Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

17 mph over is likely to be 3 points and a fine. Usually 25mph+ over is court. So on a 70mph, you should be fine, with points

Sometimessmiling · 02/06/2025 17:54

Your insurance is going to rise very steeply.

grownuplefthome · 02/06/2025 17:55

You may very well loose your license, you might try to claim extenuating circumstances but you need a really good one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

It’s easily done, I’m sure you will learn from it.

You will either get an SP30 offence code, meaning 3 points and a £100 fine, or be offered a speed awareness course, provided that there was nothing dangerous/dodgy about your driving and that you don’t have recent speeding convictions.

If you get offered the latter, grab it with both hands!

Sometimessmiling · 02/06/2025 17:59

You could have killed my family because you wanted to check in quickly. Hope you get maximum. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and admit you are a moron

She won't lose her licence, it's not in that realm. Also, no, you can NEVER claim any extenuating circumstances for speeding. It's a strict liability offence.

Honestly, why do so few people know how this works?

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

Not if they are dual carriageway. Then it’s 70. If it’s single carriageway it’s 60.

Renamedyetagain · 02/06/2025 18:08

Selfish, stupid behaviour. Stop accusing people of being "horrible". What's horrible, worrying and stressful is knowing people like you are completely disregarding road safety.

wishfulthinking93 · 02/06/2025 18:12

86 is usually the cut off for speed awareness courses so you will likely get 3 points and a fine. You’re lucky it was a 70 and not a 60 dual carriage way as it would have been instant court summons.

MustWeDoThis · 02/06/2025 18:14

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:48

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

Stop throwing a pity party and face up to the consequences of your selfish behaviour. It's because of people like you that parents are grieving for their dead children.

Nobody is going to give you any sympathy, so stop pathetically looking for any.

GlitteryRainbow · 02/06/2025 18:05

Not if they are dual carriageway. Then it’s 70. If it’s single carriageway it’s 60.

A roads can be 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70. Only 70 if a dual carriageway and national speed limit applied. 60 if single and NSL.
Other speeds would be sign posted.

Motorways are dual carriageways, by the way, just with special extra rules, and no roundabouts/direct junctions.

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:50

You hope I lose my licence? Is that really necessary of you?

As someone who lives in a village where the only way out of it is on to an A road, I hope you do lose your licence!!
We see so many accidents along said A road and the majority is because people driving at excessive speed.
You are only sorry you got caught and you certainly didn’t have anyones lives in the back of your mind.
Yesterday a man in his 70’s died along the A road outside our village due to him speeding, luckily the other driver was unhurt but that’s still a family grieving a loved one.
My daughters friend from school was left with brain damage due to someone speeding and all they were doing was innocently going swimming.
So I agree with this commenter, you do need to lose your licence to learn your lesson and I don’t give a damn if you was running late or not there are such things as mobile phones and I am sure you have one.

You could read the thread, some people have been sympathetic. But, either way, it's a daft thing to be nasty to someone about - most people speed at some point. I'm not saying it's OK, but people definitely do it! You can't be nasty to everyone.

exaltedwombat · 02/06/2025 18:25

Now, stop panicking, everyone! Read this:

RAC speeding information.

You broke a rule. You weren't massively reckless. 87 in a 70 limit is Band 1. The worst will be a fine and 3 points. You might even get away with a Speed Awareness Course. And.....relax.

Isinglass20 · 02/06/2025 18:32

I used to live rurally. It was shocking how many farmers sons lost their lives racing round roads with which they were familiar.

Most A roads in Cheshire are 30 mph and on some parts 40 and you need to look out for the changes.

70 on dual carriageway stretches.

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:45

Oh really, I hope so as it’s a prosecution letter.

My husband was caught doing 37 in a 30 and got points and a speed awareness course.

Is it because I was so much over the limit?

It might depend on what they charge you with. If it is speeding, you are lucky. It could be careless driving, reckless driving, driving without due care and attention.

They ask you to confirm it was you driving and other details you send it in then they'll send you your options depending on them could be a speed awarness course and £100 or points and fine

I use this road regularly. I've been caught out twice, first time I was driving along chatting with my passenger on the malton bypass and realised id crept up to over 80! I let off the accelerator to let it slow down steadily but didn't realise there was a police car on one of the bridges. I got caught at 81 and got 3 points and the standard fine.
The following time we were heading to York hospital as we'd been told my father was dying, I was trying not to speed but I got caught at 79 at the bottom of Whitwell hill - its their favourite place to sit and anyone who lives locally knows to keep braking and expect them to be there at the bottom! Their other fave spot is on a big grassy corner near the Tadcaster junction.
The second time I explained the circumstances and they didn't give me any points or fine which I was grateful for as it was a difficult enough time.
Im not sure what the standard fine is for 87 on a dual carriageway, I believe it gets mo, re serious for doing over 90, as you're under this it will hopefully just be 3 points but they've changed how they do the fines now, it could be £100 but it might be more (mine was £100 but it was nearly 7 years ago)

Horrible? For not being aw bless poor you, for going 27 miles over the limit?!

Pay attention Captain, OP was 17 miles over. You just seem to be delighting in being rude and bullying.
You’ll get a fine and points OP. No great drama.

RosyDaysAhead · 02/06/2025 19:05

Most likely it'll be 6 points and a hefty fine - plus some court fees and victim surcharges - even if no victim. With doing 87 in a 70, you do risk a ban. you can write a letter to the court explaining that you had a lapse in judgement and it is out of character for you to speed and ask them to consider that you have always had a clean license and loss of license would mean you couldn’t take your children to school, this may go in your favour if they are considering a ban.

Tristan5 · 02/06/2025 19:06

The OP is clearly decent and of good character, she doesn’t deserve some of the wildly over-the-top responses evident on here from the permanently offended, sanctimonious types that have infested this forum.

OP, I think you will be offered a speed awareness course, provided there are no aggravating factors, like speeding in busy conditions or poor weather etc

Tbe worst-case scenario is an SP30 conviction (band A), with 3 points and a £100 fine.

Contrary to some comments on here, that would have little or no impact on your insurance, as you will see by running a GoCompare quote online with the conviction included.

Good luck OP!👍

Apologies but you driving at that speed 100% deserves a bolluking. How dare you risk the lives of others even if was just for a minute or so.

If an A road is 2 lanes and has a central reservation then the limit is 70.

I think that you will be lucky to just get a driver awareness course at this speed. Points and fine at a guess
