Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

What was the limit? 60?

springintoaction321 · 31/05/2025 20:43

No. You'll probably get some points on your license though

Oh really, I hope so as it’s a prosecution letter.

My husband was caught doing 37 in a 30 and got points and a speed awareness course.

Is it because I was so much over the limit?

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

Hummusanddipdip · 31/05/2025 20:47

3 points and £100 fine is usual standard issue at that speed.

sparrowflewdown · 31/05/2025 20:47

Was it a dual carriageway?

Tripadvisor101 · 31/05/2025 20:47

87 is ridiculously fast. Make sure this is a wake up call to never do it again. You could have lost control of the car and killed someone or someone else could have been driving badly and you'd have far less time to react to an issue at that speed. Slam. Dead.

Some A roads are 70. Dual carriageways.

Was it abroad?

Definitely 70 on a dual carriageway a road.

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

You’ve gone from never usually speeding to nearly 30mph over the limit to make a check in? Did you not think to just contact the owner/manager and explain you were running late? I live rurally and sometimes have to cross A roads on foot, and cycle/walk along them to join off road paths, my daughter is getting to an age that she’ll be doing so on her own too. My friend and her children live at a junction with one. Thank god we’ve never come across a driver as selfish as you. I hope you do lose your license.

Some A roads are dual carriageway so they're 70. They're not 87 though.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 31/05/2025 20:49

Hopefully you won’t lose your licence but I reckon you’ll get more than 3 points

Yes I know it was unbelievably stupid.

the road was empty and we’d been caught for hours earlier in the journey and our accommodation said we couldn’t check in after 7. It was 6.20.

I know this is no excuse

They weren't horrible. The reason you think they were is because you did something wrong and are panicking.

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/05/2025 20:50

You’ll probably just get 3 points and a fine but it varies between police forces. There’s a possibility that you might get a court summons and a much bigger fine (based on your income) and/or 4-6 points and worse case scenario, a driving ban. It will depend on the police force, your driving history, etc.

Viviennemary · 31/05/2025 20:50

87 mph is pretty fast. But I expect it will just be points and a fine.

You hope I lose my licence? Is that really necessary of you?

Better to lose the accomodation for the night then to lose a life. Absolutely shit excuse and it is just an excuse.

We all make mistakes and do momentary stupid things..It's human. Just learn from it and move forward a bit wiser.
