Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

You think this is prison worthy? Are you serious?

Yep, if you can go to prison for non payment of fine then why not for recklessly endangering the lives of innocent pedestrians, other road users and your passengers ?
This was not an emergency dash to a hospital or the like it was for her HOLIDAY .

On the speed awareness course you are asked to say what speed you were doing and why. Everyone confidently comes out with ' I was late for the dentist/ parents evening/ an interview blah blah. Then they ask you to visualise standing in front of the family of the person you have killed and whether you think your excuse would be 'good enough'. Imagine if you'd killed someone in a bid not to miss your check in time

Because that's a persistent offence? This isn't?

There is no mitigating factor for speeding..the reason isn't important it doesn't affect the punishment. There is no justification for it.

What a world you must live in.

The letter says it was a 70 limit.

It was the A64 in Yorkshire. We live in Surrey.

Do you need to be so horrible? I already feel absolutely terrible and I never usually speed

They’re not being horrible, they’re being truthful. You could have caused an horrific accident for the sake of what, getting there a few minutes earlier? The A64 is recognised as having the worst serious accident and fatality record in the North of England. I would wager that most (not all) people have sped at times (including me), but you were way over the limit on what I assume, was an unfamiliar road to you. I hope the consequences fit the offence.

As you admit to the same offence with potentially just as serious consequences, you're hardly in a position to criticise.

Ilovemyshed · 03/06/2025 11:11

@Speeding87stupid people on here will tear you apart for daring to go over any speed limit but I bet every single one of them who drives has done it at some point.

Firstly, you are sorry, and very conscious you will try not to do it again.
If you go on a speed awareness course you will learn that there is NO mitigation for speeding, even for an emergency.

At the speed you were doing, you are over the parameters for a speed awareness course so the likelihood is that you will be invited to take 3 points onto your licence and pay £100 fine.
They will ask if you want to argue it and go to court but if you were doing the speed, then pay up.

The points will be on your licence for 4 years (visible for 3) and will need to be declared to your insurance.

It happens, be sorry but don’t beat yourself up. Take the lesson of points and a fine as a consequence.

Ilovemyshed · 03/06/2025 11:37

Also, see attached link which has the Apco guidelines
you are within the fixed penalty band and are very unlikely to have to go to court.

So many posters defending that pp for being ‘truthful’, ‘correct’, ‘just speaking the truth’. Ironically that is what they were demonstrably not doing, as in that very post in which they attacked OP, they claimed she was doing nearly 30 mph over the limit. Whether or not they were being horrible, they were most definitely talking bollocks.

It doesn't come under the remit of dangerous driving.

Why are you telling her to grow up?

I know it does not come under the remit of dangerous driving. But l think it should do .

Is the speed limit on motorways still.70
mph

I am telling her to grow up as l.presune she is a grown women who shoild know the law.

Not some innocent child

Got it duhhh

RainbowAndArrow · 03/06/2025 17:48

'got it duh'. Are you... Are you an actual grown adult who has just typed that to someone?

Seriously? No answer as to how you know the OP is CLEARLY decent and of good character, just that my grammar is awful? What an excellent come back and says it all really. No answer to a reasonable question, just a personal insult about something utterly irrelevant.

Thank you!

Doingnothingtoday · 03/06/2025 18:12

OP, I fear the endless bickering in these replies isn't helping you at all. An earlier poster enclosed a link to sentencing guidelines, this is what you need to look at. Looking at these you won't lose your license, although will probably have exceeded the limit for the speed awareness course.

The sentencing guidelines are the 'bible' for Magistrates so they would have to abide by them.

My guess would be that once you have confirmed you are the driver, you'll be given the points and a fine.

This won’t be going anywhere near a magistrate.

No magistrate will be involved in this decision. It's a fixed penalty.

How is she entitled exactly?

She's admitted she was in the wrong, she was asking what the likely punishment would be.

Honestly what is wrong with some of you?

Sorry about all the mistakes in that post,

it's rude to ask 'what's wrong with you' simply because people have a different opinion to you.

She's 'admitted' she's wrong, but isn't really accepting she was wrong, she's snapping at people who would rather she wasn't driving on our roads, she's complaining people are being horrible, when they're not.

her general attitude is entitled, all she's worried about is losing her license, not the people she could have killed, she doesn't care how unsafe it was, just if she'll be inconvenienced because she lives rurally.

Kerensa70 · 03/06/2025 18:32

I’m pretty sure they all say notice of prosecution, it’s a horrible letter to receive for sure. You were lucky, I was lucky too when I got one. It’s very sobering but I’m sure it will be ok.

No, it’s reasonable to ask what’s wrong with you if what you post shows that you have read something into a posters words that aren’t there and put a spin on it to suit your own narrative. As you have. OP has said several times she’s never done this before and won’t again. She has completely accepted she’s wrong and is prepared to take whatever punishment is coming her way. All she asked for was advice on what to expect, so she can plan for getting about in a rural environment, should she lose her licence.

People ARE being horrible. Many posters leaping joyfully on the OP and piling on.This is one of the most judgmental and sanctimonious threads l’ve seen in a long time with the same shit being posted over and over again. And those posters ‘not wanting people like OP driving on our roads’ need to get on the inside lane of any motorway at 70mph and watch the majority of the traffic flashing past them at speeds well in excess of the speed limit. Not condoning it, just pointing out that it’s pretty much the norm and that OP is by no means alone.

And somewhere upthread a while ago now, l posted that OP had not returned to the thread for three days - and is clearly not coming back. Yet the vitriol directed at her continues unabated. That says more about those posting than it does about OP.

Doingnothingtoday · 03/06/2025 18:48

@Shade17 @Negroany I agree, I only referred to Magistrates to emphasise the importance of the sentencing guidelines (as opposed to to some of the more random pronouncements on this thread!)

It’s posts like this that ensured OP was never coming back to the thread. She last posted three days ago. You’re shouting the answer to a question she never asked into the void.

soupyspoon · 03/06/2025 18:53

CoughCoughLaugh · 03/06/2025 07:36

No, I don't, but I didn't say "OP is clearly an awful person" either. Because I don't know. You stated that "The OP is clearly decent and of good character".

How is it "clear"?!

Well she has some decency because she is going to be honest and say she was driving and not try to hoodwink anyone and blame someone else, she has some decency because she knows she was wrong and is regretful and remorseful, citing that she was stupid to do so, she knows its not justified.

So on that basis alone, even if she is unpleasant in other ways, she has shown good character and decency in terms of how she is dealing with this.

Thats all one can go on, given she has been hounded off her own thread by vitriol. She isnt arguing the toss and calling people arseholes even though many on here clearly are.
