Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

Not horrible at all @Speeding87stupid Accurate but unpalatable for you.

Own your mistake. Stop making excuses. Never do it again. Being snarky on here just makes you look massively entitled.

Honestly can't believe the number of apologists for the op on this thread!!

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/05/2025 20:54

Its scary how many people (not just the OP) who don't know the NSL for different types of roads. Doesn't matter if its A or B or motorway... all dual carriageways are 70 unless a lower limit is posted...

OP... probably points and a fine. Its likely to fast for a speed awareness course.

Horrible? For not being aw bless poor you, for going 27 miles over the limit?!

You need to work on your math's, 87-70 is only 17mph not 27.

TheaBrandt1 · 31/05/2025 20:56

Ask around and find a solicitor who specialises in this and employ them and follow their advice

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/05/2025 20:56

https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/rs/road-safety/speeding/if-youve-received-a-speed-camera-activation-letter-or-notice/

Looks like either a fine and 3 points or a court summons (which will mean a larger fine and 3-6 points). 87 mph in a 70 exceeds the limit for a speed awareness course.

Ruggerlass · 31/05/2025 20:56

CaptBirdsEar · 31/05/2025 20:52

No they’re not - some are 20, some 30, some 40 etc

motorways are 70

duel carriageways are A roads and are 70 unless signs say otherwise. Traditional very well. OP has said it was a 70 limit

MidoriNoRingo · 31/05/2025 20:56

Points and a fine. No biggie. I wouldn’t say 87 is a completely ridiculous speed. I drive on A roads and motorway everyday for work and people are usually doing around this sort of speed.

Depends on whether there is a central reservation barrier or a dividing line. It’s 60mph max if there isn’t one.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 31/05/2025 20:57

That is a very high %
so it wasn't like doing 33 in a 30 mile limit

87 in a 70

Speed kills.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 31/05/2025 20:57

Tripadvisor101 · 31/05/2025 20:47

87 is ridiculously fast. Make sure this is a wake up call to never do it again. You could have lost control of the car and killed someone or someone else could have been driving badly and you'd have far less time to react to an issue at that speed. Slam. Dead.

I don't think you need to be this nasty.
A747 could have landed on the roof of her car, it didn't.
She could have won the lottery tonight, she didn't.
She'll pay the fine and get the point or do a course.

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

You should try the A19. It fucks with your head. Is it 50, is it 70. Who knows...

Sorry OP, that's more than a smite. It's tempting when the roads are clear I get it. Im often on the roads when they're gloriously quiet, you have to be even more aware of surprises. I'd say it can be more dangerous than a busy road sometimes. You'll probably get a steep fine and a chunk of points.

Ah so it's just a whoopsie then.. only 17 mph over the limit. How dreadful and awful that people are saying this isn't OK.
And my shitty maths are more of an issue than the speeding... have a reality check with your pompousness!

That doesn't make it right.

TheaBrandt1 · 31/05/2025 20:59

It can be a “biggie” if you are significantly over the speed limit. A friend did this and our other friend who is a criminal solicitor got a colleague of hers to assist. It went to court.

DappledThings · 31/05/2025 21:00

Love these threads for the sheer hilarity of so many posters insisting they know the speed limit of a road they've never been on just because it's an A road. Always said with such confidence too. And usually misunderstanding the difference between a dual carriageway and a road that has multiple lanes.

It's not nasty to say she could have killed herself or someone else. If speed didn't kill there wouldn't need to be speed limits at all would there? Speed does kill and it's not nasty to point that out.

TheaBrandt1 · 31/05/2025 21:02

You need proper advice op not clueless randoms. Do you know a solicitor personally who could advise you who to instruct?

Poshjock · 31/05/2025 21:02

Have a read of your letter. If you were caught by a speed camera and within the limit that would meet criteria for a fixed penalty, you are usually offered this in the first letter. It will ask you to identify the driver and accept (or not) the fixed penalty offer (points and fine). If it is only asking to identify the driver then it may be a court summons. You were going to far above the limit to be considered for Speed Awareness.

If you do get a court summons, seek counsel. And one who specialises in traffic offences. It is actually quite shocking what a good lawyer can do for you.

A roads dont have a set limit, are you confusing this for something else?

OP you wont get the chance of a speed awareness course so you'll take the points and pay the fine.

MikeRafone · 31/05/2025 21:03

3 points and a £100 fine

You find people going 17 miles over the speed limit hilarious because of lack of knowledge of speed limits of all UK roads?

Blackbirdsingssongs · 31/05/2025 21:03

Thats about 25% over speed limit. Can’t see it being speed awareness course.
Your speedo was probably 90 miles an hour.
Maybe take your points and possible fine and learn from it.
