Anyone else appalled and shocked at Dawn French's social media video mocking the reaction to the terror attack in Israel on Oct 6th. What on earth was she thinking ? She comes across as horrible and lacking in any empathy. I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of this war, in Palestine and in Israel.

She is not mocking Jewish people, you really need to stop equating Israelis with Jews. It’s possible to criticise Israel without bringing in Jewish people into it.

Except for the fact that Israel is a Jewish country. And the only country that seems to be constantly criticised. And also, I’m Jewish and I was incredibly hurt, upset and offended by her post. Are you going to start explaining to me how I’m wrong to feel that way?

Jujujudo · 07/06/2025 14:31

What message was she trying to convey? That Palestinian lives are more important than Israelis?

I think she was trying to convey that the attitude of the leaders is childish - they started it, no they started it.

Usk · 07/06/2025 14:46

I think most people are there with you - it's just some in media circles that seem to want to pick a side - some sort of bubble.

Dappy777 · 07/06/2025 14:47

There is a sort of unspoken agreement that so long as you're left-wing you can say what you like. Jo Brand made a hideous remark about throwing battery acid at conservative politicians. Did she go to prison? Of course not. Yet what she said was almost as bad as Lucy Connolly. Because Brand is a socialist, somehow it's OK. Frankie Boyle is another example. Like so many left-wing people, Boyle is consumed with hatred. He says utterly foul things all the time, but, again, he's left-wing, so he's got a get out of jail free card. The Left is a magnet for bitter, destructive, hate-filled people. The only difference between them and the Right is their target. Because the Left hate middle-class, Daily Mail reading 'little Englanders', their cruelty and spite and viciousness is tolerated.

ColdLittleHeart · 07/06/2025 14:48

She’s right though. Netanyahu’s actions are just as atrocious as what Hamas did. I agree, Hamas are a terrorist organisation that need rooting out of Gaza and military action was justified after the October 7th attacks. However this prolonged attack on innocent citizens who are trapped in a war zone is barbaric. He absolutely needs calling out for it. It needs to stop. BOTH sides must find a way to live in peace with each other or the vicious cycle continues and it’s never the people in power that suffer the real consequences.

Orangesinthebag · 07/06/2025 14:52

Jujujudo · 07/06/2025 14:37

Do you justify what happened on Oct 7?

No of course I didn't.
It was an atrocity and an act of terrorism.

Hamas are despicable and what they did was despicable but to solve the situation the reasons for their despicable act have to be looked at and discussed.
Until this can be done there will never be a resolution to the situation.

Saying there may be a reason for something is NOT the same as condoning it.

nomas · 07/06/2025 12:47

You found it offensive, it doesn’t mean it was offensive.

I have a friend who was kidnapped from his home in Be’eri and taken hostage for 245 days. His wife and 3 daughters were raped and shot infront of him. He saw this tweet by DF and was devastated by it. In a few days there will be an article in Israeli newspapers about it. He is a victim of terror, he hurt no one. He worked his entire life towards peace and invited Gazans into his home.. one of which directed the terrorists there in order to rape his daughters. He is horrified at the dehumanisation of his friends and family, he asked me who she was and why she felt the need to mock innocent victims of terror.
When I explained that it was in response to what is happening now in Gaza, he said that nobody supports that (despite him being held hostage by citizens in Gaza) and that all they want is to live in peace alongside people who don’t spend their lives trying to annihilate Israelis completely.
Feel free to give him a call and explain how he shouldn’t be offended by what she said.

Their reasons? You think they had reasons for doing what they did?
Ok, so by that logic let’s assume that Israel have their reasons for doing what they’re doing.

TENSsion · 07/06/2025 14:56

I can’t imagine what would happen if a country targeted a British music festival in this way and attacked the nearest towns in that manner.
Imagine waving your kids off to Glastonbury and then watching a government sanctioned massacre being unleashed upon them. Their dead, naked bodies paraded as trophies.
What do we think our government would do in response?
What would we want them or respect them to do in response?

I am not going to enter a slanging match with you over this.

I have said before that I don't think that one atrocity excuses another.

