Which songs are way better than the originals (in your opinion, of course!)

I LOVE Boys Town Gang version of Can't Take My Eyes (one of my favourite songs) but no one else seems to know it.
The official video is absolutely amazing 🤣
God bless the 80s!

And this.

God, this is going to such a good thread 😄

I have spent about 10-15 years searching for a cover version of Tainted Love, sung by a woman, and with emphasis on the words “I’ll give you all a boy can give you” that makes it clear she’s singing about a lesbian/bi relationship. I think I must have listened to every cover on Apple Music, but no luck yet. Open to suggestions!

Edited

Gloria Jones did a great version

This Flight Tonight by Nazareth - fantastic guitar sound. I knew from the record label it was written by a J Mitchell but it was only when my friend played (tortured me with) Joni Mitchell that the song came on and this reedy weedy voice could be heard. Nothing without Dan's gravelly voice and Manny's guitar!

ShannonBailey · 04/06/2025 07:37

On the subject of Nazareth, Love Hurts.

I was going to go for the same song, but the Beach Boys version!

Also, controversially, Madonna - American Pie...

Just listened to it not a bad cover but i still prefer sia !
But thankyou cos i have just found out that the mama and papas version is NOT the original while searching for the beachboys version 🫣

Don't go to strangers - the Amy Winehouse, Paul Weller version with Jools Holland.
George Michael . The first time ever I saw your face.

WildCherryBlossom · 04/06/2025 09:15

Roberta Flack and the Fugees both did amazing versions of Killing Me Softly.

Skunk Anansie’s cover of You Do Something To Me (Paul Weller) is incredible.

I love Janis Joplin singing Me and Bobby McGee but loads of other singers’ versions are worth listening to as well, particularly Pink!

I love Muse and Nina Simone’s Feeling Good equally. Prefer Dolly’s I Will Always Love You. Prefer most people’s covers of Bob Dylan songs.

that has just reminded me: i saw them a few weeks ago. They didn't play this. Gits.

Machinehead's version of Message in a Bottle. Metal covers are always better than the original imo

first time I’ve seen Machinehead on Mumsnet, will check this out thank you!

’I started a joke’ by Faith No More, shows how versatile Mike Patton is

Lewis capaldis cover of Britney Spears “every time”. It’s utterly spell binding

The Soft Cell version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye is sublime imo, but I do think there is a better version and that's Marc Almond (Soft Cell lead singer) with Jools Holland

Years ago Marc sang Say Hello on Jools show, may well have been on a Hootenanny.
Me & DH still talk about it, one of the best performances ever.

GodDamnVampire · 04/06/2025 12:13

Just listening to EBTG 'I Don't Want To Talk About It' love this, more than Rod's <sorry Rod>

have just been reminded of the rather excellent, not necessarily better, version of Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Greenday) that Marianne Faithfull did.

Talking of Green Day, I do much prefer Glen Campbell's version of Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).

Arran2024 · 04/06/2025 15:42

He is vastly underrated imo. My most favourite singer ever. I have seen him about 15 times. The version I like was on an album but the Hootananny tracks are all on youtube https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=90AlAwrhG28

At his best, Marc Almond is brilliant; but I found his singing in the Hootenanny just gone to be flat in a number of places.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 04/06/2025 16:16

Thea Gilmore's version of When I'm Gone, over the original by Phil Ochs.

Marc Cohn's version of Turn On Your Radio, over the original by Harry Nilsson.

Vic Reeves & The Wonderstuff's version of Dizzy, over Tommy Roe's original.

This has given me the full shower cap. I remember when the Nazareth single came out, (73? 74?) and it’s only 50+ years later I find out that not only was it a cover version, but that Joni Mitchell wrote it? 🤯

(I also spent far too long believing that emoji is someone wearing a shower cap.)
