Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

So if it was a 70mph limit and you were doing 87 then thats a Band A fine I believe. So you would get 3 points and a fine thats 25 - 75% of your weekly income. Minimum £100 Maximum £1000. If you look online you can find speeding fine calculators.
The letter wants to know who is driving then they send the whats going to happen letter.
But that much over the limit its bot going to be nice.

Points and a fine. No biggie. I wouldn’t say 87 is a completely ridiculous speed. I drive on A roads and motorway everyday for work and people are usually doing around this sort of speed.

Yes I agree. I can’t abide shit drivers, but doing 87 in a 70 is very common and doesn’t warrant the reaction I’ve seen so far on this thread. Especially as the reaction is coming from some who just haven’t got their facts straight. Also I get the impression that OP is genuinely remorseful and aware.

dhfoody47 · 02/06/2025 22:26

I got stopped on the M4 doing 92, genuinely rushing to get to see my Great Aunt who was in hospital dying - no excuse I know but ....
They pulled me over, classic 'nice policeman/nasty policeman' combo, anyhoo, they said I was very lucky blah blah (I was a gibbering idiot & I don't think they could deal with that) as, I quote -
Over 90 - Court
Over 100 - Immediate ban

I got fined £60 & 3 points on my licence.
You'll be fine but it does shake you up🪻

Yes I know it was unbelievably stupid.

the road was empty and we’d been caught for hours earlier in the journey and our accommodation said we couldn’t check in after 7. It was 6.20.

I know this is no excuse

On the speed awareness course you are asked to say what speed you were doing and why. Everyone confidently comes out with ' I was late for the dentist/ parents evening/ an interview blah blah. Then they ask you to visualise standing in front of the family of the person you have killed and whether you think your excuse would be 'good enough'. Imagine if you'd killed someone in a bid not to miss your check in time

They;re not excuses, its the context in which you were speeding is all. You're asked the question, so you simply explain it

No one is saying 'it was ok because I was late for the dentist'. Part of the course is about how you mitigate against the risk of driving too fast (the risk of you doing it, not the risk from it), so those reasons are important to contextualise what you were doing and where your mind was at the time.

Kerensa70 · 02/06/2025 22:31

Everybody is v self righteous here. She has no speeding history, picking up that extra 17mph is unfortunately very easy to do on an empty road, I think we’ve all done it as drivers. I think 3 points and a £100, I don’t think police forces vary that much.

eastegg · 02/06/2025 22:33

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 31/05/2025 20:57

That is a very high %
so it wasn't like doing 33 in a 30 mile limit

87 in a 70

Speed kills.

I wouldn’t say it’s ‘very’ high. It’s 24% over.

On the single occasion I got caught speeding, I was doing 39 in a 30. That’s 30% over, and I got the speed awareness course.

Donsyb · 02/06/2025 22:41

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 21:05

It’s a notice of prosecution not a fine so assume it’s being taken to court.

Yes it’s absolutely a wake up call and I never plan to speed again no matter the circumstances.

We live very rurally at home so I’m terrified I’ll lose my licence - won’t be able to take my kids to school

I think they all say notice of prosecution on the first letter?

I've done it three times* and have never been asked to visualise anything like that. I was asked "why" I was speeding, but this is to help you work through how not to do it again, how not to be in that situation.

I don't think I recall anyone "confidently" declaring their reasons, most people seemed embarrassed and knew there was (and is) no excuse.

  • Shock news, it doesn't work!
Negroany · 02/06/2025 23:24

RosyDaysAhead · 02/06/2025 19:05

Most likely it'll be 6 points and a hefty fine - plus some court fees and victim surcharges - even if no victim. With doing 87 in a 70, you do risk a ban. you can write a letter to the court explaining that you had a lapse in judgement and it is out of character for you to speed and ask them to consider that you have always had a clean license and loss of license would mean you couldn’t take your children to school, this may go in your favour if they are considering a ban.

This is such unmitigated nonsense that, quite frankly, you should be banned from the Internet.

CommonAsMucklowe · 03/06/2025 07:30

Shade17 · 02/06/2025 20:47

Not if she has an otherwise clean license. A single minor speeding offence is unlikely to cause too much of an increase.

I disagree, each driving offence has a code. Her insurers will ask for the endorsement code, they won't care about a previously clean licence.

CoughCoughLaugh · 03/06/2025 07:36

Tristan5 · 02/06/2025 21:01

Do you have evidence to the contrary?

No, I don't, but I didn't say "OP is clearly an awful person" either. Because I don't know. You stated that "The OP is clearly decent and of good character".

How is it "clear"?!

