Is anyone else boycotting Eurovision?

Usually love watching Eurovision but will not watch it this year due to Israel being allowed to compete. I don’t understand how Israel are allowed to compete but not Russia (not that I’d agree with them competing either) so sadly, we won’t be watching it. Is anyone else boycotting it?

Man, really wish I could downvote all the pro- Israel messages 😂
Israel funds the majority of Eurovision which is why it will never be dropped from the contest
Also most Israelis hail from Europe which is why they enter, they feel an affinity with the region in their hearts rather than the Middle East
Same as Australia I guess
Good on Belgium tho for broadcasting a Pro- Palestine message before the show

You need to do some research. Most Israelis do not have European heritage. Over 50% are Sephardi which means they come from Morocco Libya Syria India Algeria Ethiopia, Tunisia, Afghanistan,?egypt Yemen Iran and Iraq. All countries Jews were forced out from around the 1950’s and 60’s

Isn't Cyprus a member of the European union?

Yes. However, geographically it is in Asia.

Is anyone else boycotting Eurovision?
InWalksBarberalla · 15/05/2025 21:10

I've always wondered about Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia- clearly geographically part of Asia. Are these considered part of Europe politically though?

It's unbelievable.. Also, there are still hostages.

Exactly. But let's all pretend that Hamas is using Palestinians as shields. Do we actually believe they are hungry or just those poor innocents

MayaPinion · 15/05/2025 22:50

I’m not sure Mary from Ipswich boycotting Eurovision is going to resolve this crisis.

mindingmyown37 · 15/05/2025 22:53

If I was to boycott it wouldn’t be for that, why should people get punished because of the actions of thier government. I did say to my sister earlier i feel like it’s less about the singing these days and more about whose more camp 😂 I will of course watch it, complain about the shit singers including this Tommy cash guy who I had the displeasure of watching the other day. Then proceeded to to complain when we don’t recieve any points, and still watch it again for the foreseeable future 🤣

I'm just making the point that I made. The whole situation is a hideous mess.

AmIthatSpringy · 16/05/2025 00:57

I don’t watch it anyway, but the rules seem consistent enough to me.

The Russian government launched the initial attack on Ukraine which kicked off the ongoing conflict, so Russia was banned whilst Ukraine are still allowed to compete.

Likewise, the Palestinian government launched the initial attack on Israel (7th Oct) which kicked off the ongoing current conflict, so Israel are still allowed to compete.

Mad reasoning. Palestinians have been undergoing decades of oppression since the Nakba prior to the attack on the 7th of October. Gaza was known as the largest open air prison for years. You need to brush up on your history.

Yes, I'll be boycotting which is a shame because I like the cheesiness. But I can't justify watching it this year.

This is the most awful hate speech I have read on Mumsnet so far. It deserves reporting to the police. Anyone with these views is a danger to society.

DrPrunesqualer · 16/05/2025 03:52

Israel should not be allowed to compete as Russia hasn’t been and they have both used armed forces to attack and invade others.
Netanyahu is wanted for War Crimes fgs what the hell are Eurovision doing !! !

Not to mention The voting will be even more political than it already is so what’s the point

If they funded most of the contest they would be in the Big 5 who don't have to compete in the semi finals.

devourfeculence · 15/05/2025 09:58

Most Israelis were born in Israel, which last time I checked was in the middle east.

It's part of a narrative that says Jews aren't indigenous to the Middle East and should be moved to Europe, despite historical records saying they are. I hate what Israel is doing and actually don't think they should be in Eurovision, partly because both the songs they have put forward have been political, but the 'Jews are funding everything' when they are not ' is an old anti Semitic trope joined to this new one.

xanthomelana · 16/05/2025 05:02

The whole thing is a joke. It’s going to be between Israel and Ukraine who gets the sympathy vote and is so full of political bull shit I don’t know why anyone watches it. Countries voting for each other because they are next door neighbours and others voting for countries to show support for ongoing conflicts, it’s basically a show of hands who’s on who’s side.

To be fair, no one ever came second better than Sam Ryder.

Fuego is a tune. Also don't forget that gorgeous French song from a few years ago

CrocsNotDocs · 16/05/2025 05:35

Delighted Yuval Raphael got through the semi-finals. A beautiful brave survivor with a great voice.

Just one point, although I am also horrified at the stories and images, it's worthwhile remembering that Gaza was under Egyptian military rule until 1967. They've not had a happy history either way.

I will be watching it and voting for Israel. Their singer was at the Nova festival and almost killed on October 7th. The hatred she is facing now and the risks to her life absolutely disgust me.

you'll vote for an Israeli performer even though someone else could be more deserving of their vote talent wise?

Not that I d seen it since the days of Sandi Shaw but I’m genuinely curious as to the above.

Edited

I thought partisan voting was the norm on Eurovision. Talent has nothing to do with it.

Look at this goady fucker

Well in general Ireland and the Irish are pretty hostile to Israel and to Jews are they not? Who can blame him?

I'm not sure whether it's been mentioned on this thread but I heard on the radio this morning that the girl singing the Israeli entry is actually a survivor of the musical festival massacre by Hamas on 7th October, on the day Hamas decided to start a war. She fled the gunmen and hid in a literal pile of people in a tunnel, while the gunmen fired randomly into it, knowing they were there. I do hope people try to bear that in mind before they think she's a legitimate target for booing, jeering and intimidation. She's probably already got PTSD. Who wouldn't have, after that?

Contrast that to the rapturous welcome and support given by Ukraine at Eurovision at their first appearance following being invaded by Russia.
