Which songs are way better than the originals (in your opinion, of course!)

I LOVE Boys Town Gang version of Can't Take My Eyes (one of my favourite songs) but no one else seems to know it.
The official video is absolutely amazing 🤣
God bless the 80s!

Just spreading the love...

No, definitely not that one. The one I remember sounds a bit like a more mature Alex Park (but not her either).

Imelda May, maybe??

Cyndi Lauper- I’m Gonna Be Strong - Originally performed by Gene Pitney. Amazing. Her voice is phenomenal.

Was going to say this, I actually love both versions and they are so different. Her voice is amazing.

KD Lang- Hallelujah. Best version of this by a mile, I believe Leonard Cohen himself said the same.

Pet Shop Boys- Always On My Mind. Sooo good.

Yes @GlitchStitch. Agree. Both versions are great. Cyndi also does a fabulous cover of Prince’s When You Were Mine.

Ruby Tuesday by Melanie as apposed to the Stones version.

ShannonBailey · 03/06/2025 08:27

Not a cover version but Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio.

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/06/2025 08:34

DragonForce (a metal band) did a cover version of My Heart Will Go On.

Completely changes it some a sickly mess to something very upbeat. Plus hearing thousands of metal fans singing along is something different.

Nirvana, the man who sold the world their version on unplugged.
Also leona Lewis, her version of run.

HoppingPavlova · 03/06/2025 08:38

Only cover I can think of better than the original is Sound of Silence - Disturbed.

The one I can think of that equalled the original was The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana.

I love The Stereophonics version of Rod Stewart’s Handbags and Gladrags.

me too, and i’m a huge Rod fan
Have a listen to the 4 part harmony version of “ to where you are” ( Josh Groban) by G4, gives me goosebumps9

I love The Stereophonics version of Rod Stewart’s Handbags and Gladrags.

One of my faves, Rod Stewart once apparently said Kelly Jones sounds more like him than he does Grin
Saw them singing it together once it was unbelievably good!

Not a cover version but Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio.

But swings and roundabouts, because this cover of Coolio's I'll See You When You Get There is head and shoulders above his version - it truly brings tears to my eyes:

I think Prince is rather like Bob Dylan in that his skills very much lay in writing the songs!

ShannonBailey · 03/06/2025 12:19

@IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta , I don't understand why you say 'swings and roundabouts', it seems very dismissive.

Sia - California Dreaming

I heard it for the first time at a dinner party a couple of weeks ago and my ears were bleeding. It's horrible. Baffling that anyone thinks it's better than the original.

Baffling that anyone convinced that guy he could sing 😆

Are you kidding? Have you seen Prince perform??

the sound of silence - disturbeds version. Beautiful and haunting

Florence and the Machine: You got the Love. Much better than Candi Staton.
Who Knows Where the Time Goes - Judy Collins

BoilingHotand50something · 03/06/2025 12:50

Checking in - have a few to add later.

squashyhat · 03/06/2025 13:09

It's not a direct cover but Fatboy Slim's "Praise You" is based on Camille Yarbrough's 'Take Yo' Praise' which is a classic gospel song.

TheOnlyWayisGerard · 03/06/2025 13:24

Wonderful tonight - Damage
Like a prayer - Miley Cyrus.

Also love Hurt by Johnny Cash, originally Nine Inch Nails.

Placebo cover of Running Up That Hill, originally Kate Bush is fantastic, worth a listen.

Placebos version is stunning, really haunting.

Falling in Reverse covering Last Resort by Papa Roach never really heard the lyrics till i heard this version.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/06/2025 13:47

Wonderwall and Party Like it's 1999 by Mike Flowers Pops Grin

Re-doing them as 60s easy listening was actually genius!

I'm not generally a metal head, but do tend to like a metal cover, including Sound of Silence. Metal tends to add depth and avoid kareoke copy-cat territory.

Generally changing genre is the key to a sucessful cover.

Tears for Fears loved the Gary Jules Mad World. When they were asked to do a cover for a session they re-did Mad World Gary Jules style.

idrinkandiknowthings · 03/06/2025 13:56

Eleanor Rigby - Godhead
Feeling Good - Muse
Another vote for Sound of Silence - Disturbed. What a voice!

Loads of others will occur to me as soon I as post.

HoppingPavlova · 03/06/2025 15:02

Absolutely, his voice is amazing. I read somewhere that’s it’s the only song (as in popular song, not a vocal training one), that has the singer use every single note. No idea if actually true but he does have amazing range and that adds so much to it.
