Anyone else appalled and shocked at Dawn French's social media video mocking the reaction to the terror attack in Israel on Oct 6th. What on earth was she thinking ? She comes across as horrible and lacking in any empathy. I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of this war, in Palestine and in Israel.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

It’s not really though. Making excuses for Israeli atrocities against Palestinian civilians has been the default among politicians and the media in the West until very, very recently. And yet when one B list celeb is interpreted as excusing Hamas atrocities the Western media flips out.

Moonlightexpress · 07/06/2025 14:14

SunnyBloom · 07/06/2025 08:15

The whole point is words matter so much. It is not OK to make it sound like Oct 7th was just 'a bad thing'. It was extreme violence by hamas. It was a targeted mass killing and abduction of Jews, including babies and elderly, by a hamas a terrorist group.

The Israeli government is a terrorist group too. Dont white wash the issue. The occupation was there before the oct attack and many children and civilians taken as "prisoners" for years and no one cared about them. That said, there is no justification for what hamas did. There is also no justification for the occupation and the war against the Palestinians at the moment. Both sides of power are vile and disgusting. Its always the civilians who suffer. On both sides. On both sides.

Religious zealots in power both sides. We need a two state solution, but only the US can bring that about and they’re disinclined to do so.

Upsetdsting · 07/06/2025 14:19

Does anyone have a recording of it
she’s taken it down and issued an apology

Jujujudo · 07/06/2025 14:21

anotherside · 07/06/2025 14:07

Well exactly it’s easy for everyone who isn’t involved to pontificate and take the moral high ground. But that’s also why each atrocity must be labelled as such. Neither side gets a free moral pass to murder civilians as a “response” to what the other side did five or fifty years ago. Nobody should be making excuses for either side. Instead they should be pressuring the US (the only actor with the real power and influence) to put the pressure on Israel to accept a two state solution.

To add to that… the Palestinians need to be pressured to oust Hamas and put a moderate democratic government in place. And to release the hostages. And to accept a two state solution. It’s not only on Israel.

Yes it's always Israel's fault isn't it. Why don't Gazans oust the terrorists?? Anyone would think it's because many support them.

People criticising DF for mocking the victims of October 7th doesn’t automatically mean they’re supporting all of Israel’s actions.
To assume that is quite a leap.

somejust · 07/06/2025 14:25

So yes, she used an inappropriate delivery (her regular social media 'skit' style) to convey a message that was always going to be lost in translation. This was an error, for such an experienced performer. A classic example of her medium becoming the message (there's one for all the philosophers)...

She got this wrong, but her apology goes some way to conveying how bleak and helpless people are feeling about it all. (Edited to add her apology). Oh for some reason it doesn't attach!

SunnyBloom · 07/06/2025 14:26

It's good to see she's made an apology.

Calling the Israeli government “terrorists” isn’t helpful. I agree that they need to go, and Netanyahu needs to be in jail. But the Israeli government are not terrorists. Anyway, none of that is important. What matters is that Dawn French mocked, dehumanised and belittled Israelis after they were massacred, raped, kidnapped and burned to death. I don’t care if she believes that they somehow deserved it, or had it coming. Her post is abhorrent, insulting, offensive and ignorant. We ALL want the war to stop. We ALL know there are too many civilian casualties. Israelis protest constantly to remove Netanyahu and despite the horrors of Oct 7, and hundreds of terror attacks, they still want to work on coexistence. A final point on this, anyone who has ever spent time in Israel will know that there already exists incredible coexistence. There are over 2m Arab Israelis living, studying and working alongside Jewish Israelis - the head of emergency medicine in one of Israel’s largest hospitals is a Muslim.
And please don’t all come at me with “evidence” that Israelis want ethnic cleansing etc. Of course there are extremists and idiots who don’t agree with anything I said, who hold appalling beliefs. But they are a minority.
Don’t talk about what you don’t know. That’s what French did, and it just makes you look racist and ignorant.

'She got this wrong, but her apology goes some way to conveying how bleak and helpless people are feeling about it all'

It was up since yesterday. She maybe got scared that M&S might not want her flogging their yule logs this year so took it down. Not until everyone had seen it, then issued a yeah but no but non apology.

What are you talking about. Israel is the historical home of the Jewish people, and their agreed homeland after the horrors of the Holocaust. Israel has the largest Jewish population in the world, and when people want free reign to express their antisemitism they condemn Israel, regardless.

I suggest you watch the Louis Theroux documentary on iPlayer called The Settlers.

What message was she trying to convey? That Palestinian lives are more important than Israelis?

I suggest you watch the Louis Theroux documentary on iPlayer called The Settlers.

Settlers is the name given to Jews who live in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank). If there were no “settlers” living there then the region would be Judenrein. Arabs living within Israel are referred to as citizens, not settlers.

Don't be so crass.
Lives on both sides are important.
There is a long history to this, it didn't start on Oct 7th.

One atrocity does not excuse another and at the moment Netanyahu is committing war crimes in Gaza by limiting aid to innocent victims of the mess created by both sides of the argument.

Jujujudo · 07/06/2025 14:36

nomas · 07/06/2025 12:22

What about the Israelis describing Palestinians as ‘rats’? Did you find that hurtful? Care to date any of the numerous of massacres of Palestinians by the Israelis?

Are you also trying to dehumanise Israelis?
