Anyone else appalled and shocked at Dawn French's social media video mocking the reaction to the terror attack in Israel on Oct 6th. What on earth was she thinking ? She comes across as horrible and lacking in any empathy. I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of this war, in Palestine and in Israel.

I was just looking at it on x when it suddenly said it was deleted! It looks like she has deleted it, she totally misjudged people opinions

I said the West should be more restrained because we have so called democracy for what it’s worth. Hamas is classed as a terrorist organisation ,no ?

So what? Have you seen all the videos of all the things Palestinians ever said about Israelis?

Those sources are not even remotely trustworthy. HRW has been criticised for literal decades for reporting based on biases. It has absolutely no credibility in its reporting on Israel/Palestine. (Or on how many sexes there are for that matter.)

The truth is absolutely no-one here has the first clue about the reality of the situation in Palestine at the moment, but we do know that month after month we are lied to about the civilian death toll. We were lied to in a recent channel 4 documentary, with children very closely related to very senior Hamas leader shown as ordinary civilian boys. We were lied to on almost every news station in the world last week with the story about Israel opening fire on civilians at an aid station. We know that even UN only a few weeks ago used the example of women grinding dried pasta to make bread flour as a sign of how desperate the situation is, which makes no fucking sense whatsoever, because by every relevant metric, pasta is a better foodstuff in an emergency situation. So if that's what the UN is holding up as a dire example some serious bullshitting is going on.

Israel isn't completely undeserving of criticism. But after not just the events of October 7th, but the immediate international outcry against Israel - the victim of an extreme atrocity aimed at civilians - before they even finished counting their dead. The way they are reacting isn't actually surprising. If the world actually gave the first shit about Palestinian civilians, an international peace keeping force would have been established through the UN to go into Gaza and root out every last person connected to Hamas. They would have set up a secure border between Israel and Palestine and they would have used the border at Rafah to get food and medical supplies to civilians, or take civilians to safety. Because expecting Israel to allow people who are a high risk of carrying out further attacks on Israeli civilians, travel through Israel is ludicrous.

Everyone wants to criticise Israel's actions without offering any real solutions to the fact that they are surrounded by people who would slaughter them.

Is the No not directed at the people who use those things as a reason to justify extreme violence? So it would be Hamas and the Israeli government who have both used extreme violence and caused untold suffering among civilians. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. Constant attacks in retaliation for the latest bad thing one has done to the other will never lead to peace, so "No" one violent thing does not justify another.

Someone up thread quoted me insisting she was talking about Oct 7 so although I listened multiple times to her video on Instagram I maybe missed that but like I said taken at face value with what I heard all three things she has listed could come from either perspective.

God, her grovelling apology is just as bad.

I’m glad she’s apologised. I expected better from her.

Both sides are led by religious zealots with zero scruples about carrying out mass murder on innocent civilians. And yet the UK government has continued to arm one of them even as it starves children and babies and bombs hospitals with tens of thousands of deaths. I condemn both sides unlike apologists for the corrupt Netanyahu.

I wonder if she would be coming out with this if her daughter, Billie, had been at the music festival on October 7th.

You don’t see. The Israeli people are in no way responsible for the actions of their government. They suffer too; terror attacks, missiles and rockets from several countries, attacks abroad, mourning their hostages, feeling helpless to be able to change anything. They are human beings. It’s absolutely irrelevant what their government are doing, similarly the Russian people, the Syrians, the Turks etc.
There is never any excuse or justification for racism, dehumanising a nation, belittling their deaths, minimising trauma. Never. I don’t care if you believe Israelis and Jews to be the worst people on earth, there is no excuse for this kind of mockery or sarcasm.
After sept 11 there was a huge upsurge in appalling personal attacks on Muslims all over the western world. People justified their racism by stating that the Muslims were silent, or complicit or whatever. That is appalling! How dare any of us sit in judgement of an entire people like that? It is our moral compass that should point us towards empathy and compassion and not only to one side of the argument.

Well exactly it’s easy for everyone who isn’t involved to pontificate and take the moral high ground. But that’s also why each atrocity must be labelled as such. Neither side gets a free moral pass to murder civilians as a “response” to what the other side did five or fifty years ago. Nobody should be making excuses for either side. Instead they should be pressuring the US (the only actor with the real power and influence) to put the pressure on Israel to accept a two state solution.
