Hopefully no one will buy it.

I guess I'll have to declare some naivety on this one. Surely it will depend on which foods they intend to import in greater quantities and if those foods are competing with our own farmers or with produce imported from other countries?

Maybe the answer is obvious and it will inevitably hit our own famers. I don't know - happy to be educated if that's a clueless response.

TheNuthatch · 08/05/2025 14:51

The devil will be in the detail. Perhaps British farmers will also gain greater access to US markets. Trump press conference at 3pm, then I think there's a UK announcement later today. I just hope farmers don't get battered again.

Yes, it seems like the words energy security are scripted on repeated in response to scepticism about net zero. But they are super cool about hammering farmers and jeopardising food security. I guess we'll have to see.

Just caught some of the stuff in Times radio. At times so cringy have to turn it off. Bloody hell the bombast.

'If that shifts she changes policy. They said it was madness to do it that way but it’s why you get these changes like welfare cuts thrown up and amended if the modelling shows it’s still off.'

This was so evident in the way they announced the welfare cuts wasn't it? They shoved Liz Kendal out to shout announce cuts to save the Chancellor taking the heat. Then by the time of the mini budget spring statement, they had realised that their sums were wrong, so went back for more.
I am dreading the Autumn budget.

Is More or Less a podcast? I haven't heard of that one before. I'm looking to add some more pods to my list. I've had to click unfollow on Electoral Dysfunction as I can't stand listening to Harriet Harman's labour spin anymore.

@TheNuthatchIts R4 weekly thing, I rarely listen these days but it should be on BBC Sounds catch up.

It’s really good at unpicking headlines and data. If that £60bn hits modelling hits the gov I can’t see how they won’t be toast. I guess we’ll see.

I thought certain American food products like chicken and beef were banned because of their low standards, does that mean we are now accepting them under this trade deal?

There will be no weakening of UK food standards on imports, according to the press release.

Looks like we're getting American beef, but its the best beef in the world 🙄.
I won't be buying it.

Trump puts on huge tariffs countries go all loopy at progress when they remove some but not all.

He’s definitely getting people going, all pretty funny really.

I don’t suppose anyone follows the noodle guy on IG or other who is brilliant at doing Trump and noodles. He convinces people to give up their noodles and offers a bit of sauce. You probably have to watch 😬

The noodle guy analogy seems very apt.

Have they confirmed that?

They have. 😡

Have they confirmed that?

Pretty sure that's nailed on. When asked directly, Starmer said that any American beef imported will meet British food standards.

But American beef, with their use of growth hormones, would be a dropping of standards? Or will their beef have to meet our standards?

It will meet our standards....so they say!

When Trump was asked about it, he said Bobby Kennedy was raising USA food standards to be the same as ours anyway 😬

I can't imagine that that's the kind of thing that you can turn around quickly.

Upstartled · 08/05/2025 18:43

Honestly, I just did the extra-curricula taxi slot and I missed everything. White smoke too and a Pope from Chicago!

Snap, mum's taxi here too 😂. Just caught bits on the radio. I didn't even know there was a new pope!

I just did a double take. An American pope?? Seriously?

OP posts:
Upstartled · 08/05/2025 18:50

Yup! And quite young for a pope too, so could have decades in him.

EasternStandard · 08/05/2025 19:00

Lovely to see the new Pope. Nice to get away from politicians for a bit.

Voyager54 · 08/05/2025 19:09

There are some issues here to say the least

1 Why did Starmer need voice lessons? Because what he states is false!

2 Why did he and other people now in the cabinet and partners accept new payments for clothes? When their wardrobes both male and female will be overflowing with unused clothes. This is not being carbon aware. Why?

3 Not paying winter fuel allowance! When pensioners struggling.

4 Not answering questions at PMQ's. Why it is simple!

A bunch of clowns
