ask any Muslim after 9/11 and 7/7.

It is a strong take about “the world waiting for the chance to be open about their hatred for Jewish people”. I would hazard a guess that most non-Jewish people don’t think about Jewish people that often.

It is the same type of people who are behaving aggressively from both sides that give the impression of hate, but actually they are unhinged idiots and their actions and behaviour is not reflective and of the wider population. They are usually the loudest though so I can see how groups that they are targeting get that impression.

What DF said was actually fine- free speech and all that- but the way she said it was poorly thought out. One of the problems with SM is that a lot of celebrities are quite impulsive people and need to “be heard” because their job gives them the impression that they are someone worth listening too.

Gloriia · 08/06/2025 07:52

'What DF said was actually fine- free speech and all that- but the way she said it was poorly thought out'
None of what she said was 'fine'. From the silly voice, the silly face and the actual content. Who says 'NO' repeatedly as if they are telling a small child off?

Yes, I've heard this too from several sources. She clung on tightly to Jennifer Saunders's coat tails.

Still, now she has shown her arse for all thinking people to see.

To the unthinking, well...who cares. They just sing the tune they've been told to sing and until another bandwagon-endorsed by their lords and masters- come along, they will keep on singing it.
