Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

Not lying about committing a criminal act and not trying to blame someone else is quite a low bar though.
Maybe OP is just a human being who made a mistake but I don't think she should be praised for what should just be pretty standard

RainbowAndArrow · 03/06/2025 19:26

I don't think she is being praised though? She's just being defended against people who seem to want to have a pop at her for made up reasons.

'i did x. I'll pleased guilty. Does anyone know what night happen to me? I'm worried.'

'u sound very entitled'.

In MN world you seem to have to accept any and all criticism thrown your way if you admit any wrong doing

It’s posts like this that ensured OP was never coming back to the thread. She last posted three days ago. You’re shouting the answer to a question she never asked into the void.

Well said.

Yep, if you can go to prison for non payment of fine then why not for recklessly endangering the lives of innocent pedestrians, other road users and your passengers ?
This was not an emergency dash to a hospital or the like it was for her HOLIDAY .

Ridiculous. Half the motorists l encounter on the motorway every single day are well exceeding the speed limit - at least 80mph and more. The prisons would be overflowing.

She wasn't on the motorway.

Hopefully you won’t lose your licence but I reckon you’ll get more than 3 points

She deserves to lose her license!!
Selfish people should not be allowed on the roads!!!

No!
im sorry but driving at that speed they deserve to lose their license or even lock em up!!
its so dangerous and it’s putting others at risk
No doubt there were kids in the car!

RainbowAndArrow · 04/06/2025 16:44

U realise she left the thread days ago after the baying for blood crowd had a field day with her?

Why would someone go to jail for a single offence where no one was hurt? How would that work?

eastegg · 04/06/2025 17:16

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 04/06/2025 15:14

She wasn't on the motorway.

No, but you think 87 in a 70 deserves prison. The speed limit on the motorway is generally 70. Ross’s point is that all those doing 87 on the motorway would, under your idea, also go to prison. So
prisons Would be overflowing. That was the point they were making.

Nobody said she was - the point of the post flew right over your head…

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:48

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

Not horrible- it’s the truth!

Rosscameasdoody · 06/06/2025 12:41

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 04/06/2025 15:14

She wasn't on the motorway.

I didn’t say she was. She was on a road with a comparable speed limit - 70mph. I commute on a motorway and similar dual carriageway A roads, and generally travel at around 70mph for most of the journey. Judging by the amount of traffic flashing past me at high speeds it’s very common. I’m not saying it’s right, but at the end of the day you’re suggesting making it punishable by prison, when there isn’t the facility, or the will to do so.

Rosscameasdoody · 06/06/2025 13:14

Allseeingallknowing · 04/06/2025 17:41

Not horrible- it’s the truth!

Nope. Suggested that all A roads are 60mph, which is not the case. You only have to get on the motorway or even a dual carriageway with a 70mph limit, to realise that this happens all day every day. So quite why OP is coming in for such vitriol is beyond me - especially when she’s said multiple times she’s sorry and has learned her lesson. I don’t believe for one second that all those putting in the boot have never driven over the speed limit.

So how would that work ? Putting drivers in prison for simply driving at speed when no accident has taken place and no one has been hurt ? How many extra prisons do you think would need to be built to house them all, or is it just OP you want locked up or suspended ?

Perhaps the suggestion is to include a ‘selfishness assessment’ in the standard driving test ?

I would not put them in prison. I would have a very long if not lifetime ban for excessive speeding, and consider stopping them going abroad for a period so they could not speed there either.

Maybe if she were doing 40/50mph more. As it stands it’s barely an endorsable speeding offence.

Well in my opinion a prison sentence would be appropriate.
You weren't just stupid, you were reckless and all for the sake of your holiday.
Maybe sitting in a room with loved ones who have lost their beloved partner's, children, parents etc to people who use their vehicles as lethal weapons and hear how their lives have been ruined might make you think.

For driving 87 mph? People overtake me at clearly over 80 and higher every day. You can safely drive 120 mph + if trained to do so. The issue is that folks in the UK won't expect you to be so fast. 80-90mph is nothing unusual in the UK, although naughty. Just seriously.

CaptainFuture · 31/05/2025 20:53

Horrible? For not being aw bless poor you, for going 27 miles over the limit?!

So, obviously, math is not your strong suit. Are there any Y2s or Y3s in your house or life who can do the math figuring for you? I hope you get help if you ever need to balance a checkbook. LOL!

I just lovelovelovelove when a mouth frother gets all frothed up and then spectacularly shows themselves to be wrongwrongwrongwrongwrong. Maybe you should froth at your math teacher.

It isn't naughty. It's illegal. Just because people do it does not make it legal. It is attitudes like this - it doesn't matter, it's not all that important - that are the cause of accidents. Tell my next door neighbout that it's "just naughty" - her sister and brother-in-law are in ICU right now after a "naughty" motorist drove them off the road.

You’ve gone from never usually speeding to nearly 30mph over the limit to make a check in? Did you not think to just contact the owner/manager and explain you were running late? I live rurally and sometimes have to cross A roads on foot, and cycle/walk along them to join off road paths, my daughter is getting to an age that she’ll be doing so on her own too. My friend and her children live at a junction with one. Thank god we’ve never come across a driver as selfish as you. I hope you do lose your license.

Guessing you have never gone over the speed limit ever? By the sounds of it you must be a perfect driver.
