Yep. At least Boris tried to hide it when he was telling porkies. Starmer is a full frontal gaslighter. How can anyone support that? I can't think of a worse PM in my lifetime.

I'm struggling to think of a worst PM in British political history.🤔😳

Yes, you're right.

Perhaps Starmer has decided that a Labour/Reform coalition is the best way to stay in power 🤔.

Imagine if a Tory MP had said ‘island of strangers’ - there would’ve been absolute uproar. ‘Resign now you racist!’; ‘Fascist!’; ‘Nazi Germany is alive and kicking in 21st century UK’ etc.etc.

Jesus, that Guardian piece really sums things up, doesn't it? Absolute despair by the BDO describing an untenable business landscape decimated by the increase in minimum wage and increased ni contributions and braced for more pain with the impending employment right's bill, while consumer confidence takes a nose dove. Treasury response....so sad, too bad.

It's like the LibDems under Clegg all over again - selling their soul in pursuit of a bit of power. Look how badly that ended for them!

It's no surprise to anyone who followed Rachel over her past few years as Shadow Chancellor. She hadn't a clue then and she hasn't a clue now.

I can’t believe it. What an idiot.

And yes can you imagine. Not much on here from
Labour supporters, still some gunning for them.

Yeah, the consequences of this economic recklessness was inevitable. I'm still a little agog at the, 'Don't give a shite' vibe from the treasury.

EasternStandard · 12/05/2025 13:46

I just read that article. That response bloody hell. It’s like they’ve given up trying.

Upstartled · 12/05/2025 13:58

I wonder when it became politically expedient to annex the language of anti-immigration? It has the risk of shaking off a few - and now crucial - remaining Labour supporters and legitimising/ sanitising the language of reform - but clearly things are so disastrous that the hope of enticing lost supporters is worth it.

It's another 'we should not say such things' to 'yeah, we were saying that all along' about-face that is fast becoming the defining feature of Starmer's leadership.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/05/2025 14:02

It’s not going to do anything good for him, this announcement. If anything it will lose voters for him.

It will alienate the far left and doesn’t go fat enough for the rest of the voters.

Totally agree. It pleases no-one, left or right.

That’s looking increasingly like just an mn phenomenon for the few here.

Who uses language as a weapon in that way in fear of losing power.

Totally craven.

I wonder when they will realise they are being taken for granted.

I don’t see many cats being called Keir in the near future.

They will - their ability to absorb the twisting principle of the government is something to behold. But I think lots may bristle at the thought. We'll have to see. Labour is still the most popular party in London but it has lost a lot of ground since the election to LibDems and the Greens - I think we'll see more of that direction of travel among left leaning areas.

TheNuthatch · 12/05/2025 14:26

It's very quiet on MN from the labour fans. I wonder what excuses they'll come up with?

Presumably Starmer will be worshipped for banning care workers. Farage will be vilified for banning...flags.

OP posts:
Upstartled · 12/05/2025 14:30

Give them a minute, Nuthatch. It's very hard to build a cheerleading routine in the paper thin boundary between Keir's new line on immigration and the total abjection of any right leaning talking points.

I think they're having a bit of trouble in London too 👀. Labour are still leading but are 13 percentage points down from the July.

Nail on the head. He just floundering about trying to appease, but a large proportion of Reform voters are ex-Tory voters, so won't be voting Labour anyway. They've either vote Reform or Tory at the next GE. After all, they didn't vote Labour last year who didn't really poll any better than five years ago under Corbyn. They only "won" a landslide because of the collapse of the Tory vote. The only people to stop Reform winning a lot of seats next time is for the Tories to get their act together and draw back all the disenfranchised voters - Kemi isn't the person to be able to do that.

I hadn't realised that reform was at 20% there.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/05/2025 14:39

That should have been far enough, not fat.

Sorry!

I know, right. Labour are still in the lead, but Starmer is splitting the left vote.

One thing though.

I think, and I am giving Starmer the benefit of the doubt here, is the 'island of strangers' came out all wrong. I don't think he meant it the way it came across, as strangers coming to the island and taking over. It was more about all of us being strangers to each other.