Maybe we all need to brush up on our history and understanding of the politics of the region before discussing it further because the history on both sides is long and complicated.

TheNaturalBronde · 07/06/2025 15:00

I think there’s 3 issues here ,

celebrities rarely come across well when speaking off the record about important things and especially about sensitive subjects and are best leaving it well alone, due to the inevitable offence caused.

It’s quite concerning how the British public are more concerned about Dawn French’s ramblings, then one of the worst genocides & and army committing war crimes with absolute impunity we have seen in recent history, the starvation of millions caused by the government & violent settlers…

both can be true at the same time.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking what your friend had to go through ❤️

VeriteAmmalie · 07/06/2025 15:02

Celebs really need to STFU on SM.
Once and for all.

There are now a good 100 at the very least that I will never entertain again, especially bigoted old rock stars (Clapton, Mike Oldfield, Roger Daltrey, Roger Waters, uuuugh). ALL of them reveal deeply misogynistic leanings which go hand in hand with the usual climate and covid denial, mindset etc, etc.

It's as if many of them download a belief system like software as they all tend to hold the exact same views. It's almost laughable.

Yes I know. I had family members who were killed in the holocaust, and I have family members who live in Israel. It’s not a slanging match, it’s a fight to recognise the truth and find solutions.

@ForWittyTealOP I most certainly do not. I mean right wing bloodthirsty nut jobs, and their supporters.

Changedusernameforthis2 · 07/06/2025 15:18

I don't know if it's me being thick , but I don't know why people can't see that BOTH things are wrong

Lavenderfarmcottage · 07/06/2025 15:24

I don’t doubt that the atrocities of October were abhorrent. I think my issue with the whole thing is that it was framed as Israel’s version of September 11 & really pumped up in the media. That would all be fine and well and good but then they’ve commited war crimes & killed children & 40,000 people last time I saw & displaced almost all of the Palestinians, I therefore think it seems contrived to be talking up the tragedy. The reason being that it was used to justify the war against innocent Palestinians. It was Hamas, a terror group arguably who carried out those attacks but it was the Israeli government who justified retaliating with war crimes. That is what is so uncomfortable - listening to a country talk repeatedly about the terror on Israelis but ignore & defend ongoing human rights atrocities and war crimes on Palestinians - it’s essentially racism the way their country deals with death in an entirely different way depending on your ethnicity.

Religious zealots in power both sides. We need a two state solution, but only the US can bring that about and they’re disinclined to do so.

I recommend the 3 part documentary The Road to 7th October for analysis of how the US (pre-Trump) attempted to broker peace in the region and how vehemently it was rejected by all parties.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 07/06/2025 15:28

Some may say, “but does that mean we can’t grieve the terrible act” - yes, I think it does. You can’t wipe out 40,000 people in retaliation and dismember children & starve babies in revenge and reaction & ignore & rationalise & justify those deaths but demand the world be upset for the events of October. The country has been turned into a hell hole but wants to act as though they’re some civilised and safe democracy where people being attacked is shocking. It’s not shocking, that’s the sandpit and the reality of an unsafe country filled with conflict.

Were they actually trying to broker peace ? The ceasefire deal was a ruse to settle the world’s media and make it seem like US wasn’t endorsing war crimes. You can’t broker a peace deal with one hand and send weapons with another.

America haven’t done these things?

Brandnewclaire · 07/06/2025 15:32

Where can I see this?

ZoeCM · 07/06/2025 15:35

M&S really need to drop her. Imagine if, a year and a half after a horrific attack on British people - say, the Manchester Arena bombing - a celebrity had posted a video mocking the victims saying "they did a bad thing to us" in a baby voice. They would instantly lose all of their endorsements, no question. The only reason M&S haven't dropped her yet is that the victims were "forrin".

Well she didn't say enough was enough did she?

She sneered, minimised and gurned and kept saying NO like she was a deranged school teacher.

Edited

Do you agree Israeli soldiers should be locked up if they don't go back a third time?

She said no does she need to say enough for it to be more powerful.

What do you mean by arguably?