Of course they care about a previously clean license. If you already have points and gain some more then it makes a bigger impact than if your license was otherwise clean. A single 3 point SP30 won’t make too much difference.

budlea64 · 03/06/2025 07:49

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:48

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

I know this road well and it has police presence with mobile cameras an awful lot because it's mostly straight and has been a place where drivers notoriously go over the limit for decades. N Yorks doesn't have any fixed cameras. The A64 stretch between York and Scarborough does have a lot of accidents and fatalities though, hence the cameras targeting the area. What makes it particularly dangerous on the dual carriageway stretch is the openings where people in local villages, visitors to Castle Howard and farm workers in tractors have to cross it.
87 is considered a high speed and is just over the range for a speed awareness course so it's likely you will get points and a fixed penalty.

hadenoughofsnowflakes · 02/06/2025 19:16

Momentarily stupid is no excuse. You have obviously posted on here to get sympathy but as others have said you are selfish.
my son was killed aged 22 in a high speed crash - the effects of that are not momentarily - they destroy families lives forever, we will never recover, so maybe think about that before you worry about checking in somewhere on time - get some perspective, and no I’m not ‘being mean’.

I’m sorry for your loss but after some twenty odd pages OP has probably got the message and she admitted she was wrong in the very first post. She didn’t post for sympathy - she posted for advice on what the likely penalty would be. That’s been lost in the torrent of posters hammering home what an awful person she is. And for everyone still posting and addressing the OP directly. She hasn’t posted for three days, so yet another bang up job of chasing an OP off her own thread. I doubt she’d have got such a pile on even if she’d posted in AIBU.

Rosscameasdoody · 03/06/2025 08:54

CommonAsMucklowe · 03/06/2025 07:30

Of course they will. The increase for three points on a previously clean licence isn’t going to be anywhere near as brutal as if added to and increasing existing points.

Rosscameasdoody · 03/06/2025 09:02

grownuplefthome · 02/06/2025 17:55

You may very well loose your license, you might try to claim extenuating circumstances but you need a really good one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

A ban can only be imposed if OP is summoned to a court appearance, which is generally reserved for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30mph or driving at speeds exceeding 100mph - unless there were other charges involved. That doesn’t apply to OP from what she’s posted so more likely to be a fixed penalty - a fine and points.

RainbowAndArrow · 03/06/2025 10:04

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 02/06/2025 21:12

Well in my opinion a prison sentence would be appropriate.
You weren't just stupid, you were reckless and all for the sake of your holiday.
Maybe sitting in a room with loved ones who have lost their beloved partner's, children, parents etc to people who use their vehicles as lethal weapons and hear how their lives have been ruined might make you think.

You think this is prison worthy? Are you serious?

CoughCoughLaugh · 03/06/2025 10:07

Seriously? No answer as to how you know the OP is CLEARLY decent and of good character, just that my grammar is awful? What an excellent come back and says it all really. No answer to a reasonable question, just a personal insult about something utterly irrelevant.

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:50

You hope I lose my licence? Is that really necessary of you?

Jesus you sound entitled. It doesn't matter what you udualky do, in that day you were acting like a twat, sting far too fast & coukd have killed someone, that poster is entitled to not want to driving, risking others lives because you were running Kate for a hotel check in (not life saving surgery or to say a final good bye to a loved one, a hotel check in 🙄🙄)

it wasn't 'stupid' Stupid is forgetting to put the milk back in the fridge. It was dangerous & selfish.

stop taking it out on other posters,

SamDeanCas · 03/06/2025 10:20

A NIP (notice of intended prosecution) doesn’t mean court. They are just confirming who was driving the car at the time. Once you’ve provided this information you will either get a court summons (which is unlikely) or an offer for a speed awareness course (probably not as you were exceeding the limit by 20%) or a fine and points. My guess would be points and a fine.

Cases such as dangerous driving or careless driving would result in a court appearance, but don’t always mean a ban. Careless driving could see you with a higher fine and 6 points, but if you’ve got a clean licence you wouldn’t lose it.

You're getting a hard time on here, but try not to worry, you’ve obviously had a shock which is likely to result in you being more careful which can only be a good thing.

FloppySarnie · 03/06/2025 10:29

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 21:48

Thanks for clarifying.

I’ve had my licence 25 years and never had points before.

Obviously I’ll plead guilty. Will I need to attend the court?

That’s really not true. I’ve already said that I was caught doing 87 in a 70 last year and I got 3 points and a fine of £100 if I recall. No court.

She's admitted she was in the wrong, she was asking what the likely punishment would be.

Honestly what is wrong with some of you?
