Does she actually live "in" Malibu? Or in the "Malibu area"? There could be a lot of difference in property prices between the two.
It's a bit like saying that I live in Bath. I don't, as I'm about 20 minutes away but more people have heard of Bath than Keynsham (we come under the same council).

There are some places in Malibu that are ramshackle bungalows. Maybe one of them. I lived in LA in the 90s and spent a lot of time in Malibu.

She lives in a seafront mansion.

treesandsun · 16/05/2025 11:02

She has worked since young and will have got repeat fees too and Eastenders is shown in other countries. She has fingers in a lot pies - hair care/ skin care/ make up/ wellness brand / Dj ing and Real Estate. If she sold her property here she will have made money it is not like she had a bedsit in a cheap location. She will have got a decent chunk of money each time she was brought back to Eastenders.

Actors with speaking lines make royalties from reruns etc

She's a dj out there too. Although I don't think that's where she made her millions.

I'm never quite sure about her, she can be really arsey in interviews.

I wonder if she's got her silver padded coat in the wardrobe should the evenings turn chilly.

This 💯

Badbadbunny · 16/05/2025 11:05

@JustMyView13

She probably didn’t succumb to lifestyle inflation, which is most people’s biggest downfall.

Is almost certainly the answer.

She WILL have been well paid for her short time in Eastenders. Maybe not millions, but certainly the kind of earnings that "normal" people could only dream of. Plus appearance fees on talk shows, and whatever other TV shows she was on over the years. Whatever "sleb" shows she's been on (Strictly?). Undoubtedly also earnings from fitness videos, putting her name to things, starting businesses, etc.

IF, she hasn't wasted it on lavish lifestyles, and lived a comfortable lifestyle, it's perfectly possible that sensible investments and not wasting money on drugs or other addictions, not spunking money on ridiculous cars, handbags, etc too often, even "minor" slebs can end up very well off over a few decades.

Pyew · 16/05/2025 11:05

Yes, her beauty range. With its 0 reviews and 173-strong Facebook following. I'm sure that'll be it.

The OP doesn't say anything of the sort. Just that it doesn't add up, which it doesn't.

According to Patsy herself, she sniffed/drank a lot of what she earned. She married a cab driver. Then all of a sudden they move to Malibu, he never works again, she spends her time on vanity projects with minimal income streams and the odd guest appearance on a BBC soap. At the time they moved there was talk of a lottery win, which makes more sense than her somehow amassing £9.3 million from "wellness".

Has she specifically said she sniffed and drank a lot of her earnings? I only ask because alcoholism isn't always particularly expensive, though I don't know anything much about coke. There is a functioning alcoholic in my family who drinks primarily supermarket own brand at home. You can get a fair bit of that for a few quid a day, and it was even cheaper before the minimum unit pricing and the permitted price rules.

Yup, one of my clients was an actor, and had a regular, but incidental character in an 80s/90s long running series. Never any story lines about him, but he'd pop up in most episodes, spanning over a decade, saying just a line or two, or just in the background. (I wish I could say who he is, but it's confidential to my profession!). He still gets decent sized royalty payments, not just from the UK re-runs, but also from DVD sales, but also from downloads, overseas TV showings, etc. Obviously only a fraction of the amounts the the stars will be receiving, but for him, it's a good add-on to his pensions, even though the figures get lower by each passing year as the series becomes less popular and the royalty periods are expiring.

But aside from that, he got other "bit part" acting jobs in lots of other TV programmes, and also some appearance fees on chat shows etc., though he's never even been asked to do any "sleb" series such as Jungle etc as he's not "relevant" to today's audiences as he's no longer working at all, and he's not a "household" name from the days when he was working either!

But being a "bit part" for so long for a decade or so certainly gave him a very comfortable living!

I wondered this too as so many others from Eastenders have really struggled after leaving the show.

CountryQueen · 16/05/2025 11:25

Oh. Scrap that. I’ve just looked up the actor who played Mike and he died suddenly aged 50 in Hawaii! What a shame for him

HaHa! VERY similar, but no, not him. But you're definitely along the right lines. But more long running drama rather than long running comedy.

Has she specifically said she sniffed and drank a lot of her earnings?

She's pretty open that she spent twenty years on various substances.

Yes I knew about the addictions. But has she specifically talked about this in relation to her income, or is the 'a lot' you surmising?

And you don't tend to make many financially savvy decisions when you're locked in a battle with drink and drugs.

And you don't tend to make many financially savvy decisions when you're locked in a battle with drink and drugs.

Well again, it depends.

Patsy is of a generation and location where if you bought at the right time then managed to set up and adhere to a monthly payment for the mortgage, it couldn't not be a good investment. We know she was functional enough to be in Eastenders during that time, so it's not a great stretch to think she might have retained enough sense to keep paying the mortgage instead of cancelling it and snorting the money instead. It wouldn't even have required her to be particularly savvy. Anyone in that position would accrue just the same value in their property if someone else had told them to do it and picked the best home as they would if they'd worked it all out with no support.

I mentioned a few posts back there's a functioning alcoholic in my family. Not an ex one like Patsy, but someone who still drinks. Their home must have massively increased in value too, just because of when they bought it. I don't even know if it was their idea to buy, but they did. There are some generational and regional cohorts where you didn't have to be very smart to make a great property investment.

Well twenty years of drugs and booze generally involves significant expenditure but maybe she got a hold of the fabled Mumsnet Marchies where a line lasts a month for a family of seven and then you make stock with the leftovers.

LoafofSellotape · 16/05/2025 12:12

A DJ is an odd career choice if you're living a sober life, you're putting yourself right in the midst of temptation.

But was it a "battle" or did she just dabble in the lifestyle? Was it a genuine serious addiction, or was it just a bit of heavy partying? Basically, did it take over and rule her life, or was it just a part of her life at that time? Makes a massive difference.
