Which songs are way better than the originals (in your opinion, of course!)

I LOVE Boys Town Gang version of Can't Take My Eyes (one of my favourite songs) but no one else seems to know it.
The official video is absolutely amazing 🤣
God bless the 80s!

Just spreading the love...

And this.

God, this is going to such a good thread 😄

I have spent about 10-15 years searching for a cover version of Tainted Love, sung by a woman, and with emphasis on the words “I’ll give you all a boy can give you” that makes it clear she’s singing about a lesbian/bi relationship. I think I must have listened to every cover on Apple Music, but no luck yet. Open to suggestions!

Edited

The original was by a woman, wasn't it: Gloria Jones?

Not sure if her emphasis is what you're after, though?!

Also love Hurt by Johnny Cash, originally Nine Inch Nails.

Placebo cover of Running Up That Hill, originally Kate Bush is fantastic, worth a listen.

EVERYTHING by Placebo is worth a listen... 💕

Amy MacDonald's version of Dougie MacLean's Caledonia. Originally appeared as a hidden track at the end one of her hit albums - criminal!!

John Cale's version of Hallelujah over all of the others (yes, even Jeff Buckley) - I await the angry pitchforks!

Word Up by Gun vs Cameo.
Feeling Good by Muse vs Nina Simone. Yes, heresy. I know.

Feeling Good - Muse is so goddamn sexy. Not heresy in the slightest!

Cyndi Lauper- I’m Gonna Be Strong - Originally performed by Gene Pitney. Amazing. Her voice is phenomenal.
Controversial, but slightly prefer Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb.
The Futureheads do a good cover of Hounds of Love, but nowhere near as wonderful as the original.

No, definitely not that one. The one I remember sounds a bit like a more mature Alex Park (but not her either).

jellybeanlover2 · 02/06/2025 22:58

Sacrifice - Sinead O’Connor

GlitchStitch · 02/06/2025 22:58

Cyndi Lauper- I’m Gonna Be Strong - Originally performed by Gene Pitney. Amazing. Her voice is phenomenal.

Was going to say this, I actually love both versions and they are so different. Her voice is amazing.

KD Lang- Hallelujah. Best version of this by a mile, I believe Leonard Cohen himself said the same.

Pet Shop Boys- Always On My Mind. Sooo good.

SmokyWood · 02/06/2025 23:05

Love the Killers doing Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet - the original is great but Brandon Flowers voice and delivery just has the edge.

Crucible · 02/06/2025 23:07

Caravan of Love by Housemartins. Better than the Isley version.

Crucible · 02/06/2025 23:11

Oh and Beats International Dub be good to me which is pretty much Just be Good to me with a load of Norman Cook chucked in the mix. Love that song

RebeccaDecember · 02/06/2025 23:13

Agree Pet Shop Boys - Always on my mind.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Wouldn’t say it’s better necessarily as I love White Stripes, but I do have a fondness for Joss Stone’s version of Fell In Love with a Girl..

Also used to love Ryan Adams version of Wonderwall but since it all came out what a prick he is, I’ve not listened to it…

TeenLifeMum · 02/06/2025 23:15

Anything Kelly Clarkson sings!

Denimrules · 02/06/2025 23:17

Adele - Make You Feel My Love
Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats
The original of the latter recommended to me as good but I really didn't like it.

Gingercar · 02/06/2025 23:17

I really don’t understand why people like the Disturbed version of Sound of Silence. I found it on YouTube after one of these threads and was completely underwhelmed.

HelenDenver · 02/06/2025 23:18

@IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta my fave cover is the Hallelujah by Kathryn Williams

Enjoy the Silence - Tori Amos (was Depeche Mode)
Mad World - Adam Lambert (Tears for Fears)
Confide in Me - Nerina Pallot (was Kylie)
Everybody’s Talkin’ - The Beautiful South (was Harry Nilsson)

Who Knows Where The Time Goes by David Gray over Sandy Denny's version.

I love the original and DG's is pretty good but it then made me watch Richard Thompson's version which is beautiful. But even he says it's Sandy's song and I agree.

grizzlyoldbear · 02/06/2025 23:22

Röyksopp covered Ice Machine originally Depeche Mode and I prefer their version. Same with Because the Night. I always thought it was a Patti Smith song, turns out Springsteen wrote it. But her version has so much more raw emotion and grit.

Denimrules · 02/06/2025 23:24

The Placebo version of 20th Century Boy is very good. The original is iconic, but the ending Placebo give it is very neat

GodDamnVampire · 02/06/2025 21:23

Also, I have never heard this version played on any of the stations I normally listen to, but will give Heart 70s a whirl now that I know they play gems such as this! (Still wrong decade though 😝)

@MissJoGrant your comment made me snort out loud!

Ah DD informed me she switched it to heart 80s. Did think it was strange!

sparklychair · 03/06/2025 00:07

Physical - Nine Inch Nails (was Adam and the Ants)
Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails (was Joy Division)
Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit (was The Who)
Amazing Grace - The Great Awakening (hymn by John Newton)

Rocketquine · 03/06/2025 00:17

Joe Cocker With a Little Help From My Friends

Nope! Dire Straits all the way

I heard it for the first time at a dinner party a couple of weeks ago and my ears were bleeding. It's horrible. Baffling that anyone thinks it's better than the original.

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 03/06/2025 02:58

Cissy Houston..I don't know what to do with myself is better than Dusty Springfields version.
