One thing though.

I think, and I am giving Starmer the benefit of the doubt here, is the 'island of strangers' came out all wrong. I don't think he meant it the way it came across, as strangers coming to the island and taking over. It was more about all of us being strangers to each other.

Hmm, you could be right. It sounded very deliberate to me. I think Starmer knew exactly what he was insinuating, and he hasn't apologised or given an alternative explanation as yet.
His 'island of strangers' remark is being compared elsewhere to Enoch Powell's speech, where he said Britons 'found themselves made strangers in their own country'. Not a good look for a labour PM.
